Singapore tightens one more screw

Singapore tightens one more screw

Singapore tightens one more screw

By Maxwell Coopers

COMMENT Singapore in a new move is going all out to make it as costly as possible for kidnappers and hostage takers. In a legislation passed last Monday, the country's widely-circulated newspaper, the Straits Times, called the enactment of the new law as "(giving) effect to a United Nations convention against terrorism".

For a country that recently was the target of a terror bomb plot inspired in Indonesia by militant clerics, it does therefore make for plenty of reason to justify why it may need such a law.

After all, it is a global metropolis. Hordes of business clusters dot its marketplace. And so too, are the many government and international organisations which have based their operations in the island-republic.

Hence, it did not take long to make sure the city-state retains its allure.  And perhaps accordingly with its fortress-like security preparedness, it told the world how little stomach it has for hostage takers!

The new law immediately imposes the death penalty on hostage takers of either a government official or an international governmental organisation. And if the offence is committed against any other person, the offender can be jailed for up to 15 years.

Strangely there was no mention either in local papers or over Internet chat lines why it was imposing, of all things, the death penalty when the victim is a government official!

Hardline attitude

There is no doubt that when matters such as this grave stare down the Singapore state, the republic always resorts to what it knows best: give the problem a good whipping and send it packing.

It is too soon, however, to consider the legal, ethical and moral implications that now warrants the death penalty for yet another new classification of offences.

And just as interestingly, the new law makes it permissible for offenders to be prosecuted and extradited to Singapore for offences committed outside Singapore's boundaries.

What all these amounts to, is an unprecedented sweep of "extra-territoriality" though that may be purely an academic exercise in legalese.

Yet there is no denying of the practical challenges that may soon follow suit once implementation is adopted.

There was no discussion as to what prompted this sudden hardline attitude.

Singapore has not had any major kidnapping incidents on its mainland for as long as living memory could possibly arrive at.

High stakes

The only time when something of that sort ever did happen was late last year when one of the nation's vessels, a container ship named Kota Wajar, belonging to shipping firm PIL, was hijacked and is crew commandeered.

That then proved a Catch-22 sort of situation for the nation's operators.

Authorities were neither able to mount a French-style rescue mission nor undertake any kind of acts that would have resolved (the issue) in blood and thunder synonymous with nations exhibiting a healthy dislike for such kinds of criminality.

They were also constrained by the very law they themselves had instituted. And that concerns the Kidnapping Act 1998, which expressly prohibits ransom payouts as it may otherwise encourage kidnappings.

Yet there is no denying that, given the recent exposure of a military servicemen's quest to join the ranks of the al-Qaeda terrorist group coupled with revelations that terrorist groups planned to bomb a train station, there conceivably is every reason to justify, stemming from those news, that attitude of not wanting to brook criminal activity of any kind must be met with the severest of penalties.

All said there should no faulting Singapore authorities.

It has high stakes riding on their back and one of them is to keep the country continually safe for all and sundry.

And nowhere was proven to such tantalising effect than in the recent Gallop poll commissioned in the United States which identified the city-state's public record on safety as being the main draw for the world's immigrants.

Hukum berburuk sangka terhadap sesama Islam

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 06:46 AM PDT

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Engkau Sahaja Lah Maha Pembalas!

Maka tunjukkan lah KekuasaaanMu Ya Rabb!!!

Nurul Izzah Anwar: Anak Harus Mandiri

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 03:53 AM PDT

Kamis, 5/8/2010 | 17:56 WIB

'1 Muted Malaysia' flash mob a muted affair

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 03:09 AM PDT

Activists protesting what they claim is the government's long-standing and iron-fisted control over the media has gathered at the Suria KLCC mall in the nation's capital to express their displeasure through a little civil disobedience. Sadly scarcely a dozen protestors turned up despite the hype surrounding their much anticipated 'mobbing' of the national landmark. This is the third press freedom flash mob to hit KLCC, this time triggered by the recent 'silencing' of three popular Chinese radio station 98.8FM talk show hosts. Wawancara Khusus Tempo dengan Nurul Izzah, Anak Tokoh Oposisi Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim.

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 03:34 AM PDT

KAMIS, 05 AGUSTUS 2010 | 14:30 WIB

Apa pernah berpikir ayah Anda seorang biseksual?

Soal kasus Anwar, Anda merasa nyaman berpolitik?

Tapi Anda bertekad berpolitik selamanya?

Jadi Anda siap menghadapi risiko apa pun?

Kelantan Gold and Silver Dinar ~ Mahaguru58 supports it!

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 02:41 AM PDT

'Gold rush' in Kelantan as dinar goes on sale

KOTA BHARU, Aug 20: When was the last time gold sold like hot cakes in Malaysia?

In spite of the relentless attacks by Barisan Nasional over the PAS state government's move to introduce gold currency in Kelantan as an alternative to the barter trade system, there has been a rush to acquire the new coin which comes in several denominations and subject to the current price of gold.

The gold dinar and silver dirhams went on sale Wednesday, with national news agency Bernama reporting that Kelantanese were 'storming' into Islamic pawn shops Ar-Rahn, the authorized representative for dinar and dirham.

However, some buyers were reportedly sticking to the only thing they had known about gold's usage - as personal ornament.

Following Kelantan's announcement that the gold dinar will be made legal tender, Deputy Finance minister Awang Adek Hussin slammed the PAS-led state government for trying to introduce its own currency, and warned that currency matters came under the purview of the Federal government and Bank Negara Malaysia.

Denying Awang Adek's claim, state economic planning, finance and welfare committee chairman Husam Musa said the dinar was meant to be an alternative in the barter trade system only.

"I do not see why this issue has to be blown up following Kelantan introducing the use of the dinar, as it has been around since the beginning of Islam," said Husam.

Operating manager of Ar-Rahn, Siti Azian Ibrahim, said a total of 344 pieces of dirham and 50 pieces of dinar were opened for sale yesterday.

"Looking at the situation, at the beginning we did not expect the dinar will be well received as many who disagreed with its usage in everyday business," she said.

"But on the first day of sale at Ar-Rahn, the people are showing intense interest to buy it," she said, adding that most customers said they wanted to make the dinar into personal jewellery.

High grade gold

Five types of dinar were on sale at different prices based on the current value of gold in the market.

At press time, half-a-dinar cost RM296, one dinar at RM592, two pieces at RM1,184, five dinars RM 2,960 and 8 dinars at RM 4,736.

The silver dirham sold at RM13, two dirhams at RM26, five dirhams RM65, ten dirhams RM130 and 20 dirhams at RM260.

Siti Azian added that the dinar was produced using high grade of gold normally used for jewellery, adding that buying gold had always been a trend in Kelantan due to its stable market value.

Those interested to acquire the dinar may get more information at or from Ar-Rahn outlets.
It was reported earlier in Sinar Harian that 1000 business/shopping outlets in Kota Bharu have agreed to accept dinar and dirham in their businesses. That's interesting. And I am planning to get a dinar and a dirham for my personal use. I'd like to experience the gold currency.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

I am not an economist or an expert in the world of finance but deep down in my heart, I am all for the introduction of the gold dinar and silver dirham back into our trading systems.

What the Kelantan State Government has done by reintroducing the gold dinar and silver dirham into our daily lives is something that any self respecting Muslim will definitely support to the best of his or her abilities?

We have all heard of how countries of the world such as the USA are flooding the market with their currencies not backed by the equal worth of gold in the Federal Reserves or those of the World Bank!

I don't need to go into the nitty gritties of such scams but I state herewith my total support for the gold dinar and silver dirham to be our preferred currencies.

Paper money is a kuffar's invention. Let's support the Kelantan Gold Dinar and Silver Dirham!

This is the only real money!

The descendant of Kit Siang and Ngeh were granted citizenship after Independence now they want to be Sultan and Agong!

The Chauvinist DAP Chinese would not rest in peace until a Chines opposition member were to become a Sultan or an Agong!!

Although I have not seen the movie and I am sure it is about misconception of being a Muslim or a name sounding like Muslim or Arab.
Shah Rukh Khan was acting in this movie "My name is Khan" and on how this man went to Washington and was mistaken for being a terrorist just because of his name.
Well yeah! If you are an American of an Arab-descent with a "Muslim-sounding name" do not criticised the US government terribly hard or just your luck one night some one from the Homeland Security will come and pick you up and detained you under the homeland security ordnance.
As it is now Muslim-American are now living in fear in the US, the land of the free where freedom of expression is the fundamental way of life there, among other things.
The controversy over the building a multi-purpose Muslim centre where a prayer room is also provided has already gone awry. The thing is it is not even at ground zero but away from it and in spite of this fact racist white American political leaders such as Newt Gingrich are already whipping up the jingoistic anti-Muslim fervor that is now dividing Americans.
The Muslim-multi purpose is for everyone not only Muslim. So why the brouhaha and uproar?! Just plain anti-Muslim persons sentiment, I am sad.
Back to us the same thing is happening. The chauvinist Chinese led by Kit Siang and his just as his chauvinist Bai cohort has been going around making people believe that Malays are a bunch of racist. No sir I shall not keep my mouth shut if you think by voicing our our Malay rights that we are now considered as racist so be it.
The sad fact is even some Malays believe in the lies concocted by Kit Siang and his cohorts
You Chauvinist non-Malay opposition poetical leaders you cannot make us believe that by uttering our Malay right in public or otherwise that we are considered racist?? no sir!
We are not going to fall into the trap as one set by the American administration that Muslim-American had better keep their mouth shut about their rights as American to voice their objections just like any other American, and their rights to condemn a bad US administration or otherwise be labeled a terrorist.
As for you Malays out there do not fall into the same trap laid by these Chauvinist non-Malay politician from the opposition into making us Malay believe that if we voice out our concern over our infringed Malay rights that we are racists?!
The way it is now, no Malays dare to come out to condemn the opposition for showing their disrespect to the Malays rulers and the King, for fear of being labeled a Malay racist, don't be a moron you Melayu bodoh express yourselves this is your country!

This is latest version of the knotty poem after some modification/amendment just like you are aloud/allowed while romping playing bedminton, Malaysian judicial officers' most popular sport. I hear when NegaraKu is qualified to hold the Olympics, this sport will be included in recognition of "Malaysia having arrived".~~ Desi, knottyaSsusua

That 4-letter Word in Verse
as long as man breathes

worst of the lusts lasts
hangs precariously under
is for the perennial powerful energy

S - E - X

when a man, or woman,
would even abandon friends of long lasting years

for the ecstasy of his best friend's mate
running bed or bad

it's all in a game, well said
but Adam fell for a dame
that Eve was well laid

and thereafter
the golden Apple has caused
many men to lose their heads

all over an orifice

where the sun also never shone
but never clearer than the truth

many a man's, and a woman's
is stolen
in broad daylight
day and night
quite a sight
when Power piles atop on
a lesser power, wow
to RPK's delight

that four-letter killer
yet a filler
in a man's national service
or private journey
into the epic centre of
his ecstasy
or someone else's agony

our courtly treasury
is well blessed
to have such sentinel
safeguarding our chest
virtuous national service
or out
of the chamber
steal a winner

bless to the giver and Taker
they deserve each other
luster, lusted
heaven or hell

The Malays In Critical Dilemma Again

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 01:10 AM PDT

Caught midstream in geopolitical turbulence a mile wide with the South-Asian war on the right bank and on the left the Koreas on the boil, Malays in Malaysia may wish they can keep looking straight to avoid having to decide which way they have to go. But they must decide, and fast. Time is running out on them.

There is no middle ground left in the surge of asymmetrical terror in the Clash of Civilizations.

Our old friend in Cuba, Comrade Fidel Castro, has been saying since his recovery from bad health that the war is now verging on the ultimate nuclear holocaust. He may be right.

While the Man of Peace, Barrack Hussein Obama, preside over that civilization clash from the White House, India and Pakistan, both reluctant allies of the US (purposed mainly for the Containment of China), have applied to become members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) that started out with Russia, China and five of the Central Asian countries.

As India sets aside US2 billion to reopen the Ledo Road built during WW II to reach Kun Ming through Myanmar, Pakistan and China have agreed in principle to extend the Korakoram road into a highway that will run through the Northwest Frontier into Baluchistan and then through Sindh to the new port on the shore of the Indian Ocean.

China has also told Afghanistan she is ready to build a railway connection from Kandahar to the same port in Sindh.

Iran, meantime, after successfully leading the ECO countries in building the rail connection between Islamabad and Istanbul, has committed US3 billion to build a railway from Herat to Mazar-i-Sharif in Afghanistan.

After the US has sent back Afghanistan to the Stone Age and that once wondrous country has become the world's largest producer of opium to stay alive, the great hegemonic power slapped the much-disliked Kerry Lugar aid-trap on Pakistan, giving the US virtually all authority to micro-manage Pakistan in exchange for the paltry USD7.5 billion spread through five years.

Pakistan has since become a death-trap and thoroughly a failed-state, now fearing the US will demand her small arsenal of nuclear bombs and render her defenseless in the South-Asian territorial conflict. To make matters worse, she is currently flooded with 14 million of her people badly affected.

Against the American war, Chinese outfits have been building quality roads in Central Asia and have begun to take electricity from there to eventually reach Turkey, for industry.

Kashgar, the Old Silk Road largest bazaar on the Tajik-Xinjiang border will soon be rebuilt into a modern city with giant trading and shopping malls, with roads leading out to Tajikistan, Kyrgystan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan and to the Korakorum and to the heart of China.

The contrast between the US and China-Russia with the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) is a simple contrast of War and Peace, leaving Obama, the Friend of Peace, on the side of War – a good man living with bad josh and evil karma, yeah.

That's about the right bank of the Malay world, in a nutshell. Just as border tensions become unnaturally and unnecessarily high between India and China, the world was edged into frantic tensions on the left bank over the two Koreas, the tensions reaching straight to the Spratlys, the Straits of Malacca, the whole of the China Sea and its neighborhood and stretching the Pacific into a grasp of heat.

In short, the turbulence on the left and right banks of the Malay World translates into World War.

While in the development even Sri Lanka has turned towards the peace-bearing SCO (and ECO), Malaysia, which had spearheaded the move to set-up our own East-Asian Caucus (involving ASEAN, China, Korea and Japan) has now virtually retracted that East Asian peace initiative.

EAC would have given Asean and her partners the leverages needed to return the tension-filled Containment of China back into negotiable conduct of trade, development and cultural exchanges.

It would have also given the chance for Asean countries to redistribute Asean trade which has been hogged by Singapore, the island republic taking the lion's share o about 65 percent from the start.

Malaysia was en-route to leading the pack of 10 to reform the trade and economic profiles of our regional bloc when the previous to the previous premier led himself into a hilarious power skirmish with his nemesis, Anwar Ibrahim, making them both losers. It was ostensibly about sodomy.

Now, with the US-Vietnam nuclear agreement causing the scenario to totally change, the Malays, as they are led by Umno, are quite apparently in a state of bewilderment and not knowing on which side of the Malay River (Sungai Melayu) will the harvests become gold, and which will be fire.

Because around 30 percent of Malaysia is Chinese and the Chinese have been more economically successful in Malaysia (as well as in all Asean), it seems safe to say Malays in Malaysia are generally scared the Chinese would run them aground politically, sooner or later.

But how can the Chinese do that if the Malays do not sell off their birthrights this writer hasn't been able to grasp since the beginning of time.

In other words, that fear seems to be seated on the self-assumption the Malays are corrupt, are naturally corruptible and will sell off their birthrights for a fee and bits of flesh, like it had been in Palembang and Jambe, the Malay heartland.

Some Malays appear to have been gripped by US propaganda that has made China into a US archrival now that the Muslims have been reduced into intra-Islam anarchy of sects (and sexes).

China, on the other hand, is the third country in Space and has modernized her arsenal to include ICBMs with cluster-nuclear warheads. But the US may be able to blow these with her anti-missile lasers.

The meaning is this: China is still decades away from becoming a contestant for hegemony or even for hemispheric imperialism.

China is, instead, a very successful vendor of intercontinental trade, diplomacy and development.

The same as with Iran, which the US and Zionists want us to believe is well on the way to becoming a regional power wishing to nuke Israel, China too is being made into a bogey by the US.

Some Malays enjoy this fear-the-Chinese syndrome. It had been a Malay trait from before WW II and dubbed in history as the Great Fear, becoming the motive force of the efficient anti-Chinese movement in 1944-46.

Truth is, China has just moved into a GDP of US5 trillion. Because the Japanese GDP had shrunk a bit, China may have become statistically the second largest economy in the world.

But that is US5 trillion in a country of 1.3 billion. It makes the Chinese urban per capita income only about RM5,000 and with about RM1,500 for the rural. Take note the numbers are in RM, not USD.

That is, indeed, a great leap for what had been an abject poverty-clutch only three decades before. But China would need time to use domestic consumer spending to boost her economy. She will be export-dependent for a long while yet.

This means, unless she reverts to the old style of command economy, she is not about to become imperial.

Militarily, while she has a huge infantry and a remarkably fast-expanding modern air force, she is merely in the process of building her first two aircraft-carriers to contest the mighty US Pacific Fleet.

Hence, the danger China poses to us is more in her cheap goods than in her military might. She is a US embarrassment because of the US1.8 trillion America owes to the Bank of China rather than for being militarily a contestant.

Because the US and Britain/Europe have all the time been technology-stingy, more and more countries in the world have been looking to China and Russia for technology-transfer and for state-of-the-art aircrafts and weaponry.

The US sold us (Malaysia) F-fighter jets without giving us the code to open the bomb-hatch! Will they give us the code if Anwar Ibrahim becomes the Malaysia Prime Minister? Is there any guarantee forthcoming from the Pentagon or from the Whitey House?

The Chinese isn't much of a threat. Chinese in Malaysia can become difficult if they were to smuggle into the country something like three million persons from the Chinese mainland into the recently constructed economic corridors.

Short of that kind of a stunning human smuggling racket, the Chinese in Malaysia are at worst merely a case of bad breath, and at best, a vibrant commercial and industrial community that can become astounding with the right opportunities and the right mannerisms.

This is to say in the Sino-Malay periodical effervescences, it is the Malays that have been at fault.

Corruption-prone, they have been quick to swerve into banshee-screaming to extend the tenure of the super-privileged gotten-rich-quick class of Malay princes, politicians, contractors and businessmen, the Malay Labor left out and instead, made to pay for the costs of the hubris and debauchery. Malaysia is now on the edge of bankruptcy.

Hardly anything has gone into the way of Labor under the leadership of Najib Tun Razak who is hosting the High Income Economy, ensuring his father, The Great Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, is now truly dead.

Hardly anything worth redeeming has been heard of a Social Policy in Najib's New Economic Model (NEM), him busy wooing Chinese and Indian voters who probably will continue to vote against the Barisan Nasional (BN), anyway.

The Malays are in critical dilemma once again for the lack of an ideological guidance other than an absurdly distorted Islam,

One Malaysia must need an ideology that can offer Malaysians a way out of the ethnic and sectarian conflicts or it will merely be a political posture worth no more than a lollipop that will melt under the sun.

The Malays have no place to rally around. This is an industrial society and it is senseless to believe Malays can anymore stand together around fundamental Islam or around the pool of the super-privileged nationalist elite that has gone berserk in corrupt practices and in arrogance.

Going back to Labor in Co-production is possibly the only way there is.-- a. ghani ismail, 22 August, 2010

Scrap Lahad Datu's coal-fired plant!

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 03:23 AM PDT

A posting by Rockybru on Friday, Aug 20 about the billion ringgit coal-fired plant in Lahad Datu near Sandakan, Sabah draws my attention. And taking the Q from him, I would like to add a few lines (or facts) about it.

I wonder whether Che Khalib Mohamad Noh is still one of the directors of Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd who was also responsible in 'approving' the project. And, is his buddy at Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Abdul Razak Majid still holding similar SEB directorship? (here)

If so, both can give a lengthy asnwer to the progress of the coal-fired plant, which was met with criticism not only from people in Lahad Datu and Sandakan but NGOs and environmentalists alike. And the rumors that it was meant as a 'parting gift' for Pak Lah and his friends (who could they be?) has opened up questions to possibility - that it was a syndicated political project.

However, I dont want to go into its depth. What concerns me and many is the fact that the EIA reports was in favor of such a plant, which has been banned in many countries like most in Europe for its devastating air pollution impact.

What went wrong at the EIA agency? Who got the order to tamper with its originally 'obstructing contents' and gave it a 'clear' for the construction of the plant? If nobody wants to answer this, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak will have no choice but to set up an inquiry on it.

Something was not right with the site report, either. It was originally proposed some 10km from the shore but it was then agreed that it must be built by the sea as it would accommodate the setting up of a port for ships ferrying coals.

Another burning issue is that, the Bakun Dam project which is expected to be completed in 2011 should be able to supply enough energy to the needs of Lahad Datu and Sandakan.

The argument is simple - the government, via TNB, plans a 676km submarine cables across the South China Sea to connect Bakun and Peninsular Malaysia, when in fact the distance from Miri to Sandakan is only 480km. Besides, the idea to sell Bakun's electricity to Brunei and Kalimantan has to be reconsidered. Why cant we sell it to the people and industry in Sabah and Sarawak first instead of providing it to other countries?

Maybe we could also consider the summary of the EIA reports here and comments by those who have read it.

Transportation via marine vessels will generate waste oils and bilge water. If not properly managed and disposed, these will lead to pollution of marine waters. Piling and trenching activities will increase the turbidity in the construction and adjacent area. According to the hydraulic modelling results, the suspended sediment concentrations in excess of 50mg/l in the worst case scenario (during the North East Monsoon) are limited to only within about 150m from the piling and trenching sites (on both sides).

I am not an expert. Maybe Rocky and the rest of you can understand it. But my summary is simple: stop the plan, fully-utilise Bakun's supply and leave Lahad Datu's shores clean and healthy. To those who wanted to benefit from the project, you are doomed!

Tulang Besi: The Victim of “American” Discrimination

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 11:29 PM PDT

Not long ago, Tulang Besi applied for a position in United States. Despite being told by the agent that Tulang Besi has a great chance of getting the job due to the fact that Tulang Besi is an alumni of an American University and has a fully functional social security number registered with the American government.

Several months had passed, yet no answer from my agent in the US. Finally, after checking with a few sources, Tulang Besi concludes that Tulang Besi is rejected outright. And, the main reason for the rejection is because Tulang Besi's real name starts with Abdul (Abdul Rahman Abdul Talib).

If only Tulang Besi had submitted a resume without mentioning the "Abdul", the application would have been accepted.

Tulang Besi's brother lives in the UK. When he first arrived, he submitted his resume various agents. Several weeks had passed yet none replied.
Tulang Besi's brother, then, decided to rewrite his resume. This time, he omitted the word Muhammad from his name. He then sent out his resume to the same agencies.

Within hours after sending the new resume, Tulang Besi's brother was bombarded with tens of requests for interviews or inquiries.

It goes to show, the American effort to compartmentalize Muslims and to jump-start a massive discrimination effort towards Muslims is working.
Now, Muslims having Muslim names that starts with "Abdul" or Muhammad are natural targets for discrimination. We are not worthy of any rights guaranteed in the Western world.

Another good example is the French's obsession with Purdah or Burqa. They went out of their way to ban Purdah and Hijab in their schools.
Yet, they provide protection to a film director name Roman Polanski from facing charges of child molestations in the US. They even appointed a minister who openly admits to have had sex with boys in Thailand.

The message sent out is: Religious clothing is an abomination. Raping children is an unalienable right

Thus far, we have never seen any evidence linking Osama and Al Qaeda with the September 11 bombings. Most of the American information is obtained from prisoners who underwent torture in Guantanamo Bay or various Central Asia republics.

It is a known fact that most men will confess anything under torture even to the extent of claiming oneself to be a woman. I know in Egypt, they will torture a political prisoner until he admits that he is a woman/girl. Only then, the political prisoner is released.

So, most of the information we read about the so call "Terror Network" are obtained from detainees confessions who had undergone the process of torture.
At the same time, people like me will have to undergo systematic discrimination whenever I enter the realm of the West.

In the West, Muslims are the cursed people and people who put Muhammad or Abdul in their names are automatic extremists and must be abolished from the face of the earth. Unless of course, if people like me is willing to come out in public that I am a child molester or someone who likes having sex with boys. Then, I can be assured of the protection of the West.

'Better late than never' or 'better never than late'

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 11:35 AM PDT

Parti ini perlu perubahan dari A to Z..

Salah siapa? Introspeksilah diri sendiri.

Pilih diantara 2 'proverb ini; 'better late than never' atau 'better never than late'.

'Tis the nature of the beast

Malaysiakini - MCA's Chua changes tune on bumi equity issue.

Hardly surprising to read of Chua Soi Lek backing down from his earlier call for the 30% bumi equity to be gradually removed - which actually had been a right call. But alas, as they say, it's in the nature of the beast, where the MCA beast is that of a lap dog called to heel and swiftly obeying.

I have always believed in affirmative action to lend a hand to the weak and less fortunate, to take them along with us down the road towards a better life. But it should be based on a 'needs basis', to be determined by a number of criteria including asset testing.

It's terrible that one should only benefit from favoured treatment on the basis of skin colour rather that of needs.

The recent call by Tony Pua for the abolishing of the housing discount for Malays for purchases of residence above a price tag of RM500,000 was an excellent example of indirect 'asset testing'. If a Malay can afford a house of above RM500,000 why the hell should he or she require a discount other than by the sick argument that he/she has the correct kulit-fication (skin colour).

The discount is meant to enable poorer Malays to be able to afford and acquire housing and a fair examination of Tony Pua's call will show clearly his proposal didn't extend right down to the less costly houses. In other words, Malays purchasing houses of not more than RM500,000 will continue to enjoy the legislated discount.

But trust UMNO to ignore this fact and attack Pua for wanting to do away with the policy of housing discount for Malays completely. Talking about the nature of the beast, the UMNO one has this modus operandi, that of telling deliberate lies designed to either frighten or anger the heartland against political competitors, who could actually represent the Malays more sincerely, effectively and respectivefully without treating them like convenient political tools to be used when needed and discarded when not - picture the FELDA settlers.

A fair and colour-blind affirmative action will still ensure the less fortunate Malay would deservedly receive assistance and support from the government to ensure they may better their lives. And the fewer but equally impoverished Indians and to a lesser extent, Chinese, will similarly enjoy the 'needs basis' government support.

The non asset-tested 30% equity is nothing more than an open cheque for the UMNO elite to plunder the nation's wealth while the poor Malays in the heartland continue to be poor, and then be told lies that their poverty has been due to the avaricious rapacious Chinamen.

By his cowardly belakang pusing, Chua Soi Lek has shown the real character of MCA, namely its eternal subordination and cringe to UMNO, which has long being despised by the Chinese community - recall the paltry 9% Chinese support for Chua as a community leader.

Chua made even worse the adverse impression of his back down by his sycophantic crooning to the PM. MKINI reported: Chua said the party thanked the prime minister for the advice, which he said was in line with the BN's vast experience in dealing with issues of common interest.

Indeed the so-called 'BN's vast experience in dealing with issues of common interest' has always been consistent in: U Must Not Object to its policy, whims and fancies, in this case to the 30% bumi equity, even if it's well known that some bumis will immediately sell off the equity (shares etc) the moment they have been handed that.

The elitist and self-interest rule of UMNO, abetted by its subordinate cronies like MCA and MIC, has been made more apparent by the example of the current Penang State government which has taken pains to be thrifty and more efficient so that some of the savings could be translated into financial subsistence for the more senior citizens (of all ethnic groups) to enjoy, and recently, also to the Muslim state civil servants as special Raya bonuses to ameliorate their Raya expenses in these hard times.

No doubt the last action must have driven UMNO mad with jealousy and worries about a DAP-Pakatan government becoming more and more acceptable to the Malay community that they have launched into an insidious campaign to demon-ize Lim Guan Eng in the eyes of the Malays, using lies about untoward mosque sermons involving Lim.

It shows that UMNO is so desperately bankrupt with policy ideas that once again it has resorted to religio-racist bigotry, using its sinister formulaic mantra of raja, agama dan bangsa against Lim. 'Tis the nature of the beast.

And sadly PM Najib, for all his 1Malaysia talk, has subscribed to the evil campaign by calling for an investigation into allegations fabrications that mosque sermons in Penang had replaced the Agong's name with that of Lim Guan Eng.
