Sarawak – a state of independents

Sarawak – a state of independents

Sarawak – a state of independents

By Maclean Patrick

COMMENT It cannot be faulted if we all agree that it is human nature for people to group together within familiar circles. We see this in family units, communities, villages, towns, cities, states, countries and (the obvious) political entities.

It's a comforting effect – to be able to huddle together in a tight unit either for warmth or security. A habit born from prehistoric times since the days the human species branched out to populate the world.

Human beings are herding creatures, much like the rest of nature.

And as Sarawak approaches its state election, we are presented with a tantalising option: which herd will we join?

Direct membership is nothing new to the Barisan Nasional (BN). Yet there should be a caveat as proposed by Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president James Masing.

"Direct BN membership should not be a sanctuary for party dissidents or rejects of any BN component party. If BN accepts those characters, it will create a destabilising precedence and open the floodgates for unruly personalities to come in," he told a local daily.

Rightly so, we do not want to go against Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection. Bad genes in the herd gene-pool would only spell doom for the herd at large. Leave out the dissidents or rejects and all is fine. And BN will be stronger and better, more able to lead the state of Sarawak.

Pakatan Rakyat is not fairing any better, with the Batu Sapi PKR branch calling for Zaid Ibrahim's sacking before his Dec 16 resignation. Another call in line with many, these past few weeks, for Zaid to be punished. Cull the herd of these dangerous characters, less the herd at large strays from its migration to Putrajaya.

Vote for independents

Darwin would give two thumbs-up and a big toe to these turn of events because it validates his findings with finches (a small bird) in the Galapagos Islands.

But let's be honest here. Leave the herds to themselves and ponder for a little while. What does Sarawak have to gain from all these political drama?

Either herd presents its own set of evils, and no matter how much you stomp about, asserting your proposed dominance in the savannah, it is just going to be a mere show of hooves and dust and grunts.

To which, many are suggesting that come the next election, vote for the independents. Make Sarawak a state of independents.

Why not? We do have a right to nominate and vote a candidate of our choice.

Allow me to digress a little and take us back to the basic idea of democracy, all the way to the rule of the Etruscan who came up with the idea of the citizen vote.

Not much is mentioned about the Etruscans, for which we can thank the Romans for wiping out much of the historical records of the Etruscans.

Yet we owe the Etruscans for the birth of Western civilisation and democracy itself. For the Romans did not invent the ideas of democracy; they took the ideas of the Etruscans and created a working model for all of us to copy.

The Etruscans had a form of monarchy-democratic system in place. There was a king yet the people could vote in representatives to sit in a council of sorts.

When the Romans overthrew the Etruscans, they kept the voting and representative system but created a dual leadership system to replace the monarchy, so that no one person had absolute rule over Rome.

The dual leaders both ruled for a set period and made decisions collectively. So no one person exerted total control over government.

The early democratic system was put in place so neither person nor entity had total rule over government.

Fast forward a few hundred years, and we find the Sarawak democratic system much like the early Etruscan system.

We have leaders who believe they are monarchs and the vote of the people is reason enough to lord over the land for as long as they want. And come state election, the people of the land are forced to pick sides because our vote keeps these parties in power.

Lone straggler

There is no place for the herd mentality, so prevalent in today's politics, in a democratic-ruled nation.

Whatever BN or PKR decides, in order to boost their membership or strengthen their herds, the lay person has to think as an individual and decide for themselves; what action would best serve them and their communities.

Even if it means, not voting at all for any herd but to trust the lone independent straggler.

There is talk that come the next election, many would come forward to stand as independents (against Chief Minister Taib Mahmud and his herd).

A unlikely solution but one that seems more in line to the fundamental idea of what a democratic system is like – the people's right to vote for anyone they deem right to lead and represent themselves and their community.

Hairan! Pas Ingat Peristiwa Tapi Buat-buat Lupa Tabung Memali

Posted: 23 Nov 2010 09:53 AM PST

Bekas Ahli Dewan Ulama Pas Pusat, Prof. Madya Mohd.

Mohd Nor Deris seterusnya menambah, Pas perlu telus memberikan penjelasan berhubung tabung berkenaan dan bukannya sekadar mengadakan majlis memperingati peristiwa berkenaan.

"Takkan sekadar buat majlis memperingati pristiwa Memali sahaja.

Jumlah Ahli, PKR Kelentong DAP & Pas

Posted: 23 Nov 2010 09:52 AM PST

-MediaUMNO.

Pakatan Pembangkang Makin Genting, DAP Cuba Berlakon “Hero”

Posted: 23 Nov 2010 09:39 AM PST

Its time to reduce 'political-related' contractors

Posted: 23 Nov 2010 08:24 AM PST

Will the Federal Government engage new contractors to salvage its mega projects in East Malaysia or not is not an issue. The burning question is whether engaging new takers would mean additional budget.

The Transport Ministry yesterday promised to ensure the completion of the runway for Kota Kinabalu International Airport and Tanjung Aru flyover projects following the bankruptcy declaration against its contractor, Tan Sri Dr Ting Pek Khiing.

Dr Ting is Managing Director of Global Upline Sdn Bhd (GUSB) that was awarded the two mega projects in Sabah (here).

It is a normal practice for new contractors to review the BQ, costing and other aspects based on current market price of building materials. Both contracts are already behind schedules.

Ting, 67, the developer of the Bakun Hydroelectric Project via Ekran Berhad, of which he is Executive Chairman, was declared a bankrupt after he withdrew his application for the bankruptcy order not to be enforced on him on Nov. 12.

Ting's bankruptcy declaration follows a legal suit initiated in 2004 after he defaulted on a loan by Bank of Commerce Bhd. That loan was to part-finance his subscription of shares under Ekran's rights issue in 1997. As at July 2005, Ting owed some RM60.79 million to the bank.

And what will happen to Bakun?

Our government has got this habit of awarding mega projects to 'selected' contractors. They are the big brothers of the industry. Over the last 20 years, few big names were awarded 'out of tender' to carry out important projects, and some had faltered.

I am not sure. Is the government still skeptical in trying out the new and upcoming players? While we chant the 'level playing field' slogan, we dont really put them to test. It doesnt mean the big players do not have problems.

In fact, some new players are much better as they, too want to get fast recognition from the government.

Over the years, the big chunks of contracts are given out to the same names like MMC, Gamuda, YTL, UEM and others. During the 80s, Renong and Landmark were the heroes but what happened to them now?

I think its time to spread our choice and selection. If we fail to try out the new players, we wouldnt know their strength and ability, thus depriving them the equal rights to compete. And if we keep on depending on those 'political-related' conglomerates, we would be frustrated should they fail.

Please la, bos! Orang lain pun nak cari makan jugak.

If we keep on looking for the best in life, we may end up getting nothing...

DAP suffers from Tourette’s Syndrome

By Hartal MSM

If you'll trawl this blog, you can find a number of postings critical of MCA, including recent ones. These are mostly in the context of its ownership of the Star and the radio station that sacked DJ Jamaluddin.

Yet throughout our longstanding criticisms of MCA, never has the party's cybertroopers come in to say that Hartal is an agent or agency of the 'enemy' for what we've written against them (MCA). However, when we criticise DAP, the comments from the party cadres are insinuating and accusatory.

One 'cyber thug' (to use Helen Ang's description of the DAP mob dragging Malaysian political culture into the gutter) is the character assassin calling himself Ah Hoe. He's pursuing a personal vendetta against Helen in Malaysiakini but in the process his comments (droppings which are like birdshit all over the place) attempt to implicate Hartal.

If you'll see the screenshots below, he copypasted the same comment again and again, from the droppings he left in her column, and replicated in letters to the editor totally unrelated to Helen. What Ah Hoe did is called 'spamming' (besides THUGGERY).

According to Malaysiakini policy, "Comments that include profanity, personal attacks, and antisocial behaviour such as 'spamming' and 'trolling' will be removed." One of Ah Hoe's comments was either removed by the Malaysiakini moderator or deleted by Ah Hoe himself (we suspect the latter).

Nonetheless we caught it on screenshot before its removal. Ah Hoe attacked Helen by putting his comment in a letter to the editor by Chuah Siew Eng titled 'Media bias no excuse for Kedah gov't press ban' — which is totally unrelated to Helen.

Belligerent North Korea ups the ante

Posted: 23 Nov 2010 04:45 AM PST

Earlier this year, the North Koreans sank a South Korean naval vessel by torpedo, killing 46 South Korean sailors. And just days ago, they revealed a massive new uranium enrichment plant to the world, which pleased no one (except North Korea's ally Iran of course).

Now the starving, cash strapped Norks have upped the ante, by firing artillery on both military and civilian targets in South Korea earlier today.

At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island in the Yellow Sea after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time … South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire.

At least two died in South Korea, along with a number of injuries and substantial property damage on the South Korean-owned island. Quite predictably, the Norks are blaming South Korea for everything.

The Norks got away with an act of war by sinking the Cheonan, and not surprisingly, they've just committed another act of naked aggression. The only sensible response now for the politicians on the other side (US, RoK and Japan) is to respond with overwhelming force.

But with Hillary and Obama in charge, all we can reasonably expect is another strongly worded letter, followed by appeals to a useless UN for 'stern action'.  What rubbish.  China will appeal for 'restraint' while leaving their bellicose ally entirely blameless.  The aggressor will go unpunished yet again.

Wherever one looks, there is a scam. The central government, the state governments, and it has nothing to do with the political affiliations. All are equally culpable. Worse, even the pillars of the society one normally associates with strength of character – the judiciary, the defence services and the media – are getting discredited in the most embarrassing manner.
I can't remember the nation ever in this sort of state as it finds itself now. Seems absolutely none has a stake in its growth and development and all that almost anybody who has been entrusted with some power to do some 'good' is only doing good for himself. It is open loot across all walks of our society.
Everybody doles out platitudes by the hour about how great we are, how great our democracy is, what all we have given to the world, and while the gullible lap all that up and get lulled into a false sense of security, those doling out all this junk make merry. These guys are bleeding this nation dry.
Do you realise how quickly we have been overcome with scams? The commonwealth games seemed to be a scam of unprecedented proportions. Suddenly, it got overshadowed by the Adarsh society scam, and just as it unseated a chief minister, came the 2G scam that unseated a central minister. And barely had the dust died down, the Supreme Court chose to question the Prime Minister and the government over the silence over 2G scam and the appointment of the CVC respectively. In between the Karnataka government is paralysed due to corruption and nepotism charges against its chief minister, who refuses to listen to his party high command, saying he has done less than the previous chief ministers. "How can you remove me before I have had my fill?" he seems to be telling his party bosses as he defies their order. Such are the levels to which we have fallen.
All this is nauseating for all those who believe in their nation and its ability to deliver for its people. Fortunately, those who believe in themselves and the nation, in a more practical manner, are still around and they are the ones who are making the little difference.
Back to the spat between the SC and the AG, isn't it high time a better and cleaner system is devised to select those who head positions that directly impact the common man. There is so much confusion and secrecy in their appointment. Why so? Why shouldn't the public know, for example, who the police commissioner in their area will be, say six months ahead of time, so that they can point out anything against the candidate that may have otherwise gone unnoticed?
"India Rejuvenation Initiative", started by former retired judges and bureaucrats and academicians has made some interesting suggestions in this regard (will do a subsequent post on their suggestions later). One may question why they chose to keep quiet while they held high offices. Sure. But look at the positive. If these gents pass the test of 'impeccable integrity', with their inside-out knowledge of the system and its flaws and loopholes, there cannot be anyone better than them to suggest measures that are practical. We really need these practical measures. It needed an insider in Lanka to disclose the secret for Ram to vanquish Ravana. These retired judges and bureaucrats can be looked upon as that.
We really need some out of the box thinking and approach to arrest the rapid downfall we are witnessing in our public life. We surely don't want to see another instance of the executive and the judiciary sparring at the top, resorting to blackmails. We are almost at a point of no return, but if there are opportunities that show the light at the end of the tunnel, let us grab them with both hands.
