Creativity, Strategy & Ignorance in Economic Policy

Creativity, Strategy & Ignorance in Economic Policy

Creativity, Strategy & Ignorance in Economic Policy

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 05:45 PM PST

How creative can one become in formulating economic policy? I would say, Very!

There are many layers of an economy that the policymaker can focus on. And one can simply choose one particular layer and be deliberately myopic.

Policy can be focused purely on consumption or production, the focus on one will have an impact on the other. One can become increasing adept at consuming or producing or making things. I would say that each one of us spend our entire lives perfecting the art of consumption or production. While we may think that we do all of that - work, eat, sleep - the share each component in our lives defines us, or rather our daily routine. Salary workers spend all their time working, with little time to eat or sleep. Those with cash spend all their time figuring out how to eat, and little time to sleep or do anything productive.

At a higher level, policy can be formulated to define the type of economic system that we prefer to live in or enclose ourselves in. Thanks to Adam Smith who popularise the exchange economy, there is no need for conscious charity and generosity - the world can pretend to do good when it is greedy and selfish - and in the end unfettered capitalism produces the ignoble result of global destruction.

In less enlightened societies, the focus on religious or racial characteristics - attributes which individuals can do very little about, being caught in the torrents of history - as defining policy pivots suffers the problem of being caught with results which are produced by the initial assumption made.

Strategy is therefore nothing but the self-restraint one puts on creativity.

It is the deliberate limiting of the global stage that we, like "creating" a bonsai plant, twist and turn each and every little branch and twig to produce a deformed product which we all then try to admire its twistedness.

In olden times, or rather since times immemorial, the object of dominant people is to invade and steal the fruit of other people labours - for our own benefit and at their expense. This is what we all dream of - the abhorrence of labour - and the only way that this can be done is to create a situation where the unfortunate will have to labour to the delights of others. This is in fact the real heaven that we are all secretly seeking in this dusty earth of ours.

But, alas!, how dismal. Simply for the pleasure of a handful of individuals, whole societies and communities are mobilised to dig up the earth to extract what we need for the moment and to throw away into the naked environment distilled poisons which we do not know how to use for now, and in so doing producing an environment that we all fear to be in.

The mass production of cheap and useless consumer products by the world's most populous nation demonstrated how those who slave do not have the pleasure of enjoying the fruit of their own labour. This is clearly an misguided policy.

The strategy to alter the demographics of a society by importing "young, educated and productive" new citizens in order to cure the ills of an aging society is one that is fraud with danger. The strategy is focused purely on the management of an informal whole will ignoring the condition of the individual constituents. The aging and the infirmed will remain so by the sheer force of nature, while the new, young and energetic will take over and create a sense of vibrant which the underlying layer of the aging and infirmed is unable to defend or retaliate. There is no salvation of the individual.

The degree of self-deception that policymakers can go is amazing. That household debt is now as much as half the national income and deemed to be a non-worrisome "even if it does look like a very big number" is nothing but an attempt for officials to pull wool over the eyes of the public. This is the result of banking ignorance, as they veer deep into consumer lending, unable to revive the budding corporate sector.

KITA - Majlis Pelancarannya Gemilang.

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 05:39 PM PST

Tenang is Umno Johor private affairs!

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 08:59 AM PST

'Other states should stay away this time around. Let it be Umno Johor private affairs. We dont want too many people coming to Tenang'.

I heard this from a govt official. Later on, I checked it out with 3 friends who serve different ministers. And they confirmed it.

There was a 'directive' from Johor State Umno Liaison Committee to other states not to take part (or interfere) in Tenang state seat by-election to be held on January 30. I wouldnt believe it if it comes from one source but I think this people whom I met and called are not liars.

Unlike Galas state seat by-election, Kuala Terengganu parliamentary by-election and all previous by-elections which saw participation from all Umno states, Tenang is an 'all-Johor affairs'. I dont know how its chief Ghani Osman had arrived at the decision.

I think Prime Minister Najib, his deputy Muhyiddin (from Johor), Hisham (from Johor too), Khalid (another Johorian) are aware of it. To me, Johor is over-confident. Otherwise, they wouldnt have 'chased away' friends from other states.

Who's instruction was it? The MB? Or DPM?

I am of the opinion that it was quite unbecoming of Umno Johor to ignore assistance from other states. What is so supreme about Umno Johor that they have to turn away their friends from the same party?

I just hope they can secure a win and a bigger majority in Tenang.

I do not wish to comment any further as I could be accused of trying to provide ammo to the Opposition. Nevertheless, I just want to say one thing - Umno does not belong to a single state or a single leader!

Pelabuhan Kelang: Peluang SPR Melacurkan Diri Mereka Sekali Lagi

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 08:47 AM PST

Speaker isytihar kerusi Dun Pelabuhan Klang kosong
Hazayani Zakaria

SHAH ALAM, 19 Jan: Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri Selangor, Datuk Teng Chang Khim hari ini mengisytiharkan kerusi Dewan Undangan Negeri (Dun) Pelabuhan Klang kosong.

Strict Chinese Parents vs Gentle Western Parents

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 12:57 AM PST

Love this piece contrasting Chinese and Western parental attitudes! But can a softie Westernized banana like me do the same?

Excerpts from Wall Street Journal article:

Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. They wonder what these parents do to produce so many math whizzes and music prodigies, what it's like inside the family, and whether they could do it too. Well, I can tell them, because I've done it

Despite our squeamishness about cultural stereotypes, there are tons of studies out there showing marked and quantifiable differences between Chinese and Westerners when it comes to parenting. In one study of 50 Western American mothers and 48 Chinese immigrant mothers, almost 70% of the Western mothers said either that "stressing academic success is not good for children" or that "parents need to foster the idea that learning is fun." By contrast, roughly 0% of the Chinese mothers felt the same way.

The fact is that Chinese parents can do things that would seem unimaginable—even legally actionable—to Westerners. Chinese mothers can say to their daughters, "Hey fatty—lose some weight." By contrast, Western parents have to tiptoe around the issue, talking in terms of "health" and never ever mentioning the f-word, and their kids still end up in therapy for eating disorders and negative self-image. (I also once heard a Western father toast his adult daughter by calling her "beautiful and incredibly competent." She later told me that made her feel like garbage.)

If a Chinese child gets a B—which would never happen—there would first be a screaming, hair-tearing explosion. The devastated Chinese mother would then get dozens, maybe hundreds of practice tests and work through them with her child for as long as it takes to get the grade up to an A.

Second, Chinese parents believe that their kids owe them everything. The reason for this is a little unclear, but it's probably a combination of Confucian filial piety and the fact that the parents have sacrificed and done so much for their children. (And it's true that Chinese mothers get in the trenches, putting in long grueling hours personally tutoring, training, interrogating and spying on their kids.) Anyway, the understanding is that Chinese children must spend their lives repaying their parents by obeying them and making them proud.

Third, Chinese parents believe that they know what is best for their children and therefore override all of their children's own desires and preferences. That's why Chinese daughters can't have boyfriends in high school and why Chinese kids can't go to sleepaway camp. It's also why no Chinese kid would ever dare say to their mother, "I got a part in the school play! I'm Villager Number Six. I'll have to stay after school for rehearsal every day from 3:00 to 7:00, and I'll also need a ride on weekends." God help any Chinese kid who tried that one.

There are all these new books out there portraying Asian mothers as scheming, callous, overdriven people indifferent to their kids' true interests. For their part, many Chinese secretly believe that they care more about their children and are willing to sacrifice much more for them than Westerners, who seem perfectly content to let their children turn out badly. I think it's a misunderstanding on both sides. All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. The Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that.

Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions, supporting their choices, and providing positive reinforcement and a nurturing environment. By contrast, the Chinese believe that the best way to protect their children is by preparing them for the future, letting them see what they're capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.

Public Rally In Selangor

Hormati Suara Rakyat Selangor

Civil Societies and Selangorians to hold a public rally to pressure the Chief Secretary to declare Khusrin's appointment null and void

Civil society groups and Selangorians have come together to form a Rakyat initiated effort called Hormati Suara Rakyat Selangor (HSRS) to demonstrate their disappointment and anger over the appointment of Datuk Mohd Khusrin Munawi as the new Selangor State Secretary.

This group, formed on January 11, 2011, will soon hold a public rally to pressure the Chief Secretary to the Barisan Nasional federal government, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Haji Hassan, to declare Khusrin's appointment null and void. At least 10,000 people are expected to participate in this public rally.

The Hormati Suara Rakyat Selangor public rally details are as follows:

Date: January 23, 2011 (Sunday)
Time: 4pm to 7pm
Venue: Kelana Jaya Stadium

Khusrin's appointment is a culmination of the relentless attempts by the BN federal government to frustrate the Selangor Administration in carrying out their policies and programmes.

The fact is Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim did not receive the recommended list from the Public Services Department. Since this have been revealed, it is only imperative that Sidek declare the appointment of Khusrin as null and void, as due process and convention was not followed.

The Rakyat in Selangor deserves the right to expect their elected Pakatan Rakyat Selangor State Government to provide the best services. By denying the MB the choice of the top civil servant, the Rakyat in Selangor are also denied their rights.

HSRS's maiden effort in organising this rally is to get the Rakyat to come together to voice their dissatisfaction on the current state of affairs and to show the many instances where the Pakatan Selangor Government policy implementation has been sabotaged by civil servants still loyal to their previous political masters.

At the rally, we will highlight the many instances where local issues for residents could not be resolved due the non-cooperation of the BN federal agencies such as Public Works Department (JKR), police, SYABAS, Social Welfare Department (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarat) and the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

The issues that will be raised include:

* Deserving individuals and groups not receiving welfare / aids services and allocations;
* Ignoring measures to relief traffic congestion proposed by civil societies;
* Abandoned housing projects;
* Rejection of local government proposal to provide auxiliary police personnel to provide security for Selangorians and reduce crime;
* Water coupons meant for low-cost flats and high-rise housing not reaching their intended residents; and
* Arbitrary demolition of traders and hawkers stalls and place of business.

The groups that form Hormati Suara Rakyat Selangor are:

* BERSIH 2.0 – a coalition comprising civil society organisations with the objective of campaigning for clean and fair elections in Malaysia.
* JERIT (Jaringan Rakyat Tertindas) – Oppressed People's Network
* SABM (Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia) – a group committed to actualising the spirit and substance of Anak Bangsa Malaysia – "One People, One Nation"
* CONPAC – Coalition of NGO and Professional Councillors comprising councillors from all 12 local authorities in Selangor who are not members of any political parties and make up 25% of councillors.
* CGG - The Coalition for Good Governance comprises 55 NGOs involved in a wide spectrum of social justice issues.
* Malaysians for Teoh Beng Hock – a coalition of 52 groups echoing the call by Teoh's family for a Royal Commission of Inquiry
* HAKAM – national human rights organisation
* GEL – Growing Emerging Leaders consists of a group of young people who study ways to apply leadership and faith-based principles in day-to-day living
* JIM (Pertubuhan Jamaah Islah Malaysia) – an Muslim-based group promoting development and peace
* Civil Right Committee, Kuala Lumpur & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall
* LLG Cultural Development Centre Bhd - A non-profit organisation dedicated to uphold the principles of democracy, human rights and respect for individualities and ethnic diversities
* Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement – a group taking the lead role in realising our forefathers' aspirations and encouraging the wider participation of civil society in shaping the future of our nation.

Najib avoiding the real question of Teoh Beng Hock's death

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:00 AM PST

Reading between the lines in PM Najib's Razak terms of reference for the proposed Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the Teoh Beng Hock tragedy, we can see very clearly that the RCI will be steered clear of the cause of Teoh's death, or his pre-fall injury which has been established by the inquest's ordered post mortem.

What then would be the f* point of having a RCI if not to establish the cause of his death, so carefully avoided by the government inquest, or who had been responsible for his pre-fall injuries. It's obvious Najib is just trying to buy time for his pending general election.

Instead the terms of reference for the RCI is limited to a minor issue, the MACC investigative procedures. Now, who the f* is interested in the MACC procedures because when a witness walked into its building alive but emerged out of it via a window at the 14th floor, already having pre-fall injuries, to his death, those procedures are undeniably all f*ing rotten.

The crucial issue for Teoh's family and every citizen in this country is the true cause of his death, or to be more blunt, his manslaughter or even possibly murder.

His sister, the intrepid Teoh Lee Lan, bemoans in an open letter to PM Najib of his broken promise, where after 500 days of an inquest, the outcome was still an open verdict. And Najib has the cheek to tell us to look at the bigger picture as if the unexplained death of an innocent citizen (a mere witness, not even a police or MACC suspect) in a MACC building is unimportant. Teoh Lee Lan wrote (extracts):

After one and a half years, we still have no idea how he died. What is stopping the authorities from finding out the truth?

When we complained about the biased inquest, you ignored us; when we demanded for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to probe Beng Hock's cause of death, you did not respond to us.

We still remember what you said to us when we met you last year. You said that the government would conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that no stone would be left unturned.

Yes, we want a thorough investigation. The final verdict of the inquest confirmed that Beng Hock sustained pre-fall injury to his neck. Our family wants to know who caused the injury, how it was sustained and who should be responsible for it.

It has been two weeks since the coroner delivered his verdict which did not rule out the possibility of homicide in a convincing manner.
Why didn't the government continue to investigate the pre-fall injury on Beng Hock's neck?

It's obvious from both the inquest and the terms of reference for the proposed RCI that the authorities are protecting someone in MACC, weaving and dodging around the f* obvious question: Who or what caused Teoh to fall out of that 14th window?

No one less than former MCA President, Ong Tee Keat, had this to say in a letter to Malaysiakini (extracts):

I am shocked by the coroner's open verdict yesterday which rules out both suicide and homicide in the death of Teoh Beng Hock. […]

The loss of life, especially while in the custody of government enforcement officials, is always a serious matter of public concern.

There cannot be no answers for this particular case. It's simply not acceptable that one can die in the MACC's custody without knowing what had happened.

Teoh voluntarily stepped into the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)'s office to give a statement as a witness.

He failed to come out alive, while under MACC's custody.
His body was found sprawled on a service corridor in Plaza Masalam's Level 5 on July 16, 2009.

No matter from which point of view or political divide you see the death, it is just unbelievable, unacceptable and illogical that no one knows what happened to Teoh in a place where security is relatively tight.

Well and truly said, Ong Tee Keat. At least you have the bloody balls to call it as it is, instead of a mealy mouthed attempt by your MCA colleagues to tell the public "not to politicize the Teoh Beng Hock tragedy".

What is wrong with this project?

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 03:41 AM PST

This is quite a standard practice in Malaysia on how some corrupt UMNO and BN cronies cheat money and resources from the Rakyat without people knowing. Just ask Taib!

Petaling Jaya Utara parliamentarian Tony Pua has ticked off the government for entering into yet another deal by awarding a project worth hundreds of billions of ringgit
without an open tender.

Worse still, said Pua, the government is paying for the project estimated to be worth RM600 million to RM700 million by offering the developer a parcel of land worth at least RM970 million.

The project to build the 1National Institute of Health (1NIH) was awarded to Sentosa Jitra Sdn Bhd, a 50 percent associate of SP Setia Sdn Bhd.

The SP Setia statement said the ministry's integrated research complex will be built in Shah Alam and paid for by way of a "land swap for government land measuring 40.22 acres along Jalan Bangsar".

NONE"Maybank Investnment Bank has estimated the value of land obtained by SP Setia to be worth... up to RM1.8 billion," said Pua.

"ECM Libra also estimates the gross development value (of the land) to be around RM8 billion."

The 1NIH project, he added, is a "mirror image" of the RM682 million contract awarded to Naza TTDI to build the Matrade International Convention and Exhibition Centre, which was paid for with land valued at least RM970 million.

"Government losses from (the Matrade and 1NIH projects) come up to RM1.28 billion combined and would have more than offset the 'savings' generated from the most recent rounds of subsidy cuts on essential goods, estimated to be about RM1 billion," he said.

"Cancel project and call open tender'

The DAP parliamentarian said that, what the federal government has done is in contrast to the way the Penang government awarded a RM300 million project to build a convention centre, also won by SP Setia, but through competitive bidding.

In this case, the developer would only be paid RM50 million by the state government, but it would be allowed to recoup its investment through the management and operation of the centre for 30 years.

"We call upon Najib to cancel the (SP Setia) transaction and instead call for an open tender to build the proposed 1NIH.

"The government must conduct an open auction for the prime land in Bangsar, not only to ensure that the rakyat's interests if prioritised, but also to prevent the (reform programmes) from becoming... dead and buried."

A dead chook and many frightened monkeys

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 04:01 AM PST

There is a Chinese saying which states "Kill the chicken to frighten the monkeys". But it seems in the current and deplorable Malaysian political situation, the chicken has now been killed by frightened monkeys.

Malaysiakini's Dead chicken in threat against Serdang MP tells us:

Serdang MP Teo Nie Ching received a death threat this morning, reinforced by a dead chicken hung on the grill door of the DAP Sungai Chua branch office. […]

… the carcass was still hanging where it had been hung. Its throat had been slashed and blood was still dripping …

A poster was stuck to the signboard, with the warning: "Ingat! Ini satu Peringatan Teo Nie Ching, Tentera Jihad" (Take note! This is a reminder Teo Nie Ching, the Jihad Army).

Let's read between the lines, to dive into, discover & discern the real reason for the lamentable Malaysian Mafiaso action [remember that severed horse head in the the film 'Godfather'?].

To kaytee, Teo Nie Ching is one hell of a MP. She is hardworking, dedicated, colour blind and has reached out to every sector of her constituency, very effectively, very successfully. Her Malay constituency has been very responsively warm to her, even inviting her to their aerobics sessions.

Her popularity with her Malay constituency has so worried UMNO that she has been specifically targeted by the UMNO-BN cyber army (and I am not talking about this puerile buggeration of monkeys killing the poor chook).

It's not unlike the recent and unprecedented Utusan barrage of attacks against DAP party in general and Lim Guan Eng in particular. Until recently Utusan and UMNO didn't bother with the DAP. To them, the DAP was a sarp sarp suoi (minor irrelevant) distraction, mainly a MCA's problem - but not so now.

Teo Nie Ching forms the 3rd
of the feared DAP trio. They have done what was hitherto considered by UMNO as impossible. They have penetrated effectively into the Malay constituencies, admittedly only in the urban areas. Perhaps the next giant step for DAP may well be taken into the very 'heartland' - now, won't that truly shake UMNO up.

That has been why they have been relentlessly attacked, week after week. The slaughtered chook is a sign of utter desperation, an indication of the bankruptcy of her opponents. The frightened monkeys are certainly chattering away.

China and the United States Reach Important Crossroads...

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 01:37 AM PST

when the two leaders of the leading largest trading nations meet in Washington today where Hu JinTao is given a red-carpet welcome and President Barack Obama hosts the Chinoserie communist boss to a a rare and rarified dinner at his official residence reserved only for VVIP arrivals.

As you know Desi also arrived at an important cross-roads some two weeks earlier.

This is this knotty blogger's laying his not-so-humble Self to fame by association. If DDC is used, it would be by aRsEsociation, but then ER (EsteemedReaders in my DDC lexicon:( who have below-16 kids peeking in at Midnight Voices would object, so I shalt restrain, and from henceforth, Cease&Desist, words I picked up interacting with TOO MANY LAWYERS WHO LATELY ALSO LAY MUCH CLAIM TO FAME -- positive examples is demigod picking two candidates to stand under PKR and/or DAP banners for GE13. Without an invitation.I am sure Hu did receive an INVITATION from the White House before leaving Beijing!:)

Yes, definitely an Invite. From blue house, or yellow house,or the White House. On the negative side, two brother-lawyers laid more than their 15minutes of media fame in their purported involvement in the slaying of four Malaysians in their posh farm house compound where the victims' bods were chopped up -- like chop-suey? -- and then BB-Queed.

Desi's ground is that having arrived at the crossroads, and after rumination for 17days (or dies if Aussie slang is used as we are constantly reminded for two weeks the massive floodings in Queensland took away many unlucky victims in an act of God, followed by the terror spread southwards into Victoria, still proceeding...) May God protect my many GOoD friends plus a brother migrant and family Down Under...

OK, sorry for the digression -- it's a wandering into less travelled path while the main journey needed a break...Now back to Chino-Americano relations.

The country which only a few months ago beat Japan into second place as lading trading nation in the world has a population of 1.3 to 1.4billion people, which account for one fifth of the world's. Just in sheer numbers alone, that nation's domestic market ensures their country would have a reday market for anything the people produce. Only "Communist" by central command, the country has become one of the most-free markets -- laissaire-fare?, please check the spelling, OK! -- after boss Deng XiaoPing opened up the bamboo-curtained introverted party-cum-nation. And staggerring GDP growth of above 10% every year for the past two decades ensured the US look up to China.

WHY? By sheer basic economic alone -- the US owes the cpommunist-country-in-name only the largest debt, some 40% of its accumulated IOUs; the last I heard US borrowings from China along amounted to more than USD1 trillion.:) OR :( (One trillion for the Ignoramuses here/hear! is ONE, followed by NINE ZEROES!) And Malaysia's budget, let me remind you, is still counted in the double -digit billions, which is one followed by six zeroes! :( OR :)I'm prettyNdemocratoc,I let you choose thy own emotional reaction! (To myself: As if Desi careth...!?)

Besides food on their plates, diplomats in Obama and JinTao will quietly whisper currency woes on US side countered by the guet's promise to look into the matter. The US alleged in public many times the oriental "Jewish" state purposely keeps its reminbu (yuan) low so that its exports would be relatively cheaper than if the RMB/yuan is exchanged at a higher rate with the greemback. )DDC aside: Is dare some green-eyed White monster staring at the communist BackORwhiteKingcat? MaoZedong says it doesn't matter in his communist RedBook whether thir cat is black or white as long as it catches the mice!Desi's knottily adds: whether fed on unpolished white lice or CondoLiaza polished rice:) OR :(

The Chinese leader would whispe back that western institutions like the Norwegian Nobel Prize Awarding Committee --much influenced by the US? -- should not have encouraged "dissent" in the communist people-friendly nation by gifting Liu XiaBau the Peace Prize which the detained recipient could not leave house to receive the award. What "human rights", Mr President, do you want to exchange for in one citizen? Bloodshed by the thousands again at TianANNmen square? ANN in Mandarin means "peace", BTW!

Obama would then draw attention to win-win situations the host-and-guest share besides both havong Asian bloddlines...That China has [aid lots of attention to World Trade Organisation issues like tariffs control, Intellectual Copyrights, and Green technology stress.

One parting word:

Obama: Please understand why we need to print more Greenbacks okay? You also please continue to subscribe to out bonds, OK! (That last world is followed by an exclamation mark, not a question. You guess why...)

JinTao: It;s okay... it's not for us oitsiders to interfere into your domestic life-styles -- if the average American wants to borrow from us Chinese to continue your lavish styles,it's fine by us! As long as you give us the prim, and proper, and prime collaterals? (That last world is followed by a Q but it's what Desi deems a rhetotical question, NO ANSWER NEEDED!)

...as they bowed politely in toasting to both countries' health and well-being.......

May God bless both these leaders they don't talk about nuclear arms and rocket missile deals, and the knotty Koreas and Taiwan issues -- both are NON-issues.

Then we of the rest of the world Homo sapiens can say our prayers, let's have a GOoD night's sleep that next year 2012 won't see what the doomsayers predict: The end of the world is nigh, nigh, rimes with sigh, sigh...

May God -- however you deem Him to be -- BlessUSawe:) Amen. ~~ YL, Desi

China Bosses Ply Staff With Expensive CNY Gifts.

Posted: 19 Jan 2011 12:40 AM PST

Houses, Mercedes Benz cars, diamonds, gold, iPhone and iPad are among the expensive Chinese New Year gifts that employers in China give to their staff, reported Sin Chew Daily.

The paper said many workers in China would be having a prosperous year as their employers are being very generous in their gifts.

It is learnt that renowned Chinese director Zhang Yi Mou would be buying for each of his permanent staff a new house while the producer of Chinese movie Let the Bullets Fly would present each of his staff a Smart Car.

The daily reported that a company in Ningbo had rewarded its top staff with 40 Mercedes Benzs and BMWs.

Many banks, brokerage and real estate companies are giving away more than one million yuan (around RM470,000) to each of their staff, the paper reported. Others, like free overseas holiday packages and boxes of sanitary pads are also in the gift list.

In Zhejiang province, the daily reported that close to 80% of the companies were distributing cash in the equivalent of RM5,000 to RM15,000 to each of their staff.

A total of 64% employees say they will leave their current jobs if their companies do not reward them with gifts or cash before the Chinese New Year, said the paper.

However, in Guangdong province, the reward given out to each employee is an average of RM2,080 and 70% of the employees there did not receive any reward.

I hope no irresponsible or politically motivated people will try to drag me into politics," the Sultan said in a statement on Wednesday.
