Yesterday, for one Sunday in a long while now I did NOT write a Ruminations piece. My health has not been in the pinkest colour lately, so yesterday I spent time with a Christian pastor who subscribes totally to the concept of Salvation through Christ's sacrifice on the Cross, a Buddhist believer who subscribes totally to the "karma" concept, (akin to the What goes around comes around credo...?)and I had tehtarik at tea time with a believer of all religions partially, and like Desi, the last wants to become a Cowboy singin' C&W songs in Nashville, Tennysee -- either solo, duet or a quartet when we lined up two true-blooded cowgals.

In te evening I threw caution to the wind, and going against doctor's (out of the House unless you consider that vvhacko Dr on American TV as in-house...) instruction, gobbled down the best chuKIOKsin I had laid off for more than a month.

I felt so lighthearted I woke up at 6.00AM, quite unusual as it's often after the sun has risen two hours, and after a hot Milo, began tapping on this keyboard to do someketchUP posting. I habitually do this by checking out sarawho.com, a collator or cybe-sentralstationof bloggers' writes/rites/writHes.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — The arrest of 30 Bersih activists by police in Penang under Section 122 of the Penal Code is a clear form of police intimidation to frighten supporters of the July 9 rally, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan said today.

The Bersih 2.0 chairman accused the police of "deliberately overreacting" by arresting the activists under an "archaic provision."

"I am utterly shocked by the manner in which these people have been arrested and the section under which they are apparently to be charged.

"This is a clear intimidation of the people involved. I think the police have deliberately overreacted by trying to intimidate people," Ambiga told The Malaysian Insider.

The police said they are probing an alleged attempt by some Bersih activists to revive communism and are investigating 30 Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) members, including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jayakumar for "waging war against the Yang DiPertuan Agong."

Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has defended the arrests, saying today there were reasons to justify the police action.

Hishamuddin, who is the home minister, said that he had yet to be briefed in detail on the arrests, but stated that preliminary reports showed that the activists had "other agendas" in mind.

"This does not auger well for Malaysia who sits on the Human Rights Council … clearly designed to intimidate.

"There will be more clampdowns, and more arrests ... why only attack Bersih? What have we done? And such an archaic law should not be used today," the former Bar Council chairman added.

Deputy Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar said today that remand orders would be exercised in order to detain the 30 activists under Section 122 of the Penal Code.

Police have said they will not issue any permits for rallies on July 9 and have asked the organisers to come in for questioning tomorrow.

Death threats have also been made against Ambiga and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, who is organising a rally to support the Election Commission, which is the subject of Bersih's demands for free and fair elections.

I remember this episode because I was then serving as an online News Editor. No, the Police did not act against a bunch of UMNO Youth then for marching towards Suqiu headoffice threatening to burn down their office in downtown KL. The considerate police were around to help direct traffic so that beesy KL folks, especially sidwalk drinks hawkers -- and sellers cigarette lighters, candles too? -- could go on making the xxtra bucks, curtsey of UMNO Youth!

A sad weekend...

I just came back from Hospital Tuanku Jaafar in Seremban after spending two days there, trying to console and comfort my sister Halimaton, whose two boys were injured - one of whom is in a critical condition - after the car they were travelling flipped a few times after being rammed from behind.

The incident took place around 11pm Friday near the Senawang R&R. They just left our mom's house to go back to their home in Rinching, Semenyih.

I was supposed to meet them but I left for KL at 6.30, missing them by about an hour when they arrived in our kampung. I had to attend an important meeting at 8.30, that was the reason why I couldnt wait.

Five of them were in the car, including her hubby who was driving, their two sons aged 12 and 19 and a 5-year old daughter. I received a call from my eldest sister at 11.20pm and immediately rushed to Seremban.

Her hubby, Razali suffered serious neck injury while Halimaton herself injured her left eye. Miraculously, their daughter Yasmin was not injured. However, their sons Zul, 19 broke his arm, a few fingers and a toe while Faiz, 6, suffered cuts and bruises all over his body, serious head injury and broke his long bone, his arm, shoulder bone and two ribs after being 'thrown' out of the vehicle.

The driver of the other car fled the scene after being chased by other drivers and people who stopped to help the victims.

I was told that the weather was clear and not many cars were on the KL-bound North-South Expressway at that particular time. Witnesses said the other car was driven at high speed and was playing 'chicken' with a few other cars.

I am sure such an accident could be avoided if we are more alert and be more considerate. I just couldnt hold back my emotion when a doctor told us at 4am Saturday, "please pray for his (Faiz) life..."

However, I am taking this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to passers by, the police, the ambulance driver and the doctors, nurses and other hospital personnel who had and are helping them.

I really hope they recover soon, especially Faiz.

As expected, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has threatened to use the Internal Security Act on participants of the three concurrent rallies due on July 9, and while he did not mention which rally, it was obvious that he was directing his comments to the largest one – the Bersih 2.0 Walk for Democracy.

The Bersih rally is organised by 62 of the country's most established NGOs, who plan a peaceful march to deliver an 8-point memorandum to the King calling for free and fair elections.

The rally is supported by the Pakatan Rakyat led by Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim. However, the Najib administration is against the rally, labelling it as an opposition ploy, but has failed to provide any good reasons why citizens could not assemble peacefully when it was guaranteed under the federal constitution.

"If there is chaos, I am responsible to make sure that proper action following the law will be taken to control the situation. The ISA does not need to be used but can be used but to use the ISA, there must be reasons that really threaten the country's security and safety," Hisham told reporters on Sunday.

The ISA is dreaded because it allows the government to jail dissidents and political foes for indefinite periods of time without trial.

No guts? Tell it to Onn Jaffar

Hisham's words came hot on the heels of his cousin, Prime Minister Najib Razak, who warned he would hold the Bersih organisers responsible if there was unrest.

"Do not create chaos just because you want power. If there is chaos, then you organisers will be held responsible," Najib had said at the opening of People's Progressive Party's 58th Annnual General Assembly earlier on Sunday.

The PM also challenged the Pakatan to fight his BN in a general election instead of holding street demonstrations which would only cause problems.

"If you have guts, then fight us during the election and not this way by holding demonstrations. Only those with no guts will hold demonstrations," said Najib.

But the actions of the two cousins failed to create much impact. In Najib's own home state of Pahang on Sunday, 1,000 Kuanatan folk took part in a peaceful protest against his plan to build a rare earth plant in Gebeng.

"Hisham and UMNO are no different from the Syria or Libya tyrannical regimes. The use of the ISA to stop a peaceful assembly is unlawful and in breach of our federal constitution. This cowardly threat will not deter the people from exercising their right to peaceful assembly. I have no doubt the July 9 rally will proceed as far as Bersih is concerned," human rights lawyer N Surendran told Malaysia Chronicle.

Resurrection of Communism, by UMNO?

UMNO's clarion call used to be 'agama, bangsa dan Negara'. It has used this to arouse patriotic rallying to its banner.

Then at some stage, it decided to add 'raja' and kicked 'Negara' out.

'Raja' to Malays is a far more emotional word than 'Negara', inspiring fealty and readiness to defend their liege lord a la Hang Tuah against the Hang Jebats, which today are mainly party members of PAS, and their Chinese-Indian allies in DAP.

It's also easier to accuse the nons, especially Chinese, of being biadap to the rulers.

Never mind that on 10 December 1992, Dr Affifuddin Omar, an UMNO man from Padang Terap, no doubt given the imprimatur by his party leaders, asked in Parliament:

"How can we continue to uphold rulers who are known to be robbers, adulterers, drunkards and kaki pukul (thugs)?" [...]

"They (the rulers) must be made to realize that they do not own this country. They are not Superman but placed on their thrones by the people. "The real power did not lie with them, but with us - the representatives of the people."

Which 'non' could have said that and got away? None! Only UMNO and UMNO alone could have gotten away with its abuse of the raja whom they claim to defend today.

Francis Bacon once said: "The zeal which begins with hypocrisy must conclude in treachery; at first it deceives, at last it betrays", but obviously Boleh-UMNO has innovatively done it the other way around.

Likewise with 'agama dan bangsa' against the nons, but [sigh] blast PAS, if only those anti-Malay-unity people [bloody Jebats] weren't around to ruin the stirring ring of 'agama, bangsa dan ~~Negara~~ raja' [f* Negara anyway]

But, in spite of spoilsports PAS, the clarion call has been updated to 'agama, bangsa dan raja'.

Agama – bloody DAP and their agenda to install a Christian PM and make Malaysia a Christian nation. Islam is under threat from those DAP crusaders.

Bangsa – bloody greedy arrogant Chinese who will take over the country.

Raja – bloody DAP, so biadap to the Agong in having elections of mosque committee members without getting HM's permission

But but but … all above three are not true; besides, the DAP is not even involved in the last.

Doesn't matter and we (UMNO, Utusan etc) don't give a fig – it's the perception of the Heartland that matters, and we UMNO intends to colour this perception kau kau.

But what about the UMNO denigration of the rulers in calling them robbers, adulterers, drunkards and kaki pukul (thugs)? Ta apa lah, besides Melayu muda lupa.

What! You ask: How can they lie when they're sprouting 'agama' at the same time?

Aiyoh, lying is just one of the lesser crimes they have committed, which has been why kaytee believes almost every leader in UMNO is virtually an atheist wakakaka.

But the clarion is still considered not good enough.

So what now?

The police said today they are probing an alleged attempt by some Bersih activists to revive communism and are investigating 30 Parti Sosialis Malaysia PSM members including Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jayakumar for 'waging war against the Yang DiPertuan Agong'.

Deputy Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Jaafar was quoted by Astro Awani as saying today that remand orders would be applied for to detain the 30 activists under Section 122 of the Penal Code. The law was used to prosecute militant terrorist group Al Ma'unah who were involved in an audacious arms heist at an army camp in 2000 and a tense stand-off in the jungles of Perak in 2000.

Under Section 122 of the Penal Code 'Whoever collects or attempts to collect men arms or ammunition or otherwise prepares to wage war with the intention of either waging or being prepared to wage war against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong or any of the Rulers or the Yang di-Pertua Negeri or abets the waging or the preparation of such war shall be punished with imprisonment for life or imprisonment for a term not exceeding twenty years and shall also be liable to fine'.

It is understood that the 30 activists were detained at the Sungai Dua toll plaza near Kepala Batas in Penang while on their way to attend a gathering in support of the Bersih rally planned for July 9.

Abdul Rahim said in Penang today that it was believed that the group was also trying to revive the communist ideology.

So they (not PSM but UMNO and its tool, the Police) have revived the old communist bogeyman.

Preposterous? Of course. Look, you, I, UMNO, Hisham, the Police, all know that it's sheer utter bullsh*t.

But it's for the consumption of the Heartland, not yours. A threat of communist revival will enhance the clarion call of 'agama, bangsa dan raja', to rally the Heartland to support UMNO.

[From UMNO to Heartland: Oh, by the way, can you all make that into a vote please, just leave the actual fighting to us; each of your vote for UMNO will be like a bullet for our army].

WHO'S LOOKING INTO THE NEEDS OF THE ELDERLY IN MALAYSIA??

Consider these statistics:

By 2050,
~ The number of persons in the world aged 60 years or older is expected to almost triple.
~ In developed countries, there will be two elderly persons for every child.
~ In developing countries, the proportion of the older population is expected to rise to about 20%.
~ The number of 'oldest-old' people, those who are 80 years old or over, will increase from 86 million in 2005 to 402million. Most of them will live in the developing world.

The UN categorizes any nation with 10% of its population aged 60 and above as an ageing nation. Going by this definition, Malaysia will reach ageing nation status by 2035 when a projected 15% of the population will be aged 60 and above. That's less than 25 years away. How is the country preparing to cope with the increase in this demographic group? Do we have the necessary systems and structures in place to meet the needs and demands of an ageing society?

Lifelong learning programme of activities for senior citizens.

A look at our neighbouring country Singapore tells us that we are, as usual, lagging far behind. The island nation has a Minister in charge of Ageing Issues in the Prime Minister's Department. There's the Council for Third Age that promotes healthy and active ageing. It organizes the annual 50plus Expo and Active Ageing Carnival. There are dedicated NGOs that are looking after the concerns of the elderly, like the Tsao Foundation and the Centre for Seniors.


Clementi Community Centre, Singapore

The Ministry of Health's website shows a comprehensive list of hospitals, as well as residential and community healthcare services available to the elderly. The Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports offers financial assistance to those unable to support themselves, including the aged. The Ministry of Manpower has a special portal just to address the issue of re-employment of older employees.

There are policies in place to help the elderly like the Maintenance of Parents Act. The >60 Design Centre is Singapore's National Design Centre for Ageing. It was set up in 2008 to generate products and services to improve the lifestyle of older adults. The Housing and Development Board is committed to providing suitable and affordable housing for Singaporeans aged 55 and above. Every community centre in the republic has a programme of activities for senior citizens. The facilities at these centres are well maintained.

There is no lack of excellent role models of successful ageing in the country, and this includes former PMs Lee Kuan Yew, 87, and Goh Chock Tong, 69. LKY is well-known for his tips on how to live a long and healthy life.

The point of highlighting Singapore's initiatives in meeting the needs of the elderly is to provide a blueprint for our government to get started on preparing for Malaysia's ageing population. What has it done so far? Almost nothing that comes close to the Singapore government's all-out efforts.

From what I've seen, the majority of our community centres are run-down with barely any decent facilities to speak of. The senior citizens' associations offer little more than line dance, karaoke and taichi classes. The National Council of Senior Citizens' Association (NACSCOM) has a website that has not been updated since 2008 as far as membership is concerned. There's hardly any content worth reading on the site.

The same applies to most of the government websites. The Ministry of Health's official website is an embarrassment, while that of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government is a joke. Why do government websites require visitors to sign in? Elderly concerns come under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development. The page devoted to 'senior citizens' on their website is absolutely pathetic.

As for role models, I don't recall any of our former PMs taking the lead in implementing policies to raise the quality of life for senior citizens. During his 32-year tenure as PM, Dr Mahathir, 86, could have easily been the perfect inspiration of successful ageing, but he preferred to devote his energies to other areas of more importance than old people who are considered unproductive and contribute little to the economy.

There are people who will come to the defence of Malaysia. They say it's not fair to compare Singapore, a tiny nation of 5 million people with Malaysia which has a population of 28 million. Ok then, let's compare Singapore and the Greater Klang Valley, or only the greying population of the two countries. Whichever yardstick we choose, Malaysia still comes up short.

There's so much that needs to be done to prepare the country before it reaches ageing status. The clock is ticking away. In the meantime, the elderly continues to be neglected. There's no sustainable policy, plan or programme to cater to the physical, financial and emotional needs of the aged. Whenever the Budget is announced, there's is only token allocation for the elderly. We have token visits to old folks homes, token donations, token ceremonies and token assistance. Mostly for publicity purposes, to give a token impression of the work being done for the warga emas of this country.

What can we do to make the government take notice of us? Take to the streets in a peaceful demonstration?

Don't Walk Away From Democracy

More than a week to go and Blitzkrieg* has already been employed.

It started off with the arrests of Parti Sosialis members. Then the roadshows organised by the BERSIH 2.0 steering committee were stormed and closed off to public.

Now, they are proceeding with the arrests of the committee members.

The news on the ground is that Haris Ibrahim is the next on the hit-list. The info I have received is that he will be detained either today or in the coming days.

Please pray for Haris. I have never really been religious, but these are tough times and those who have put more effort in making this country a better place deserve all the support they can get.

This rally has garnered the most amount of attention from the authorities. I suspect this is going to be the biggest event we have ever had politically.

Probably the most important as well.

This is why it it even more important for the rest of us to continue the fight for justice.

Kurang ajar Terengganu motorists

I must say that Terengganu drivers of so-called "souped-up" cars (in Bumiputera sense, that is a set of sports rim and an exhaust outlet the size of their head with blaring sound-effects to go) are the most inconsiderate, irresponsible and incompetent i.e. f_cked-up kurang ajar a$$holes, on national road.

This mothafucka tried to overtake my vehicle, with oncoming vehicles on the opposite road, and just squeezed infront of my car, regardless of ample space needed. Of course I had to yield to this f_cked-up Bumi idiot, I don't want to die because of a Malay bugger. The best part is his car was not even "souped-up", it's just a plain Viva. The driver truly deserved my respect for playing Russian roulette on a sardine-tin vehicle.

Another driver (this time in a "souped-up" 90's Satria) was chasing/racing with another vehicle and again I was caught in their Bumi past-time. This Malay mothafockas would squeeze you off the road during no-brainer overtaking stunts and then sped off. They then sped off using the emergency lane, with headlights and double-signals on, and cutting-in inconsiderately in between vehicles when the emergency lane ran out, again causing other motorists to slam their brakes and vehicles behind them sway to avoid hitting them buggers.

With the stroke of a pen just before midnight on Friday, Governor Andrew Cuomo legalized gay marriage in New York, making the state the sixth and by far the largest to have a same-sex marriage law on the books.

The victory is all the more remarkable because it comes just two years after gay marriage supporters badly miscalculated their support in the same chamber, watching their same-sex marriage bill go down by a 24-to-38 margin after a dramatic floor debate.

Gay rights groups were optimistic that a vote this year would not share the fate of the 2009 bill, although Friday's passage came after days of debate among Republican senators on whether to hold a vote on the measure at all. But that internal discussion occurred against a larger backdrop of social change and political forces that made the passage a same-sex marriage bill easier this time around.

In contrast to the uncoordinated campaign gay-rights groups launched in 2009, advocacy groups joined together under the banner of New Yorkers United for Marriage and organized a massive operation on the ground and over the airwaves. And this year's push was led by popular Governor Andrew Cuomo, whose leadership stood in sharp contrast to that of former Governor David Paterson, who seemed feckless to many gay rights advocates in 2009.

As older New Yorkers passed away and younger ones with more tolerant attitudes took their place, the percentage of voters in favor of gay marriage kept on going up and up, from 37 percent in 2004 to 58 percent at the beginning of this month.

Those numbers, according to Quinnipiac University pollster Maurice Carroll, made gay marriage in the state "inevitable" in the long run. Earlier this week, Ruben Diaz, Sr., a Democratic state senator and Pentecostal reverend who staunchly opposes gay marriage,used that same word.

But in the Senate chamber where Diaz serves, the fight for same-sex marriage rights had long looked like an uphill struggle. The measure needed 32 supporters to pass, and with Diaz as the only of 30 Democrats opposed, gay rights activists needed to pick off three Republicans — and perhaps a fourth to provide political cover — for the measure to pass. With strong opposition from many members of the Republican caucus that controlled the body, few senators looked as though they could be won over. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who gave $900,000 to Senate Republicans, also pitched undecideds on his limited government perspective on same-sex marriage rights.

Earlier in June, phone bank volunteers inside the New York City offices of the Service Employees International Union, which has supported the bill, were treating same-sex marriage as anything but an inevitability.

Over the course of two hours, Leone Kraus, who runs a blog about working in marketing "from the gay perspective" and describes herself as growing up in "a very conservative Catholic household" in MIchigan, made 75 calls in search of gay marriage allies.

That marketing experience showed. After a few answering machines, a constituent of state Senator Greg Ball, one of the critical few Republicans still publicly undecided at the time, picked up the phone. In a pleasant yet firm voice, Kraus convinced the voter to leave a short, polite message for Ball with an simple meaning: Gay marriage is something I care enough about to call.

Kraus and her partner Rebecca Hopkinson were campaigning for the bill under the auspices of New Yorkers United for Marriage, an umbrella coalition of LGBT rights groups that came together specifically for the same-sex marriage rights push. The Empire State Pride Agenda, the Human Rights Campaign, Freedom to Marry, Marriage Equality New York and the Log Cabin Republicans all joined forces in order to pass a gay marriage bill, in large part because Cuomo more or less forced them to earlier this year.

The organizing around the effort was very different in the midst of the last marriage fight. "There was no coordination back in 2009," Hopkinson said. Now she and her partner, along with dozens of other volunteers, used rapid dialing phone bank software that could patch people in directly to their senators — a far cry from the personal cellphones they used two years ago. Their mere presence in the Midtown office building that hosts SEIU, moreover, was a testament to the vocal support of the state's labor unions.

One Senate Democrat who flipped his vote from 2009 told the press recently that last time around, 79 percent of the people who contacted his office on the issue were against gay marriage. This time, the 4,839 of 6,015 people who called or wrote were in favor. "In the end, that is my vote," Senator Joseph Addabo, Jr. said.

"For us to personalize it makes it resonate more than just poll numbers," said Kevin Nix, director of the Human Rights Campaign. New Yorkers United for Marriage, the umbrella group, sent hundreds of thousands of pieces of mail and made hundreds of thousands of robocalls. The Human Rights Campaign alone deployed 30 full-time organizers and spent more than $1 million in the state.

The contacts gay rights activists and allies made with undecided Senators were personal and oftentimes philosophical. They were also demonstration of how electorally charged the issue may prove to be in 2012.

In the press conference to announce his support, Addabo cited the shifting poll numbers in his district. Both gay activists and those opposed to same-sex marriage have pledged to punish their opponents in the 2012 elections. Particularly ominous for the Republicans is the state Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long's pledge to withhold his endorsement of anyone who votes in favor of same-sex marriage rights.

Long has wobbled before on such pledges, but in New York, where small parties with big-sounding names wield outsized influence, the Conservative endorsement is oftentimes enough to send a Senate candidate over the top.

At least one Senate Republican, Roy McDonald, said that in the final assessment, he just decided not to listen to ultimatums from the Conservative Party and bombastic warnings from Roman Catholic Archbishop Timothy Dolan about the "ominous threat" of gay marriage.

"[F]uck it, I don't care what you think. I'm trying to do the right thing," McDonald saidwhen he announced his support for the bill earlier this June.

For those Republicans who weren't so indifferent to the torrent of advocates from both sides attempting to sway their opinions, Cuomo had another ace up his sleeve: the support of the Gill Action Fund, which spent almost $1 million in last year's election defeating candidates who had opposed same-sex marriage last time around. That money, provided by Colorado multi-millionaire Tim Gill, demonstrated that any Conservative Party support would be matched by gay rights campaign dollars against them in the 2012 elections.

Much of this successful strategy was directed by Cuomo, whose popularity has not faded even after the announcement that his budget would cut 10,000 state jobs. Cuomo made same-sex marriage one of his top legislative priorities and the high poll numbers and groundswell of support from ordinary New Yorkers might have made little difference without his determination.

On Thursday, Cuomo and his staffers wrapped up negotiations with three Senate Republicans over one final knotty issue that had prevented a floor vote until then – the question of how many exemptions should be granted to religious groups and individuals who oppose gay marriage.

With that deal made, Sen. Stephen Saland (R-Poughkeepsie) announced his support for the measure on Friday night during the floor debate. The mass of people gathered inside the iconic Stonewall Inn cheered Saland on, even as he dryly detailed the technicalities of the religious exemptions.

The Stonewall crowd was even more enthusiastic for the second last-minute convert to support gay marriage, Sen. Mark Grisanti (R-Buffalo), who gave the bill its fourth Republican backer.

"I cannot legally come up with an argument against same-sex marriage," Grisanti said during floor debate. "Who am I to say that someone does not have the same rights that I have with my wife, who I love, or to have the 1,300-plus rights that I share with her."

The people at Stonewall went wild. Grisanti had recognized the logic of the phrase "marriage equality": Marriage was simply a right, one that no legal gymnastics could take away.

And then, just before he announced that he would vote in the affirmative, he said: "I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife."

Then, at 11:55 p.m. on Friday night, Governor Cuomo signed the Marriage Equality Act into law.

Local marketing guru Anas Zubedy agrees with Ong that the coffin gimmick in the neighbouring republic is not only offensive, but also stupid.

"At Zubedy (training, development and consulting firm Zubedy (M) Sdn Bhd), our principle is that our branding needs to be DBS – different, better and special. The (Indonesian ) coffin sending stunt is also DBS – different but stupid," he quips, adding that he also does not believe that any publicity is good publicity.

Anas goes further to oppose the term and practice of "publicity stunt" in business.

"The word 'stunt' shows that we don't respect customers. We should not do publicity stunts – we should only communicate our message – as creatively as we can – to our target group," he says.

Crucially, adds Anas, the publicity campaign needs to be conducted within the framework of ethical marketing foundation, which is based on the values of the culture.

In Malaysia, with our diverse cultures, we have to be culturally aware to avoid making mistakes and offending anyone.

Less monarchs, but more revolutions, few generals but outnumbering mutinies, rich food but relentless breeding, more money but less purchasing power, expansive democracies but weighty coalitions, emerging religiosities but crippling dogmatism, waning mega-terrorism but mushrooming medium terror outfits, unimaginable connectivity but countless spam, development projects but unmentionable scams. The list is endless.

If one was to pick up the thread from the tragic event at the beginning of the millennium, the Iraq war was the next. Much has happened since. The execution of a despotic ruler, but now a country without a stable system of governance. The hunt of the al-Qaida chief went on long enough with elimination and at times revival of terrorist groups. Surprisingly, the sudden demise of the fugitive terrorist after a military operation has not so much opened the question of who is likely to replace him. It has given rise to livid speculation regarding who should lead the intelligence agencies, and give lead to combat operations now onwards. There is a crack in the loyalties of a few allies, even as military, political, diplomatic and fundamental mindsets have begun to screen each other with more suspicion than ever before.

The revolutions sweeping northern Africa and spreading into mieast and partly even to this country add to the change in order. Where it has struck roots, alternative forms of governments are difficult to imagine in the near future. A particular form of government is empowered not so much because it is decidedly the best in ideology. It takes its place due to a particular mindset of the people who so decide. History has shown, that no matter what people call their form of government, it finally is their own recipe with an acceptable name.

Economic morphosis seems to go pari-pasu. The superpower went for a self-bailout and within a year one has seen the economic bailout of three European nations. What are setbacks to the world's second largest economy due to natural disasters is not directly a derivative of this discussion, but there may be afterthoughts of proliferation of nuclear plants, even if the purpose is purely civil. India's own discovery of an unprecedented lack of governance and surfeit of graft, which seems to be quite acceptable is startling no less, considering the cultural ideology that gave birth to the nation.

In the end, the few individuals that are attributed to be pivotal to the present change in order could well have been any other. It is a matter of perception to call some "villains" and others "heroes". In the eternal script these are all "characters". The spreading "disorder" in which societies, governments and eventually humanity exists appears to be the "order" of the day. Everyone has a stake, either by omission or commission.

The change comes within half a century of what the world concluded was an end of "the forces of evil". Was there a "fly in the ointment", or a seeming state of control was visualized, that was not to be or was subject to the "entropy" of all human governing systems, that include belief, dogma, even religious interpretations to an extent. The present turmoil is quite apart from the missions of Lincoln, the Mahatma, King and Mandela. We are in a tower of Babel where the guns do the talking. Where one misunderstanding is answered by creating another more empowering, and where confusion is settled by keeping it confounded.

This one is the periodic drama that humanity undergoes from time to time. It has happened in different scripts in the past. Mythology is full of such stuff. The only scare is that it has perpetrated to the level of every individual life on the planet. It is affecting every mindset. Everyone seems to know, and everyone seems to let it go. The constancy of the right and the wrong is no longer for us to ponder. What matters is what really matters

I haven't written for a while, and many things have transpired in the meantime, ranging from a RM1.8 million facebook tourism campaign by Ng Yen Yen; rising cost of living, porn show in KL Magistrates Court, and to top the icing on the cake - BN, UMNO, Perkasa, Utusan, and "independent" MP's daily tirades against Bersih 2.0.

I'm not going to say a lot here, just that when the cause is a just and clear one, then there is only one thing left to do.

Join in. It's now or never. Make it count. Do your part for the society.

Your parents, friends or relatives may be concerned if you show up at the gathering points, and you may not want to be in the line of fire of the tear gas, chemical jet water or police baton, but you can still contribute. Be out there. Wear yellow, or if you seek to confuse the police, wear a tone off yellow, light orange perhaps. With logos such as Digi. Raise a yellow flag at home if you want to. Or tie a yellow ribbon on the aerial of your car if that's the only thing you can do. Not only in KL, but throughout the country. And folks overseas - you'll have it better without police intimidation. As long as we all do something. Be seen. Show solidarity for a just cause.

This isn't written by me, but I thought it had some very salient points. So here it is, reproduced on my blog.

The mainstream press and the ruling politicians are sticking to the description of the Bersih march as `illegal'-but why `illegal'? This question is very important-as it may be where rationality/argument/public choice-based democracy depart from arbitrary/capricious/discretionary/haphazard dictatorial rule! So let us examine the likely `reasons' for making the Bersih `illegal'!

Does it affect the traffic? Many official functions involved closing of roads eg National Day procession. Traffics are diverted in pre-announced orderly way. There are some inconveniences-but few people will complain about it beyond a short period. So why can't the police re-direct traffic for Bersih march?

It will reduce business of the shops along the way? Affected they will be -some positively as there are more people dropping their cafe, restaurants, convenient shops etc. Surely some few shops may lose some business-just like what a rain may have caused. This may not be a really likely reason-of all reasons!

Then you have the `threat to national security' excuse which had been invoked often enough. Does it mean that there will be weapons used by the marchers? Does it mean that there are marchers who have proven tendency to use violence? The first Bersih march in 2007 disproved these suspicions. De-facto Minister Nazri's reported remark that there is no `peaceful' gathering in the Malaysian laws speak for itself. If we go by that interpretation surely all government gatherings should also be stopped-including the National Day procession! A derivative of that reason is: the official functions have police permit. But this is a circular argument-which does not excuse the giver of `permit' viz the police, from giving the reasons why a gathering is considered `illegal' while others are `legal'. When a police said that a gathering is `illegal' simply on account of lacking a police permit, it just means that the police had not provided the reason why they don't approve the permit for the gathering. If they had a good reason they should come out with it to sound more credible and convincing!

In addition there is also another smart sounding argument: demonstrations scare away foreign investors! The facts are: without so many demonstrations foreign investors are leaving Malaysia to other countries! Another fact: foreign investors come from democracies where peaceful protests are daily occurrences and they are going to other countries where there are also common occurrences of peaceful demonstrations! Freedom seems to attract FDI-not lack of it! Obviously some of those chambers of commerce people who regurgitate such arguments against public assembly are from the ruling parties who feel pressured by the issues brought up by the protestors!

Then the un-tendered reasons: is it because it is organised by the civil society and not endorsed by the ruling party? Apart from being discriminatory on political ground this excuse basically disrobe all the `reasons' above as mere naked excuses to suppress the citizens' rights to hold a gathering! The related reason that Opposition parties will be involved fall under the same excuse as there is no laws saying that Opposition parties cannot hang around a gathering organised by themselves or others. When the police hide behind their discretionary power to deny the public any credible reasons for them to exercise their power they actually degrade their credibility and professionalism because they open themselves to suspicion of pushing political agenda on behalf of the political bosses!

If Bersih is disapproved simply on political ground then the people are entitled to march without regards as their right to march is then similar to their right to vote freely. It is the people's rights to make their political choice freely-even though they may suffer the violence from the politicians who abuse their power over the police to get the police to attack their political challengers/opponents. The planned attacks on the marchers certainly is an abuse because the police will not be addressing violence from the people-who are peaceful, but create violence under the order of the ruling politicians! From the keeper of law and order the police would have been mis-directed to become a political lap-dog of the ruling politicians!

The PDRM are also part of the civil/public servants. As such they should act to serve the people-not the ruling politicians especially not as their political attack dogs. The voters didn't vote them to act this way. The ruling parties lack a legitimate basis to abuse the police who are also paid for by tax payers from all political persuasions. Only dictatorial regimes abuse the state security apparatus to attack its people and to protect not the national security but the security of the regime!

Compare to if you hire a security guard: if the guard start to beat you up for failing to heed his orders to you would you still want the security guards or their supervisor? While the ruling party could be used to assuming the role of the `supervisor' of the security guards of the nation their abuse is not something the people are ready to put up for too long!

At the end of the day the people do want the police to exercise their power on a rational transparent way. They should act on clearly spelt-out, non-discriminatory set of rules that are free of political manipulations. This is the kind of police force a democratic country would provide. Based on the performance of the police so far it is sad to say that we have a`regime protecting' police force than a people protecting security force. Their lack of transparency on their refusal to protect peacefully assembled citizens lose them respect. They deserved to be fired at the nearest opportune time-which could be when a more people friendly party take over from the dictatorial regime now!

SUPP ‘Disturbing Statements from Party Members”

I will "swim and sink together" with the party. There is no other party for me except SUPP. How often have we heard these words coming out from politicians. Countless I presume and we will not hear the last of it. This sort of promise is so easily said and broken easily too.

I remember someone told me once,"my friends could not swim so they sank ; and we could swim so we swam to safety. So will the SUPP loyalists sink or swim?

Earlier we heard from the SUPP lawyer and a party loyalists,"My blood runs deep for the party but the dragging on of leadership changes after losing so badly will be like another nail in the coffin when the General Elections is upon us.

The former President Wong Soon Kai stepped down immediately after his loss and why not George Chan. He is just putting on a show and he does not want to step down it seems. He controls the party and the SG does not have much say in the party as one can read from the constitution.

Does the party want him to stay and thats a million dollar question?

Principal assistant director of the dakwah division of the Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Mat Ali Sarbini, said the beer "is regarded as illicit until and unless the council rules otherwise."
He said samples of the beer were being analysed at a university laboratory.

University laboratory, heh. Not only is your freedom taken away, but government resources are wasted on ridiculous and wasteful things like testing beer in a lab. I suppose the Malaysian government chemists and lab techs have nothing better to do. Islam wages jihad -- both peaceful and otherwise -- until it becomes the government.

Do you know why the UMNO-led government (meaning UMNO itself) is sh*t scared of 'Bersih', so much so even the (supposedly neutral) Head of the EC had his butt kicked by towkay to do his bit to persuade the organizers from abandoning the rally march?

Do you know why Perkasa has been let loose from its leash to threaten the non-Malays from participating, in tones and contents that, in any other country with an ISA and anti-sedition laws, would have seen the proponent of those racist threats jailed for a lengthy time?

Do you know why both Perkasa and UMNO Youth were galvanised into organizing counter rallies against Bersih?

No, it's not Anwar Ibrahim - he's damaged goods, especially in a country obsessed by sex, and which hypocritically and realistically expect its leaders to be the Mufti of Mecca!

PKR claimed that the court proceeding of the "Datuk T" trio yesterday was proof that there is high-level conspiracy to destroy Anwar Ibrahim's political career.

Yesterday, the trio, former Malacca chief minister Rahim Thamby Chik, former Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim and businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah pleaded guilty at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate court to screening a sex video to the public.

The trio screened a video allegedly showing the opposition leader engaged in illicit sex with a prostitute to several journalists at Carcosa Seri Negara in March.

In the proceeding yesterday, one of their defense attorney, Muhamad Shafee Abdullah told the court that forensic analysts from the US confirmed the man in the video was likely to be Anwar.

In a statement today, PKR vice president N Surendran said the alleged identity of the person in the video and it authenticity was completely irrelevant to the case yesterday.

"And by not being a party to the proceedings, Anwar had no opportunity to defend himself against the allegation," said Surendran.

The PKR leader then lashed out at the prosecution team for not reprimanding the trio's defense lawyer when the latter was smearing Anwar.

Surendran added that it was also worrying that the courts have allowed itself to be used by certain quarters for unlawful and unjust purposes.

"What happened yesterday was disgraceful and sickening, Worse, the trio merely received a slap on the wrist for their crime," he said.

While Shazryl and Shuib was fined for RM3,000 and RM 1,500 under Section 292 of the Penal Code respectively for their offence, Rahim was slapped with a RM1,000 fine for abetting in the crime under Section 109 of the Penal Code.

Section 292 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of not more than three years and a fine.

Meanwhile, Bar Council president Lim Chee Wee described that the court's decision in allowing the video to be shown as "shocking" and "extraordinary."

He stressed that there was no reason to do since those accused of screening the video had readily admitted to the crime.

"There is no need to because they have already pleaded guilty; I am surprised why the sex video was shown in court.

"This is an extraordinary procedure, I am shocked as to why it happened... if a person has already pleaded guilty there is no need to (reveal the evidence)," Lim told The Malaysian Insider.

The lawyer said the court's action was inconsistent with standard procedures in such cases, where evidence is only revealed during the course of a full trial and when the accused maintains his or her innocence.

DESIDERATA: I am sad that after the sacking of then Lord President and five senior judges way back in 1988 (to check date?), the Malaysian judiciary once held in high esteem among Commonwealth countries has been on the slide towards a banana republic's courts standard. Post-Salleh Abbas, despite a few changes of the Lord President/Chief Justice with each new one promising "judicial reforms" to capture back the days of repute Malaysia enjoyed on the international stage, we have only seen some cosmetic changes, and the slide down the slippery slope has continued.

Add to yesterday's magistrate decision, Desi can only say he was clearly acted beyondhis powers and on instruction to let the Datuk T three stooges get away with mere slaps on the wrists. Fines is fine in the magistrate's eyes indeed, after a Trio of apparent scums had been allowed by the Close-One-Eye PDRM to let them roam free for some two months before pressing these charges. How dirty can the Electoral Commission be when Kelantan has remained under the PAS opposition party since 1990 and in the last General Elections which took place in 2008, 5 states in the peninsular fell to the Opposition Pact of DAP-PKR and PAS?

One of the states @ Perak returned to the governance of the BN when 3 Opposition State Assemblymen and woman declared themselves to be independent and supported the BN Coalition.

Morally that act of betrayal by the 3 Opposition Perak State Assemblymen and woman is wrong but then, that's the way that the Western Democracy system adopted by our nation works!

Beberapa jam yang lepas saya mendapat panggilan talipon memberitahu saya yang Khairul Anwar Ahmad Zainudin, dari AMK PKR telah ditahan oleh Polis kerana memakai baju-Bersih dan nampaknya rally yang dirancang Bersih ini memang memberi kesan kepada rakyat kali ini. Jikalah benar rakyat tidak bersetuju dengan tuntutan Bersih untuk mengadakan pilihanraya secara adil dan saksama tidak mungkin Polis mengambil tindakan terhadap sesiapa yang memakai baju-T Bersih.

Ini merupakan satu tindakan yang agak keterlaluan dan ini membuatkan orang ramai merasakan tidak lagi merasakan hidup secara bebas yang lazim diamalkan oleh rakyat negara yang bebas dan demokratik. Jika tekanan terhadap rakyat dilakukan sampai sedemikian rupa ini menunjukan secara terang yang pihak yang sedang memegang kuasa itu sudah tidak berkeyakinan lagi akan diberi mandat oleh yang yang memilih.

Takkan lah dengan memakai baju T Bersih sudah menjadi kesalahan. Kenapa hendak menekan sampai ketahap ini. Rakyat akan merasakan kebencian terhadap kita dengan lebih teruk lagi dan kita juga yang akan menerima kesannya. Kita boleh melakukan apa-apa tindakan yang munasabah untuk mempertahankan apa yang kita dapat dari rakyat, tetapi jika kita terpaksa menekan sebegini rupa semata-mata untuk mengekang desakan rakyat ini sudah melampaui batas yang bermoral.

Kita hendakan kesinambungan sokongan rakyat, tetapi jika rakyat benar-benar tidak lagi mahu memberikan mandate kepada kita, ia tidak bermakna kita ada kuasa secara moral dan undang-undang menekan manusia sehingga kepada pakaian yang kita pakai. Kita telah mendesak rakyat supaya tidak menyokong rally yang bakal di adakan pada 9hb Julai nanti. Kita tidak mengeluarkan permit untuk penganjuran itu. DAN sekarang mereka dicegah memakai baju T Bersih itu merupakan satu tindakan yang 'autocratic' yang tidak ada batasnya.

Jika kita hendak menjadikan pakaian yang bersimbulkan gerakan rakyat dan parti-parti politik maka kita juga mesti melakukan larangan terhadap mereka yang memakai baju UMNO, PKR, PAS, DAP, MCA dan mana-mana parti politik dan pertubuhan NGO yang lain.

Presiden Marcos merupakan seorang dictator tetapi dalam pemerintahannya masih ada dua tiga saluran TV yang terang-terang menentang kerajaan. Saluran itu terus beroperasi dan Marcos dictator itu tidak pula menangkap dan menahan mereka yang mengendalikan saluran TV itu.

Jadi kita boleh bertanya kepada diri kita sekarang ini. Jika diktator Marcos boleh membiarkan saluran TV beroperasi dengan agak bebas, apa pula hendak kita katakan terhadap pemimpin kita yang begitu takut dan marah untuk mendengar rungutan rakyat? Bukankah ianya lebih teruk dari pemerintahan dictator?

Jika kita bermaruah jangan lah kita tunjukan sifat 'perongos' kita sehinggakan menelik dan meneliti pakaian dan 'attire' yang dipakai rakyat. Bersih bukannya parti politik dan NGO ini hanya mahukan perjalanan pilihanraya dijalankan dengan seadil adilnya. Seruan ini sepatutnya disokong oleh UMNO sendiri kerana sebagai parti yang mengaku sebagai parti yang bermaruah melakukan sesuatu dengan 'transparent' sepatutnya menjadi pakaian hidup kita.

Cukup-cukuplah menyalahkan pihak lain kerana kita sudah jatuh sokongan ramai. Tentu ada sebabnya yang kita ini di tolak dan dipersoalkan oleh orang ramai. Oleh kerana kita mempunyai jiwa yang fakir, kita sentiasa mendengar dan melihat segala tindakan rakyat dengan 'suspicion' yang begitu melampau.

Kepada NGO bersih saya ada pandangan untuk saudara/i fikirkan. Jika memakai baju-T Bersih itu merupakan kesalahan saya cadangkan supaya Bersih menjual seluar dalam yang ada logo Bersih pula.

Kita mungkin akan terjumpa pihak Polis menelanjangkan rakyat ditepi jalan jika mereka (polis) mensyaki mereka yang memakai seluar dalam Bersih. Saya cadangkan Datuk Ambiga memakai 'panty' Bersih. Kita tengok bagaimana Ambiga akan di telanjangkan oleh pihak dan merampas seluar dalam yang beliau pakai itu. Saya juga mencadangkan Kementerian Dalam Negeri membeli mesin pengimbas untuk memeriksa siapa yang memakai singlet atau seluar dalam yang berlogokan Bersih.

Dengan tindakan yang dilakukan terhadap mereka yang memakai baju T Bersih di Shah Alam semalam kita sudah menunjukan satu 'attribute' yang nyata sebagai pihak yang mempunyai jiwa yang terlalu fakir.

Tidak hairanlah kita melihat apa yang tidak sepatutnya berlaku pada hari ini berlaku dengan jelas. Pemimpin yang elok itu mesti ada setidak-tidaknya sedikit sifat 'gentleman' dan akan menerima dengan hati yang terbuka apa-apa yang di pilih oleh rakyat.

Jangan kita sampai begitu takut sehinggakan melakukan perkara-perkara yang tidak wujud di dalam masyarakat yang bertamaddun. Firaun telah membunuh semua kanak-kanak lelaki yang dilahirkan kerana ahli nujum telah memberitahu Firaun yang ketika itu akan lahir seorang kanak-kanak (Musa) yang akan menentang kekuasaannya.

Akhirnya Musa lahir juga dan mengalahkan firaun di lautan Merah.

You decide if you are capable, eh!

Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib Tun Razak said the public can decide whether the man featured in a sex video clipping is indeed that of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.
"This is something they have to judge for themselves. The most important thing is to determine the authenticity and find the truth. It's up ton the people to decide," he said recently.
My only problem is if the video is authentic and the man may turned out to be the leader of the opposition, then the police report that he made to pronounce the video was doctored and the man featured in it was not him was false, shouldn't he then be also charged for making a false report? Isn't it against the law to do such thing?
Or may be he thinks the laws in this country is a joke!? He probably said to himself: "Hey I can fucked Malaysian judicial system and laws at any time to my liking and nobody can touch me-(sniggered)."
Well, as far as I am concerned the man feature in the sex video clipping is that man. There is no doubt in my mind that it is him! You decide then! Read further here....

Yes, the government has brought us development but that is our right as citizens of the country. That is the right of every community in the country, not the Malays alone.

Why talk about hudud or implementing syariah law when we cannot fulfill the basic tenant of Islamic jurisprudence which is justice.

Why cut the hand of a man that steals bread when leaders continue to swindle our riches?

Is the objective of Islamic law to only punish? I think not.

Islam is not a about grand mosques or prayer rooms but the people.

Where were the so called Muslim or Malay NGOs when the Lynas plant was announced or more recently the landslide that killed so many innocent children?

The call for an Islamic state is a luxury when the poor continue to beg for mercy.

We should stop questioning other races but start questioning ourselves and what have we contributed the country.

On the eve of your departure for London you must be busy. I'll try to be succinct in response.

Your analogy of the race is graphic and valid. But it assumes that there is a Malay tendency to blame our Chinese sojourners for our malaise. It's an easy target but my perception is that Malays generally are not in the same arena, race if you may.

We Malays and our earliest power owners, the sultans, have always been rentiers not producers of wealth. The Chinese are predisposed by nurture and culture to wealth creation and have been practicing this habit in Malaya since their arrival here. They have fine tuned their ability to understand Malay frailties and exploit them from the top to the bottom of the Malay polity to create wealth and status for themselves. The manifestations of this capability are clear. I need not belabour the point. Asa race they are awesome in their willingness to go to the last mile to be wealthy and to achieve worldly status. In this context one can only appreciate their drive.

We Malays have never entered the race of your analogy. We are in it by default.

Our leaders and ourselves too have never imbibe the Socratic injunction to examine ourselves to make our lives worthwhile. I hesitate to say that we have never as a homogeneous entity ever develop a soul building philosophy. That is because Malays are heterogeneous and thinking about who we are and what we are, are foreign to our culture. We have Islam, yes. but in general only the practices, the orthopractice not imbibed and live the philosophy. The philosophy of life as enshrined in the Quran has never been discussed across our society and to become an ingrained habit of thought and action of our selves and our young. That is a quote from Yusuf Al- Qaradawi's book(1991) " Islamic Awakening- between rejection and extremism where he discusses injustices from the Quranic perspective.

Al- Qaradawi in fact was quoting Syrian Scholar, Jawdat Said in his book, in Arabic ,entitled(trans)- "Until they change what is in their hearts". Said said . " ... that the core of our problems is not an external injustice but, rather, the injustice that we bring on ourselves by virtue of what is inside us. This is the law of history and society which the Quran affirms. Failure to realise this plain truth blurs our vision and generates philosophies which are either pessimistic and passive, or despotic and anti-Islamic".

I have no solutions to the malaise of the Malays. The Malay middle classes are growing, shukur to Allah and alhamdulliLah. I believe that its this middle class that must coalesce to lead that strong optimistic and Socratic mental set at the human level. Finally Allah is the Arbiter and Granter of fulfillment.

When the whistle is blown, all six run at the same time. But, at the end of the race, the Chinese still take up the first, second and third positions. The Malays runners are still left behind (but this time may not be to far behind).

In the above two imaginary races, the the Chinese racers have made the Malay racers left behind. This is the fact. But,the pertinent question is: Do the Malays racers put the blame on the Chinese competitors, for making them lose the race, each time?

I think, in the above analogy, the Malay runners should accept the fact that their loss is due to the fact that Chinese competitors are faster, stronger, better trained and have more determination than themselves. And through no fault of themselves. Who then, are in default?

Supposing, another race is organized. This time, no Chinese will take part. Only just three Malays compete among themselves. The outcome is predictable, isn't?: the first, second, and third would Malay. But, when compared the times performed by the victorious Malays and against the Chinese, which group has run faster for each position?

In the above case, should the three Malays ask for more handicap, say up to 60 meters ahead from the starting line? Rather than to ask for more handicap, I think they should undertake very hard training, imbue themselves with steadfast determination and motivation to succeed; infuse themselves with the highest confidence, be prepared to face all challenges.

And if need be, the govt shall design such exercise in disciplines and programmes for them, and make sure they will swear to follow and execute with diligence, until each can become as strong, and as fast a racers as the Chinese.

As for the slogan "Ketuanan Melayu", I would borrow from the slogan that Tun Abdullah Bedawi had once introduced. I suggest, therefore, that "Ketuanan Melayu" be changed to: "Kecermerlangan, Kegemilangan dan Keterbilangan Melayu". Terima kasih.

FLASHBACK Exactly nine years ago, PAS president Fadzil Mohammad Noor, who was the parliamentary opposition leader, died after a heart surgery. The following is an obituary first published in Harakah and also appeared in London-based Muslim current affairs magazine Crescent International.Fadzil Mohammad Noor, president of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) and parliamentary opposition leader, died on June 23, two weeks after undergoing heart-bypass surgery.

His death comes at a time when the party he led is struggling against accusations of militancy since the crackdown on 'Islamic terrorism' by the Malaysian government. But his departure also comes at the height of PAS's prominence; under his leadership the party has become a force to be reckoned with.

Muslim Trial Run for 30 days - Dave Stacey of America tries it out!

After agreeing to adorn Muslim attire and go through the usual hassles that a Muslim has to go through in Islamophobic America, Dave Stacey gets an immediate hostile reception when he goes through the airport. For the first time in his life, he gets stopped by airport security, is frisked thoroughly, gets the magnetic wand treatment, asked to remove his shoes and his luggage fine combed by the suspicious airport security.

Things that most Muslims go through almost every day throughout the American cities and other parts of the Western world suspicious of anybody who is a Muslim, looks like one and dresses as one opens up Dave to the realities that Muslims have to suffer day to day for the rest of their life's?

I think this documentary is an eye opener for those who wish to know how it must be for Muslims in different countries and as for Dave, in America itself?

I'm sure that such a trial period will definitely open up Dave to a roller coaster up and downs moments that will sure rock his own faith to its very core.

JUNE 24 — Dear Lim Guan Eng,

Peace be with you.

Let me state my position very clearly. I am a centrist. I do not work for Barisan Nasional or Pakatan Rakyat. I do not belong to any political party. I am a rakyat. I am a voter. I vote for the best person for my constituency, not which party the candidate is from.

I firmly believe that what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong, no matter who does it. I care about unity and work to promote unity. I will render my service to any party that will work for unity.

I am one of those people who were glad to see the growing co-operation between the DAP and PAS. I see it as the best gift March '08 has given to our nation. When two Malaysian blocs who have avoided each other for decades can now sit down together and share a meal, it is reason to celebrate.

“The Hit Group”

Idris Jala is a person I respect, even though I do not necessarily agree with his views, especially in the past year or so.

I have written an article praising him some time back: Success story of a Bumi CEO.

He is also one of the few that warns that Malaysia can be a bankrupt country in a few years time, if we do not do away with subsidies. Indirectly, by saying so, he actually hinted that wastages and leakages may lead this country to bankruptcy, hence there was so much of reaction against him then..

Today, he was quoted to say that the economy can absorb an official inflation of 5%.

In the Malaysian context, a 3% inflation is already very high, since i have a feeling, and a lot of people agree with me, that the CPI does not really reflect market prices. Whenever there is a 3% increase in CPi, you can be sure that many things go up more than 3%. Food prices, house prices and rentals, electricity tariff, transport costs and entertainment costs (Astro for example) are among some of the things that have gone up a lot. A lot of other things have gone up too.

An example is that medicine prices have gone up; even colds medications have gone up 300% in the past year, because of the Ministry's directive to restrict import , sales and production of a component called pseudoephedrine , and thus there was an artificial shortage of colds medicine containing pseudoephedrine in the market, and thus prices went up almost 3 times. It is a drug that can be abused of course, just like any other drugs, but because of the abuse of a small group of patrons at certain night spots, the ministry imposed restriction of import and production of a drug that is being used by so many others..

This is a mentality that sounds similar to that of banning file sharing sites. Just because some info in these sites infringes on copyright, there is a blanket block of these sites… The correct things to do is to inform these sites of those materials that infringes on copyright and ask that these materials be deleted, as many sites have done in the past.

The correct things to do, with regards to colds medication, is to have strict law enforcement, and not by restricting a medicine which is used by so many for relief of colds and nose blocks. Nab the culprits that abuse the drugs by all means and let others who need them have access .

Now, back to inflation and the economy!

The 7% rise in electricity tariff is said to affect only a quarter of users. But many of these quarter of users actually run the retail businesses and manufacturing businesses, and hence these increase will be translated as increase costs for goods and services.

I realise that all the increases actually hit at the same group, which I would like to called " The Hit Group", more than anyone else. This is also the middle income group.

While the rich has plenty of reserve to cushion them of any ugly inflation, and the poor are sometimes helped by some of the government programs, it is this group that are worst hit in any inflation situation.

This group is among the one million who pay income tax to support the other 26 millions. Majority of this group stay in urban areas, and are also the group that is hit by increase in electricity tariff. This group, because of its work nature, is also the group hit most by increased hawker-food prices since because of the nature of their work, they have to eat a meal outside..

This group is also among those who subscribe to internet, astro and hence are hit by increase in Astro fees (I concede that Astro can actually be done without). This group is also worse hit by house prices or rentals, and rising bank interest and petrol price increment.

This group, unfortunately is also the group that does not qualify to apply for a low cost home, or study loan for children.

Now, back to Idris Jala's figure of 5% inflation that we are going to face. The econmy can withstand this 5% increase, says Idris. Our experience tells us that a 5% increase in inflation rate means that most things will go up more than 5%. Many things will go up more than 10– 20%

If things go up more than 5%, I doubt that this middle income group can withstand anymore . As I have mentioned in another article " when belts cannot be tightened anymore", their belts have already be pulled to the limit and cannot be tightened anymore.

I suspect Idris is trying to prepare the populace for another subsidy cut.

What this group of people hopes is that the government be more understandable of their woes. Have more incentive and tax break for this group, too.

Money can actually be found if there is less wastages and leakages. There is really no need to squeeze this group any tighter..

Bersih pt 2: What are the real motives?

Here is part 2 to my article "Bersih: A government gripped by paranoia?". Would appreciate your help in spreading it, in the off chance it resonates. Thanks!!

Amidst the posturing and chest thumping, let's try to think objectively about how July 9th might play out.

To understand this, we need to understand the key players as well as their potential interests, motives and motivations.

To be fair, let's begin with the Bersih steering committee – what kind of people seem to be leading the way?

The individuals in question are: Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan (Chairperson), Andrew Khoo, Arumugam K., Dr Farouk Musa, Haris Ibrahim, Liau Kok Fah, Maria Chin Abdullah, Richard Y W Yeoh, Dr Toh Kin Woon, Dr Wong Chin Huat, Datuk Yeo Yang Poh, Zaid Kamaruddin, Dr Subramaniam Pillay and Arul Prakkash.

The profile of the fourteen steering committee members seem to indicate individuals who currently demonstrate zero political ambitions and zero political affiliations. Many members have been as critical (if not more) of Pakatan Rakyat as they have been of Barisan Nasional, and I reckon none of them suffer the view that changing the government will solve all of Malaysia's problems and render civil society useless.

Google these individuals – do they look to you like people who crave power for themselves? Do they seem to you the type of people liable to be manipulated, or take kindly to being told what to do – least of all by politicians?

Ibrahim Ali

One of the chief antagonists of the Bersih saga is noted "frog", Ibrahim Ali. Let's take a look at his record and attempt to ask the same simple question: what does he want?

At best, Ibrahim Ali has proven to be an ignorant racist. At worst, he is a devious political animal of the same class as Slobodan Milosevic and Theoneste Bagosora, who took ethnic hatred to unimaginably brutal extremes.

I read Ibrahim Ali as a pompous, self-important man who seems to exhibit signs of having a Napoleon complex. Notoriously unable to abide by any firm political principles, he has instead begun to revel in the great amount of attention to himself quite simply by spewing the most extreme racist incitements as sensationally as he can.

This strategy is not misinformed per se – his relevance in Malaysia, insofar as he has any, is built entirely on his bigoted views; views that are as morally wrong and misguided as they are sexy looking on headlines.

So, for my money, Ibrahim Ali wants in on July 9th because he's clamouring for the spotlight – both on the day itself, and every day before. He is content to surround himself with rabble rousers who use racial ideology to mask a lack of ability to make it on their own merits – anyone who is not a bigot like them just becomes a target for venting childish frustrations. (I would be more worried about reprecussions of writing this if I thought those Perkasa guys could understand all the words in the last few paragraphs. Malays and Malaysians can find much better role models out there).

Despite Ibrahim Ali's every effort to draw attention to himself by wielding the sceptre of riots and violence, I ultimately think he is not the one who will be making important decisions in the first ten days of July. How July 9th goes down will, I think, depend instead on others.

Khairy's sandbox politics

Next let's examine the other big group who seems to want in on the party – Khairy Jamaluddin's Umno Youth.

Discussing what makes Khairy tick would take an article onto itself. He is clearly a man of some intelligence, though exactly how much would seem to not always be apparent.

He has commendably criticised Ibrahim Ali's inciteful remarks, and I for one do not believe he is a racist at heart, or is possessed of any outdated, misguided notions about what makes for a sustainable social fabric.

Despite all this however, Khairy seems to still want to take his Pemuda boys down to the streets come July 9th. This truly beggars question as simple as it is burning: Why?

The stated reason Umno Youth will be gathering is to "strengthen the democratic system".

It is hard to articulate the disbelief reading this inspires. They want to strengthen the democratic system by refusing to support a movement to clean electoral rolls, provide free and fair access to the media, strengthen public institutions, stop corruption and end dirty politics?

As if that wasn't enough, they want to bring tens of thousands of people to march through the streets of KL on the same day as a large crowd of people they have accused of being political enemies?

Bringing such a crowd to the streets KL on such a day can only mean one of two things: a) that you are so stupid as to be unable to see the likely negative consequences, or b) that you have put your pursuit of other selfish interests (self-aggrandisement, personal fame, and acting like the angry small boy who doesn't want to be left out of the party) ahead of the likely consequences of your actions.

Confucius say that man who bring angry youth to rally of perceived enemies can only be looking for trouble.

For all his many faults, I think we know what to expect from Ibrahim Ali and his Perkasa (Pekida?) boys – the man is a raving lunatic, we hardly expect any less. But Khairy? I think we all expected Khairy to know better, and act with more honour and decency.

If he was trying to make some point about being able to rally numbers, or suck up to the Electoral Commission and the Prime Minister, surely a rally on the 8th or the 10th of July would have been just as effective? Why risk explosiveness by showing "strength" on the same date that was decided by Bersih first months ago?

I don't expect Ibrahim Ali to know or want any better – the man is a fool who will gladly stir up trouble in pursuit of deluded goals. Khairy on the other hand? I can only hope his own sense of self-importance will not put the welfare of others at risk.

Crossroads for BN

Of course, theory has it that only one man really calls the shots. So, what is PM Najib going to do?

We start again by historical analysis. Najib is notoriously indecisive. From the days of when Mahathir and Tengku Razaleigh were duking it out, right through when Abdullah was at his weakest, Najib simply bides his time to the very last moment – sacrificing principles for the politcal expediency that waiting for the very last minute allows.

This is greatly unfortunate for Malaysia, because we sure could use some principled leadership right about now.

I believe that a Prime Minister with integrity would respect the rakyat's right to assemble peacefully, and stop viewing this rally through a lens of paranoia that is concerned only about possible negative implications to his own political fortunes.

A statesman would know that what is at stake here goes beyond any one man's career or party. A statesman would understand that there is no democracy whatsoever without a free and fair electoral system. A statesman would have nothing to fear from a gathering of the people he was entrusted to lead.

Is Najib anything like a statesman? I guess we'll find out by July 9th.

Endgame

At this point of time, three major scenarios seem possible.

Firstly, Najib and gang sees the light of day and actually lets the rally go peacefully, with each group being separated in an orderly fashion.

Secondly, the government decides to use all this talk of violence as an unjust excuse to commence an Ops Lalang style crackdown, and throw a large swath of activists into detention – probably without trial.

Thirdly, on July 9th, Perkasa and Umno Youth refuse to rally on another day or venue, and people with sinister intention cause all hell to break loose on the streets of KL. The implications of this are almost too horrible to ponder.

I can't help but recall Dr. Kua's thesis that the May 1969 riots were in fact orchestrated as part of a political ploy to seize power. I think we remember who replaced the more liberal Tunku Abdul Rahman as prime minister.

I think in the days to come, we will see heightened demonisation where Bersih is responsible for everything from website hacking to the occupation of Palestine. I think we will see Ibrahim Ali continue to spew nonsense, and we will see – perhaps once and for all – what the likes of Khairy and Najib are really made of, beneath their 1Malaysia veneer.

I hope, for all of our sakes, that reason and justice will prevail. I hope as well that Malayisans from all backgrounds and walks of life will see July 9th as a day to restore integrity and decency to the heart of our nation. It is a day to be fearless; a day to demonstrate that you love Malaysia enough not to let it slip away into the darkness; a day when we bring back a Malaysia we can be proud to pass on to our children.

The Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress (Kimma) a.k.a Mamak Association has asked the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, to revoke the datukship of former Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan for planning an illegal gathering on July 9.

Kimma Youth chief Amir Hamzah Abdul Rajak said the action should be taken against Ambiga for defying the authorities by planning to go ahead with the rally.

Kimma' call for the withdrawal of the state award was made in a memorandum submitted to Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Shamsul Baharin Hasan at Istana Iskandariah here today.

Speaking to reporters after handing over the memorandum, Amir Hamzah claimed that that Ambiga tried to instigate the people, especially youths to take part in an illegal assembly, which could cause chaos and threaten public order.

Yesterday, Perkasa, a Malay right wing group also called for Ambiga's datukship to be stripped.

Makcik Har Logic will tell you that if someone does not want to be a member of any club, he or she is free to leave right ? No, certainly not in this country. Sunny Sheu: Murdered for Investigating NY Foreclosure Judge Joseph Golia?

The details are thin but they sure don't smell right. The short form is that Sunny Sheu had his house stolen from him by fictive buyers who used forged documents. Judge Golia of Queens engaged in what appears to be highly questionable behavior in failing to reverse the sale. Sheu started investigating the judge, was told by policeman who specifically referred to information he had provided about Golia, and that if he didn't drop it, he'd wind up dead. Sheu disregarded their warning and did wind up dead. The authorities are also refusing to honor requests for information regarding Sheu's death made under New York's Freedom of Information Act. This story has been publicized by Foreclosure Fraud and The Daily Bail and I hope it gets more traction.

First, the background, as reported in Black Star News:

Sheu's ordeal began over 10 years ago when a bank representative knocked on his door and said he was there to inspect the house for its new owner. The problem was that Sheu had never sold the house. It turns out that someone had forged critical documents and used them to illegally sell the property.

Sheu alerted all relevant authorities; including the police, the bank that held the mortgage, and the title insurer of the property. Eventually the parties involved in forging the documents were prosecuted, pleaded guilty to forgery, and went to jail.

Sheu hoped that with all the evidence in his favor, the matter would be quickly resolved–it was actually only the beginning of his nightmare.

But Centex Home Equity, the bank that held the original mortgage, acted as if the fraudulent sale had been legitimate, ignoring all the documentation submitted by Sheu regarding the fraud, including the police report he'd filed.

Centex filed a lawsuit on December 12, 2001, against Sheu in State Supreme Court, in Queens County. The bank wanted a default judgment on the property and foreclosure, claiming that the "new owners" were delinquent on mortgage payments. In reality, of course, there was never any legal "new owner".

The Centex case against Sheu went before Judge Golia, in Queens County. Sheu said he was stunned when Judge Golia also ignored the obvious fact that the "sale" had been fraudulent, which would obviate the claim against him. Instead of immediately restoring Sheu's rightful ownership, he said, Golia allowed the lawsuit to proceed, eventually leading to the foreclosure of Shue's home.

The plight of our Press Secretaries

I was told that a Press Secretary to a Cabinet Minister has resigned last week. He is the same person who once served another minister but was asked to resign for performing the 'umrah' without the boss' consent (although he was well-informed about it).

I suppose there were problems between him and the 'junior' minister. When asked about it via a text message, the only reply I got was, "dunno la bro, its hard to work with him".

Almost all press secretaries are chosen from among senior journalists in the mainstream media, except for one or two officials from Jabatan Penerangan or even from other private organisations. Journalists usually make good press-sec as compared with those from other sectors.

I know many of them ever since I started my carrier as a cadet reporter back in 1981. Most of them were good, a few made it big while one or two had to turn back to their former employers. A few had died, too.

To me, press secretaries are important people. In many countries, a press-sec holds the key to a President's or a Prime Minister's success in politics and also in introducing certain policies to the constituents. And in many countries too, a press-sec is above any political-secretary (some governments dont even employ political secretaries).

A press-sec does almost everything. Apart from ensuring that his boss gets sufficient media coverage, he also has to strategise his boss' political position. Without a good and proper publicity, his boss may deemed as a 'dead politician'.

Those who found entries to the Prime Minister office are considered the 'very lucky' ones. They are the envious of many other press-secretaries. As far as I can remember, only a few ministers had shown appreciation for their press-secs, travelling together with them in the same official cars and making full use of their professionalism.

One Prime Minister had never left his office without having his press-sec to sit next to him in the car to ensure that both would be able to discuss matters of any function they were about to attend. That's how a press-sec was deeply appreciated.

US President Barack Obama makes it compulsory for his press-sec Robert Gibbs to be with him most of the time and to join him in the same vehicle that takes him wherever he goes. Former Singapore PM Lee Kuan Yew also did the same for his press-sec Yeong Yoon Ying.

However, in the recent years, most ministers would hire a press-sec for the sake of having one. They would not have them in the same car or helicopter. This bosses also like to compare them with others and belittle them in public, treating them like strangers. Some even dont have that level of trust for their own press-secs.

Most ministers nowadays would attend a 'far-away function' which requires them to take a flight, i.e to Kota Bharu, only to be accompanied by their bodyguards and special assistants. His press-sec would be left to drive all the way up, and by the time he arrives, he would already be overcome by fatigue.

I must admit that there are few press-secretaries who fail to function well enough but the bosses didnt make any effort to replace them. However, we must also admit the fact that not all ministers have the brain to hold such portfolios. Some are appointed just to fill up the race quota.

Of course, any press-sec is appointed on a contractual basis but so are a political-sec and a senior private-sec (SUSK). A press-sec does more work than any pol-sec and SUSK but the gap in salary doesnt commensurate with such loads. I know a few journalists who once received a monthly salary of between RM6,000 and RM8,000 had to settle for an offer of RM5,000 or less as a press-sec. A press-sec to the PM or DPM should get higher pay.

There are ministers who place high expectations for his press-sec when they themselves are the dumber. Most of them dont have any knowledge in dealing with the Press but still refuse to take advise from their press-secs.

As for this friend of mine who just resigned (was he asked to?), your boss may have thought that you are somebody like Dana Perino or Tony Snow who used to serve former US Presidents, but he himself is not fit for the portfolio!

Rally Bersih sudah 'international' pula

Rally anjuran Bersih akan secara serentak juga diadakan di negara-negara lain pada 9hb Julai ini. Malaysian Insider melapurkan yang rally tersebut akan di adakan di Osaka, Seoul, Melbourne, Sydney, New York, Los Angeles dan California.

Rakyat Malaysia yang menetap di negara-negara tersebut telah bersetuju untuk bersama-sama mengadakan rally tersebut dan kebanyakan dari mereka itu telah tampil secara sukarela untuk bersama-sama menganjurkan rally tersebut pada hari yang sama.di tempat dan bandar mereka tinggal.

Di bandar-bandar tersebut tidak ada pula mereka dicegah dan tidak pula rakyat di sana merungut kerana menjejaskan perniagaan mereka. Di sini berbagai-bagai macam alasan yang dibuat untuk mengelakan rally ini di adakan termasuk lah alasan yang rally itu akan menjejaskan perniagaan di tempat rally itu di adakan.

Malahan ada pihak yang berbohong yang rally anjuran Bersih pada tahun 2007 dahulu telah menjejaskan perniagaan peniaga-peniaga selama 6 bulan. Bagaimana peniagaan boleh terjejas selama 6 bulan itu tidaklah saya tahu bagaimana ianya jadi begitu. Alasan yang lain termasuklah ianya akan menjejaskan pelaburan asing negara.

Di Thailand rakyatnya telah berdemonstrasi selama hampir 6 bulan tetapi Thailand tetap merupakan negara yang paling banyak pelabur-pelabur asing datang untuk melabur; jauh lebih tinggi dari negara kita yang jarang-jarang rakyatnya berdemonstrasi. Pada tahun-tahun yang akhir-akhir ini Malaysia hanya mampu untuk menyaingi negara Myanmar sahaja dari segi penglibatan pelabur asing.

Saya bukan penggalak demonstrasi jalanan, tetapi saya tidak dapat menerima alasan-alasan yang diberikan tadi kerana ianya menampakan sangat yang kita diberikan alasan-alasan yang hanya kanak-kanak sahaja yang mungkin mempercayainya.

Bersih telah memberikan jaminan yang rally itu merupakan rally yang aman dan jika berlaku perkara yang tidak di ingini ianya bukan datangnya dari pihak Bersih. Malahan Bersih telah meminta semua pihak termasuk parti-parti dalam BN untuk menyertainya untuk mendesak pihak berwajib yang mengendalikan pilihanraya melaksanakan PRU dengan lebih adil dan telus. Jika pilihanraya dilakukan dengan adil ianya akan menjadikan negara kita lebih diyakini oleh rakyat negara dan masyarakat antarabangsa kerana mandat yang di dapati itu adalah mandat yang legitimate.

Yang menyangkutkan Bersih dalam isu ini hanyalah permit dari pihak Polis. Yang lainnya Bersih telah memberikan tujuan dan matlamat rally ini di adakan dan Bersih juga meminta parti-parti dalam BN untuk bersama. Bagi saya BN patut menuruti apa yang dilakukan oleh Bersih kerana kita mesti bersedia untuk menjadi pembangkang dalam keadaan sekarang ini.

Jika tidak di adakan sistem yang adil maka BN sendiri akan menghadapi masalah jika komponen ini di letakan oleh rakyat untuk mengambil 'role' sebagai pembangkang selepas PRU ini. Seandainya BN menjadi pembangkang maka sistem yang tidak adil ini akan diguna pakai oleh parti alternatif apabila mendapat mandat rakyat. Justru apa yang ingin dilihat oleh Bersih ini ialah untuk menjaga setiap pihak tidak akan tertekan dengan sistem pilihanraya yang tidak adil.

Bersih sebagaimana yang saya tulis dalam posting-posting yang lalu mempunyai tujuan yang betul. Itu sebabnya Bersih telah memohon untuk mendapatkan permit dari pihak Polis untuk menunjukan manifestasi rakyat sebenarnya. Tetapi pihak berkuasa merasakan yang tuntutan Bersih ini akan memberikan lonjakan yang kuat terhadap pembangkang kerana pengalaman yang di alami hasil dari rally Bersih pada tahun 2007 yang lalu.

Tuduhan terhadap Bersih memihak kepada pembangkang itu nampaknya dimainkan dengan sepenuhnya oleh pihak yang berkuasa, sedangkan Ambiga sendiri telah memberi amaran kepada Anwar Ibrahim supaya tidak masuk campur dalam urusan rally ini. Bersih telah menyatakan dengan jelas yang semua pihak dijemput termasuk BN untuk menjayakan rally ini.

BN mengambilnya sebagai rally yang ditakuti mereka akan memihak kepada pembangkang. Malahan dengan reaksi negatif pihak berkuasa itu dengan otomatiknya rally ini dianggap sebagai urusan pihak pembangkang. Itulah sebabnya blog ini telah menyatakan acapkali yang advantage yang diperolehi oleh pembangkang itu diberikan sendiri oleh pihak parti yang berkuasa.

Reaksi negatif yang ditunjukan oleh BN itu secara terus dan direct telah menambahkan sokongan ramai terhadap Bersih samada rally itu benar-benar akan berlaku atau mampu digagalkan oleh pihak yang berkuasa.

Dengan peranan yang sama-sama dimainkan oleh rakyat Malaysia diluar negara untuk menganjurkan rally di negara-negara permastautin mereka itu akan memberikan 'advantage' kepada pihak pembangkang. Dengan keadaan ini ianya memberikan tekanan yang begitu kuat kepada pihak yang memerintah kerana penganjuran rally yang sama oleh Bersih untuk rakyat Malaysia di sana akan menjadi tumpuan masyarakat antarabangsa pula.

Apabila perkara ini berlaku saya bersama dengan pandangan yang tidak kurang banyaknya dari mereka yang menyalahkan pihak ketiga seperti Perkasa dan kenyataan pemimpin-pemimpin yang berkuasa yang terlalu lancang menempelak pihak NGO seperti Bersih ini. Berjaya menyalahkan Bersih bukan bermakna kita telah berjaya matlamat membenamkan pemikiran rakyat. Yang ingin dilihat oleh rakyat yang ramai ialah kebijaksanaan atau pun 'wisdom' impinan yang berkuasa memberikan reaksi kepada rancangan Bersih menganjurkan rally ini.

Apabila ditolak dan dicampur ramai berpendapat pembangkang telah mendapat lonjakan sokongan secara percuma hasil dari lonjak dan tari pihak ketiga seperti Perkasa dan lain-lain. Kata-kata 'kerana lonjak koyak ketayap di kepala' itu sudah menjadi kenyataan. Kita tidak akan mampu untuk mengawal perasaan orang ramai kerana mereka adalah manusia yang mempunyai pemikiran yang berbeza dalam satu-satu isu.

Kita tidak boleh mengawal pemikiran manusia seperti kita mengawal kambing yang boleh direbankan mengikut kehendak hati kita sahaja. Oleh kerana sebegitu lama diyakini kita telah begitu ketagih dengan sokongan membuta tuli tanpa soal dari rakyat. Apabila kita dipersoalkan oleh mereka yang selama ini menyokong tanpa soal, kita menjadi mengelabah dan tidak ada yang bersikap 'magnanimous' termasuk Menteri Dalam Negeri sendiri.

Inilah jadinya jika kita lawan api dengan api. Sepatutnya kita lawan api dengan air yang sejuk untuk memadamkan kepanasan api tadi. Pihak kita yang sedang berkuasa hanya pandai mengugut kerana itulah senjata yang digunakan sejak dulu hingga sekarang. Tetapi saya tahu pandangan saya ini akan dibidas oleh mereka yang malas berfikir atau yang tidak tahu untuk berfikir. Tetapi itu tidak mengapa bagi saya.

Bidaslah sekendak hati. Kebenaran akan zahir juga akhirnya.

The Home Minister finally speaks and it is not the announcement everyone has been waiting for. Not only did he ban the Bersih rally by refusing to grant its organisers a permit, he sinisterly called them to the the Bukit Aman headquarters for a grilling.

This has upset many civil society leaders, who are not part of the Bersih movement, although they support the principles of the rally, which basically is a call to Malaysians to insist that Prime Minister Najib Razak ensures free and fair elections.

"By refusing to issue a permit is to make it illegal. So to punish those who take part is very unfair. Why should the permit be withheld in the first place? By doing so, the government will be seen as forcing the people to take part in an illegal activity," Ramon Navaratnem, past president of Transparency International told Malaysia Chronicle.

"My advice is to let the rally proceed. This is the people's fundamental right under the Constitution. Sure, there will be trouble and crowd control will be tough. But that is the job of the police. Let them do it. Everyone has their role to play in our society. The rakyat or populace, the NGOs, the government and the police."

But to Hishammuddin Hussein, the Home Minister who is also Najib's cousin, the Bersih rally is 'evil'. He tried to show he is fair by not only banning Bersih but also Malay rights group Perkasa and the UMNO Youth. However he only drew criticism as both Perkasa and UMNO Youth are linked to his political party UMNO. He further insists that his priority is the safety of the people.

"My statement today is that all three parties will not be granted permits to gather on that date. I am saying that categorically, all three of them will not get it. I have already stated that immediate action must be taken on this matter and police will call all parties involved because although we have said that we are not going to grant them permits, the statements from Perkasa, UMNO Youth or Bersih, indicate that they plan to proceed," Hisham said on Wednesday.

Lalang déjà vu?

Déjà vu!

In 1987 the nation was facing rising political tension with racial issues embedded. The situation was tinder dry with clowns pouring paraffin onto piles of kindle.

The issue?

Protests against the government's decision to send non-Mandarin qualified principals to Chinese vernacular schools.

Guess who was the (UMNO) Education Minister? Wakakaka!

There was bipartisan political support against the Education Ministry's decision, but alas, this was where the racial element supposedly crept in - the bipartisan stand against the Education Ministry were from the Chinese-based party MCA and mainly Chinese-based Gerakan, both part of the ruling party BN, and the opposition DAP, a party demon-ized for years by UMNO and thus perceived as a Chinese party by Malays.

Gathering at a KL Chinese temple together with Dong Jiao Zong (Chinese educationists & parents association) they vociferously voiced their anger and disagreement with what they saw as the Education Minister's ulterior motive to weaken the leadership and administration of the Chinese vernacular schools. They threatened to boycott the vernacular schools for 3 days, though this specific threat was subsequently withdrawn.

However, the choice of a Chinese temple as a venue for the protesting parties was most unfortunate because it provided justification for then-PM Dr Mahathir's to conduct pre-emptive arrests. He subsequently alluded to the Chinese gathering at Thian Hou Temple in KL as a Shaolin-type rebellion against the central (Qing) government.

While he didn't mention the word 'Shaolin' wakakaka, every Chinese Malaysian understood what he meant when he said (as I was told), words to the effect, the history of Chinese groups gathering at a Chinese temple to protest against the government, has shown this to be dangerous for the authority.

How did Dr Mahathir know about the history of Shaolin? Maybe he was informed by his Chinese (or SB Chinese specialist) advisors, or maybe he was a closeted Chinese kungfu movie fan wakakaka.

In typical Malaysian political jaguh (heroic) fashion, an intrinsic characteristic of our ethnocentric political culture, UMNO Youth responded with a planned mass counter-rally. Someone declared he wanted his keris to be dripping with Chinese blood.

The rest is history, which saw Ops Lalang launched.

Now, what did I say at the very beginning of this post?

Déjà vu!

Yup, the political situation today is not unlike that in September 1987, with the tinder dry escalating political tension, racism at its worst, a protest (Bersih) is planned, a counter protest by a favoured party (Good Lord, it's the same one though with a devolved name), the keris is implied by someone telling the Chinese to stock up with emergency food, etc etc. Three names involved in 1987 are still with us today, namely Najib, Anwar and Dr Mahathir.

Ops Lalang II?

If that comes about, make a guess who'll be eating nasi kamunting, some perhaps for a second time under a new Lalang sweep?

WEAR YELLOW ON 9 JULY TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

You just can't believe everything you read in the mainstream media.

I was at the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall last Sunday for the launch of Bersih 2.0. I find it incredulous that reporters covering the same event can come up with different interpretations of the event. Some chose to omit certain details to give a misleading picture of what actually took place.

Invitations were sent out to all major political parties, including those from the ruling party Barisan National (BN) as well as from the Opposition parties. The front row seats were reserved for them. However, none of the BN component parties sent representatives. It's misleading to say that the Bersih 2.0 launch was an Opposition sponsored event. It seemed to be so only because the BN had obviously boycotted the launch, while the opposition turned up in large numbers. A pity, as BN could have made use of the platform given to each representative to make known their party's stand on the need for electoral reforms.

Many of my friends who supported Bersih 2.0's demands were afraid to turn up at the launch because they were worried that political activists would be out in full force to create mayhem. In actual fact, the crowd was made up of people of all ages, races and walks of life. There was a family with their young daughter sitting behind me. There were grey-haired retirees like me everywhere I looked, and youths too, especially from the universities and colleges.

Perkasa members reportedly burned and stamped on photographs of Bersih chairman Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan on Sunday. Its leaflets have depicted Datuk Ambiga, a former president of the Malaysian Bar, as a 'dangerous Hindu woman' and a threat to Malay Muslims. (Source: Straits Times 21 June 2011)

This is the real troublemaker - Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali. He made a thinly-veiled threat about possible racial riots breaking out if Bersih's rally on July 9 went ahead as scheduled. He warned the Chinese to stock up on food supplies as "anything can happen" on the day. The following day he said his statement was twisted by the online press. He was merely 'advising' the Chinese. His group Gerak Aman is also planning to hold a "Peace March" on the same day. Bersih has repeatedly said their rally would be a peaceful "Walk for Democracy". If both groups have assured the public that their respective rally will be 'peaceful', why should Ibrahim, or anyone for that matter, expect trouble?

Ibrahim was also quoted as saying "When there are protests, I don't see the Chinese joining in. They never take part in street demonstrations. The clash is between Malays and Malays." (The Sun 22 June). Well, the NGOs that turned up at the launch to pledge their support and participate in the rally were of various ethnicity. Among them were the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, OHMSI (a Christian-based group) and The Tamil Foundation. All have promised to send their members to the rally on 9 July. Opposition MP Nurul Izzah takes the mike to pledge support for Bersih 2.0. Behind her are representatives of various NGOs. PAS has said 100,000 of their members would be at the rally.

MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was present at the launch, but her father was nowhere in sight. Datuk Ambiga in her speech pointed out that the decision to hold the rally was made by Bersih, not Anwar. She made it very clear that Anwar had no authority to speak or make decisions on Bersih's behalf. So don't believe everything you read in the papers about Datuk Ambiga being Anwar's stooge, or that he is using Bersih 2.0 as a ploy to further his political agenda.

The rally is much more than just a call for electoral reforms. Here are Bersih 2.0's eight demands:

1. Clean the electoral roll.
2. Reform postal ballot.
3. Use of indelible ink.
4. Minimum 21 days campaign period.
5. Free and fair access to media.
6. Strengthen public institutions
7. Stop corruption.
8. Stop dirty politics.

Nothing racial or political in these demands. No right-thinking Malaysian would object to any of these eight demands. At the launch the audience was shown a video that gave proof of vote-buying and vote-rigging during the recently concluded elections in Sarawak.

The right to assemble peacefully is enshrined in our constitution. If you can't be at the rally, but would like to show your support for these eight demands, wear something yellow or carry something yellow as you go about your daily routine on 9 July. There will be simultaneous rallies in New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Osaka, Seoul, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, with more cities being added as the countdown to the rally continues. The world will be watching via the major TV news network. Let the world see that Malaysians are capable of holding peaceful street protests to demand fair and clean elections.

	Hisham: Malaysia will benefit Meanwhile, Hishammuddin defended the refugee swap deal between Malaysia and Australia, saying it could become a model for cross-border cooperation in dealing with human trafficking and terrorism. The minister said whichever way the issue is viewed, Malaysia will benefit from the deal as the country will send over 4000 illegal immigrants to Australia, who in turn will only send over 800 refugees. He noted that both the Malaysian and Australian governments agreed to the swap deal as it is one way to take the fight to human traffickers and terrorists, who constantly take advantage of migrants. "If this is done well without polemics and it becoming politicised, this would be a very good model for other hotspot areas in the world," he said. 	Bar Council backs all July 9 rallies, raps Hisham The Bar Council said freedom of assembly is an essential right for a democracy and is thus backing three groups intending to rally on July 9. Bar Council chairperson Lim Chee Wee said freedom of assembly was also protected under Article 10 of the Federal Constitution and the authorities should take heed of this. He said that Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein should not be clamping down on the rallies, reminding him that his grandfather Onn Jaafar had also once taken to the streets in the name of democracy. "It should be recalled that it was the United Malays National Organisation led by Onn Jaafar, the then-president of Umno, who is the grandfather of our present Home Minister, which led the public to the streets nationwide to protest the setting-up of the Malayan Union. The country's civil servants are now taking the brunt of politicians and general public at large from trying to push their message across in terms of scholarships,race and religion.

Malaysians have grown up no doubt and while we grow up they will be many obstacles which the country will faced. Some good laws, some obsolete laws while some needs to be revised and looked into by our parliamentarians and state legislators. 50 years for a country to put everything in order is indeed a very short time.

Not all things will be fair to the naked eye but obviously the people who implement and deliver what the policy holders deliberate must also know that there are a lot of 'sensitive issues which must be dealt with amicably".

Malaysia is a multi racial,multi cultural and multi religious country where Malays,Chinese,Indians,Kedazans,Ibans and other ethnic races live together and surely they will be differences but we accept that we need to live peacefully in accordance with the Federal constitution. If we move slightly away from its origin

"TROUBLE WILL ENSUE"

We are not about to lecture the DAP on this issue but we need to address this issue by angling it correctly instead of politiking on it. Yea,DAP is a political party we know and without a doubt its like scoring points 1 Up to the gallery. We all know too you are doing your job by publicising it but one must remember this is a highly sensitive issue.

Lets take up my case and see whether I make sense or not. We all were young once,brash,radical rebellious and at times uncontrollable. I do come from a staunch Catholic background and when we were young we followed everything our parents threw at us in accordance to our faith and the many no no's which are 'blasphemy' if we break them. I confessed my sins every month without failed. If I did not I imagined I will be attacked by the "devil and his followers"

Religious festivals,prayers were all kept in checked. Sunday Masses were a must and all attempts were made not to miss them. When the boy grew up thats me coming from overseas the boy changed to a man and started questioning. I stopped going to church on Sundays and even had a good 'three hours session being lectured" with my uncle who was parish priest of St Josephs at that time in 1984. He is still a Priest but now the Parish priest of Blessed Sacrement BDC in Kuching Sarawak. (you have my permission to asks him) At the end of the blistering and hard counselling I was given a chance to speak.

I said to him in front of my dad. Why should I go to Church? It doesn't make me any holier than thou.? I also said Why was I not given a choice of religion? Why was I baptise to the faith? Then I could see the anger and the astonishment from their eyes.

My dad replied," Oh Yeah, when you are born if we know you are going to be like that we might as well save the money spent on milk for a better purpose(Want to know the exact words.We might just as well KILL YOU or starve you and leave you for DEAD. no need to waste the duit susu ).See whether you could be like what you are today" Today I see it. Our parents wants the bests for us. They can give us a religion to follow but in the end its up to us to CONTINUE PRACTISING IT. We have our own choices but its up to us.

As for the DAP Komtar assemblyman he is trying to do the bests for his child but it could be a genuine mistake and it also could be put right by seeing the officer in charge. We also do not know what really transpire between him and the NRD clerk on duty. Do you know what actually happen..?? Was the CCTV on??

I must say when I changed my IC earlier this year I tested the NRD lady. Of course I was cheeky and naughty and she took it. She was putting the RACE in my IC I said," Rojak.. she said,"cannot ..how come I said mixed blood so I put Sino/Melanau. She changed to Chinese so I took it eventhough my name had an extra name behind( ….. curious dbl click here)

{The only reason why I changed my old IC was that the immigration officer in Sabah when I entered say this is the last time we allow you to use the old IC and now we have Mycard.

I have a tendency to love to go against the system to tests it fully and I was reminded by the former Home Minister who said,"we can still use the old IC until such time it outlived its usage and will be obsolete. I remember telling the officer I am after all a Malaysian with or without a Mycard. He accepted and after trying my luck in and out of Sabah a number of times it I might just run out of LUCK and I could be turned back to Sarawak for reasons like being a ' bad element/hat". So I became a good boy again. Really…!!! :p

Next it came to Religion I put ATHEIST . { One who disbelieves or denies the existence of God or gods} She said sure or not and I said alright. She doubled checked everything before she put into the system and I asks her NICELY AND COURTEOUSLY boleh kah repeat?

I said not Atheist but a Catholic. I have a choice to lie and should even have capitalised on the system if I wanted while the little girl had no choice.Parents up and down the country will no doubt look into this matter now more seriously and carefully.

To be Speechless I don't think so. Stand up and be Corrected.Help and assists to put it right more like it YB. We have already told you that Malaysia is still very much a young country and we need to help our civil service at times too. The laws that govern the country can be put right through the proper channels and through the Legislative houses i.e in Parliament. The laws might be outdated and thats why you are in position to asks your colleagues in Parliament to do something about it. We told Hannah Yeoh your Selangor DAP YB too and the same goes for you.

More cases of rejected attempts by parents to register their children with the National Registration Department as 'Anak Malaysia' have poured in.

The latest case is that of Komtar assemblyperson Ng Wei Aik (right), who was dealt the same fate as his counterpart in Kuala Lumpur Hannah Yeoh yesterday when he registered the birth of his second daughter Ng Caryn.

Caryn, born on June 11, was registered by her parents as "Anak Malaysia" for race and "Belum Ada (none yet)" for religion.

But when the official birth certificate was issued to Ng, the two sections were written as "Chinese" for race and "Buddha" for religion.

Ng, who is political secretary to the Penang chief minister, is "speechless" that the NRD, without consultation and without his approval, has chosen the race and religion of his own child.

Rather than blaming the officer, Ng targetted his complaint squarely at NRD's rigid system, expressing disbelief that his child was "ordained" a Buddhist when he clearly stated that she does not yet have a religion.

He was equally upset that Chinese was chosen as the child's race instead of Anak Malaysia.

"Why should she decide this for me? This is a serious matter…why we cannot have a choice for our own children, to register them as Anak Malaysia without a religion yet," he said.

"This is the spirit of 1Malaysia and should be encouraged. Our future generation should have the liberty and freedom to decide their own race and religion," he added.

Appealing against NRD's 'unethical act'

Responding to a Malaysiakini article yesterday highlighting that the NRD issued birth certificates without the ethnicity of the child between 1996 and 2000, Ng said it was not necessary to state those two elements.

The issue of ethnicity in birth certificate registration and other official forms was raised after Yeoh, Subang Jaya MP, failed to register her daughter's race as 'Anak Malaysia' earlier this month.

Like in Ng's case, the NRD officer rejected the parents' request and chose 'Chinese' as the race of their daughter Shay Adora Ram.

The NRD has clarified that the race of the child must stem from either parent in a mixed marriage and that no 'mixed-race' registration is allowed.

Though he recognizes that he is ethnically Chinese, Ng still thinks he should be given the choice to select his own race as Anak Malaysia.

He said he was appealing against the "unethical act" of the NRD officer who, when asked, told him that a child must be registered according to the father's or mother's race and religion.

"Our system is outdated and corrupt until there is no flexibility for us to decide our own faith and religion," he said.

"I do not want to force my future generation to follow my race and religion…I do not want them to be like (those) who did not have a choice before" he added.

KOTA BHARU, 23 Jun: "Saya bagi pihak Persatuan Peniaga Pasar Lama MPKB memohon maaf kepada kerajaan negeri di bawah kepimpinan YAB Tuan Guru Datuk Haji Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, yang mana silap laku saya itu saya mohon maaf," demikian pengakuan mohon maaf secara terbuka Pengerusi Persatuan Peniaga Pasar Lama MPKB, Abdul Salim Ahmad.

Berucap pada sidang media sempena Majlis Pengundian Bazar Tok Guru oleh pada peniaga Majlis Perbandaranan Kota Bharu Bandar Raya Islam (MPKB-BRI) di Dewan Jubli Perak MPKB di sini semalam, Salim mendakwa sekiranya beliau telah bertindak kasar dan agresif sebelum ini, maka itu adalah sebagai tuntutan daripada ahli persatuannya.

Sehubungan itu beliau menyeru kepada ahli persatuan serta para peniaga umumnya agar berprasangka baik dengan pihak kerajaan negeri.

Beliau berharap selepas ini, pihak persatuan dan para peniaga berbaik-baik dengan pihak kerajaan negeri dan para pegawainya.

"Berbaik-baik dan jangan salah sangka kepada pimpinan kerajaan negeri dan para pegawainya yang telah banyak membantu kita khususnya dalam segi pemilihan lot-lot gerai di Bazar Tok Guru.

"Kini ada jalan penyelesaian, dan kita pun jemu dah dengan keadaan semasa, berarak sana, berarak sini. Saya sebagai pengerusi persatuan, maka setakat inilah perjuangan saya bersama ahli-ahli saya.

"Saya terimalah mandat kerajaan negeri, dan kita tidak akan bincang (memanjangkan) lagi cerita kita ini," katanya sambil menyifatkan keputusan pihak kerajaan negeri yang meluluskan dibuang sebanyak 26 gerai dengan nilaian lebih RM2 juta sebagai 'kebajikan laluan' di bazar itu adalah sebagai pengorbanan kepada para peniaga berkenaan.

"Ini bermakna, tidak terkiralah pengorbanan kerajaan negeri kepada peniaga-peniaga kita, alhamdulillah," katanya.

Sementara itu, Ketua Pegawai Operasi Perbadanan Menteri Besar Kelantan (PMBK) Sanusi Osman dalam satu kenyataan media berkata, seramai 230 peniaga telah diundang hari ini (22 Jun 2011) bagi menjalani proses pengundian petak perniagaan di tingkat bawah Bazar Tok Guru di Jalan Sultan Ibrahim di sini.

Sementara proses menandatangani perjanjian jual beli akan diselesaikan selewat-lewatnya pada 28 Jun ini dan serahan milikan kosong akan dilaksanakan sebelum 1 Julai.

"Seramai 326 peniaga dijangka dapat memulakan perniagaan di Bazar Tok Guru pada 1 Julai 2011," katanya.

	RCI head: Agong to decide if report to be made public Only the Agong can decide whether the report by the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the death of DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock can be made public. Panel head James Foong said this after submitting the RCI's 124-page report to the Agong at his palace this morning. Another copy will be submitted to the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya this afternoon. The five panel members presented their findings at 10.30am to Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, who had a 30-minute audience with them. The RCI commenced gathering evidence from Feb 14, 2011 and ended its proceedings on May 18, 2011. A total of 70 witnesses testified, and 19200 notes of proceedings were recorded, said Foong. JUNE 23 — Bersih 2.0 is scheduled for July 9 in the KL city centre. Even now supporters are rallying people to take part. The news has gone viral; many are excited.

At the other end, Perkasa wants to retaliate by having a counter-rally with its own supporters. It is talking about a face-off to see who has the bigger group, perhaps who can shout the loudest. Both parties want to prove a point. Both parties have their right, although I see more sense if Perkasa were to organise its rally on another day, another time.

Meanwhile, a number of police reports have been made by business owners and NGOs opposing the demonstration.
