COMMENT Tiger in A'Famosa Resort exploited for commercial gain. Two women from Madagascar arrested at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) for smuggling more than 400 pieces of rare species from the island state off mainland Africa. An apparent criminal syndicate was busted with not only stolen cars but scores of protected birds and other mammals in a warehouse in the capital city.
These are very likely, pardon the cliché, the tip of the iceberg of the extent of wildlife abuse and trafficking in this country that constantly boasts of being one of the 12 mega biodiversity centres in the world.
And they all have one thing in common – they were not exposed by the Department of Wildlife and National Park (Perhilitan).
The exploit of A'Famosa was filmed by a young girl who was disgusted with the state of abuse the majestic cat was subjected to in a profit-driven outlet capitalising on the draw of the animal in the lunar calendar year of the tiger, no less.
The KLIA seizure was carried out by the Customs Department while the "mini zoo" discovery was purely accidental and opportunistic, piggy-backing on a police raid.
Sure, Perhilitan has some successful enforcement cases that it announced now and then through press conferences. And in no way am I belittling the efforts of its Wildlife Crime Unit.
However, seizure is one thing and bringing the matter to justice is another. Unfortunately, the latter is sorely lacking.
Take the case of A'Famosa. Perhilitan said it is awaiting a statement from the videographer or whoever that posted the clip on popular video-sharing site YouTube before handing the investigation paper to the Attorney-General's Chambers.
Sound fair enough. Let's just hope that it won't be conveniently forgotten once the hype is gone.
Prior to the outcry generated by this YouTube posting that culminated in a protest outside the resort supported by local showbiz celebrities Rina Omar and Bernie Chan in late May, the same resort had also been criticised for capitalising on the species which is the animal in the Chinese zodiac for the 2010 lunar new year.
The YouTube video was evidence of such activities during the Chinese New Year judging from the background music.
At the same time, Saleng Zoo had also jumped on the bandwagon of the "roaring business". It even ran a "tiger-for-loan" scheme for corporation or just anyone who is willing to pay a few thousands ringgit to temporarily "own" a cub for a few hours to do whatever with it as they pleased.
The zoo near Kulai, Johor, has been involved in a controversial tiger-breeding programme where the mortality rate of tiger cubs was high as well as being implicated in supplying cubs to other aspiring zoos and individual collectors; an activity that is not covered by its Special Permit as far as public knowledge is concerned.
But the zoo is unperturbed – it never fails to publicise the birth of its cubs, with an unabashed business sense. Somehow the births are timed perfectly for some festive celebration around the corner. And unsuspecting newspapers duly provide coverage, throwing in the patriotic act of boosting tourism for the state.
Permit to abuse
The issue begged a fundamental question – why are entities like A'Famosa, Saleng Zoo and Danga Bay Petting Zoo which are devoid of any conservation purposes allowed to keep totally protected animals like tigers?
In twisted logic fashion, these entities justified their utilisation of the animals for photography sessions as a financial source for feeding and upkeep of the animals.
Totally protected species like tigers, elephants and orangutans can only be kept with a document called Special Permit issued by Perhilitan. This document generally lasts for a year and could be suspended if conditions had been contravened by its holder. And this document is only approved by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment upon favourable advice by Perhilitan.
This permit generally allowed its holder to import, export, confine and breed the animals. In the case of zoo operators, they are allowed to display but it is deafeningly silent on "extra" activities like being forced to participate in photo-prop or providing rides.
Technically-speaking, the A-G's Chambers may not be able to find any faults with these operators unless the charge is centred on cruelty to wildlife as provided for in the Protection of Wildlife Act 1972.
Section 92 (1) c reads: houses, confines or breeds any wild animal or wild bird in such a manner so as to cause it unnecessary pain or suffering including the housing, confining or breeding of any wild animal or wild bird in any cage, enclosure or hut which is not suitable for or conducive to the comfort or health of the wild animal or wild bird.
(The new law – Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 which was passed in the recent parliamentary session – is yet to come into force, hence does not apply to these cases.)
Given that complaints of animal cruelty against these three private outfits are not new, it is highly irresponsible of Perhilitan in continuing to renew the permits, not to mention that there were no suspensions.
In fact, the rather telling revelation from Saleng Zoo over the public uproar on tiger for photography session, was that it was ordered by Perhilitan to stop such activities "until further notice".
According to Perhilitan's published guidelines on zoo operation, it is desirable that public and private zoos are members of Mazpa (The Malaysian Zoological Park Association), which tried to promote good practices of animal-keeping entities. Saleng Zoo is not – yet it continues to exist in an apparent lawless situation.
A'Famosa has been implicated in orangutan smuggling in 2005. After a long investigation, mainly on DNA verification of species and not on the smuggling racket, a total of seven animals were repatriated to Sumatra.
A salient feature in this episode was the presence of a Special Permit issued by Perhilitan that explicitly enabled A'Famosa to import and hold orangutans.
The penalty – none, safe for the initial RM1,000 compound when the offence was first detected in 2000 by the department itself. However, Perhilitan as the management authority of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species did not seize and repatriate the animals until the matter was exposed by the media.
As for Perhilitan's capability of solving trans-boundary smuggling like the hundreds of radiated tortoises from Madagascar or the earlier spate of Indian star tortoises, the results are appalling.
Save for some seizures, we hear nothing about the fate of the human couriers. Were they ever charged? What kind of information did the investigation yield?
Why were the two women not "allowed" to complete their mission in a "control delivery" fashion so that they could lead the enforcers to the ultimate smuggler? It's baffling that after so many cases involving the syndicate adopting similar modus operandi, Perhilitan failed to institute such a simple Standard Operating Procedure. Training had been provided to agencies like Customs that are on the frontline of the war against wildlife trafficking by Perhilitan and the Asean-Wildlife Enforcement Network (Asean-WEN).
Malaysia has been a partner of the Aseanf-WEN since its launch in December 2005. The main task of the largest network of its kind is to strengthen enforcement through intelligence-sharing and to destroy the syndicate behind this crime against biodiversity and our shared natural heritage.
However, except for possibly some small fries (that also we are unsure) that are compounded or fined a few thousand ringgits at most, the syndicate bosses continue laughing to the bank.
Early this year, Malaysia's notorious image as a wildlife transit hub was splashed across the reputable National Geographic magazine. The shaming didn't seem to bother the government much and hence possibly explain why neither the police nor the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (where reports had been filed by concerned animal rights groups) bothered to act.
Wildlife conservationists had long lamented that flora and fauna are last on the list of politicians and decision-makers as they don't have a voice. Perhaps if only those animals have a right to vote every five years will the government sit up and listen.
While the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment claimed that a task force was set up to investigate the matter, it side-stepped the serious allegation of corruption within the highest order of Perhilitan. It is satisfied with the offer by the high-ranking officer, who was implicated with wildlife trader Penang-based Anson Wong in illegal wildlife trade, to institute legal redress in her personal capacity.
That approach is a bit odd and we are still waiting for the officer to follow through with her promise. And along with that, at stake is the integrity of Perhilitan, the ministry and the Malaysian government.
Nevertheless, following numerous expose on the abuse of the Special Permit, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Douglas Uggah had ordered that all applications are to be deliberated at the ministry level.
However, the ability of the ministry is doubted. Often, matters regarding wildlife are referred to Perhilitan by virtue that it is supposed to be the expert, custodian of wildlife management and no less enforcer of the law.
Finally, after 13 years, a new legislation governing wildlife was passed by Parliament early this month.
Some quarters celebrated. They were largely pleased that the penalty for several types of offences, particularly the one dealing with poaching and illegal trading, had been increased, and, therefore, it is assumed that these would have the desired deterrent effect.
The public is relieved and hopes to see the new law provide the promised bites.
Yet, if it has taken this long, one would expect a major overhaul to plug all the loopholes. It is disheartening to see that weaknesses in the old law are being repeated in the new law.
If you want to keep totally protected animals, you can still apply for a Special Permit. If you want to operate a zoo with highly endangered species, just apply too.
If in 1972, totally protected animals are still plentiful, in 2010 and beyond, these species are becoming extinct.
So, what's the justification for importing, exporting, keeping and breeding these animals bearing in mind that all these activities are incentives for wildlife trafficking? Are we indirectly encouraging poaching?
Some quarters would like to see the passing of the bill as a breakthrough but the provision for Special Permit that is retained is suffice to burst the happy bubbles.
The battle against wildlife trafficking in Malaysia is not over; it just got tougher because by the next round of amendment, there is probably no totally protected species to defend.

The 10-year-old Education Ministry circular restricting the formation of non-Muslim religious societies in schools is the best example of Little Napoleons running riot in the civil service working against the national interests of educating a critical and creative generation of Malaysians and harnessing the multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural assets of plural Malaysia.
What is the use of boasting about Malaysia as a model of ethnic, cultural, religious and biological diversity and Malaysia's rich and unique cultural heritage when restrictions continue to be in place affecting the formation of non-Muslim societies in schools?
The Cabinet on Wednesday should scrap the 10-year-old Education Ministry circular restricting the formation of non-Muslim religious societies in schools as it is against Prime Minister's 1Malaysia slogan and policy and the New Economic Model objective to educate a critical, creative and innovative generation of Malaysians.
The Education Ministry circular dated 16th December 2000 stated that non-Muslim religious societies formed before 2000 need not have to be registered but remain as status quo. Those set up from 2000 onwards need approval by the registrar, which is the state education department director.
For ten years, the circular was used by Biro Tatanegara-trained Little Napoleons in the Education Ministry to discourage, hamper or downright disallow the formation of non-Muslim religious societies.
Why should there be a distinction between non-Muslim religious societies formed before 2000 and after – when it should be a positive factor to allow and encourage the formation of non-Muslim religious societies in schools under proper guidance and supervision?
The Cabinet should not only scrap the 10-year-old Education Ministry circular restricting the formation of non-Muslim religious societies in schools, but should call for up for review all government regulations and circulars which run contrary to the 1Malaysia policy enunciated by Najib as well as the other pillars of Najib's National Transformation programme to transform Malaysia into a inclusive, sustainable high-income developed nation.

Some one also wants to be a Hero especially going all out against PKR/DAP/PCM." Does he know that he might have shortened his political life especially on the mention of PKR wanita chief Ibi ak.Uding.
A PKR supporter asked" Could it be done deliberately..? Politicians know the repercussions and the reason will be reflected in the coming State Elections. We are campaigning in the best way we know. Communists are we..?? "
The Sarawak tribune covered the article in Project 71 covering N25 Balai Ringin and the headline appeared was "Beware the thieves in the night"
Snowdan Lawan assemblyman for N25 Balai Ringgin has compared the actions of opposition politicians to tactics of CCOs(communist guerillas) He questioned the motives of opposition politicians who went 'from longhouse to longhouse in the dark of the night to gather support" He also threw down the gauntlet to PKR Wanita chief ibi ak Uding to come out in the open. He also welcomed the DAP and PCM as he said."the more the merrier"
Meanwhile audie61 called the PKR Wanita chief for any updates. It has been a BUZZ today and our PKR source mentioned to us that Ibi has been receiving a lot of calls and it has indeed been inescapable from most political conversations in Sarawak.
Every poltical party are making preparations for the impending Sarawak state elections and there will be hundreds of statements of this magnitude and Snowdan will not be the last to challenge the opposition politicians.
A check with tribune newsroom and there is a counter reaction and this was filed in by their lead reporter and we publish the contents here:-
Abang Salfian Nawawi
WE ARE NOT LIKE COMMUNIST
KUCHING: Sarawak Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Wanita Vice Chairlady Voon Sia Nie refuted to YB Snowdan Lawan's statement on the frontpage of New Sarawak Tribune's on July 26th (yesterday) comparing the opposition's tactic of the CCOs (communist guerrillas).
"We are not like communist and we are not thieves," she said adding that "it is not a very fair statement" and asked Snowdan to clarify what does he meant by that statement.
"What is wrong about us coming to the longhouse at night, it a democratic country, we are not "thieves" stealing, we are just campaigning as the State election is near," said Voon, venting her anger through a telephone interview yesterday.
"That type of statement is not very good and I want to ask him (Snowdan) what is the different when he (Snowdan) went to the longhouses to campaign..nobody is stopping him so what is wrong with us doing it."
"Wait and see the next State election, PKR central had identified Ibi as one of the potential candidate (in N.25 Balai Ringin) according to the quota for Pakatan Rakyat (PR)," she adding that Ibi is presently concentrating on the fight (campaigning).
In the last State election, in a three corner fight, Snowdan garned 3,075 votes defeated an independant candidate Cobbold Lui (742) and Ibi Uding (contesting on a SNAP ticket) garned 1,559.

The crying DPM. So touching.
Hi this is Patrick Teoh. Did you see the photo of Muhyiddin Yassin crying today? I saw one in The Star this morning. Very emotional shot. In full living color. Our Deputy Prime Minister who is reputed to be a grump who never smiles, with a hanky to his nose and eyes tearing. Quite drama one la. Of course whether the tears were of the reptilian variety or otherwise was not clearly stated la. Muhyiddin cried after handing out a check to former Johor state assemblyman Muntaha Kailan who is a stroke victim and a long-time friend of his.
According to the story in The Star a group of former elected representatives who are chronically ill received financial aid from the current batch of wakil rakyat who teed off in an effort to ease their burden.
Over 100 politicians, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, spent their Sunday morning taking part in the Tan Sri Muhyiddin Charity Golf (TSMCG)-Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club tournament at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
Personally, I find it in rather bad taste to have all those chaps who are all either dying, chronically ill or paralysed sit there while the YB's and VIP's go strolling on the golf course enjoying themselves in ways the other group obviously can't. And then having to suffer the indignity of being hand-outs at the end of it. I would have thought that if the government really cared about these people something more long-term would have been set in place to take care of needful ex-civil servants who deserve help. Don't you? But of course that would not look as good in the newspapers la.
And another thing ah. Why do our leaders so love to cry in public? Make us look like a nation of pansies la. Remember the old general who cried when some people accused him of screwing up the Commonwealth Games? Cried on national TV and all was forgiven. Then the most famous cryer, Mahathir cried like a baby during an Umno general assembly. And we know how much was forgiven after that don't we? And now our Deputy Prime Minister weeps like a baby. Wonder what he's after?

By HawkeyeCOMMENT Around 25 years ago, an upstart education unionist, N Siva Subramaniam, was criticised in the open about his stance on the management of Tamil vernacular schools.
This drew the ire of MIC president S Samy Vellu who countered in the media, asking for members of the National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) to stop supporting Siva who was then their secretary-general.
An open tirade broke out with various quarters offering their insights, some supporting Samy Vellu while others said it is unfair for a politician to pick on a public sector unionist.
The federal government had come to the defence with the then-education minister Anwar Ibrahim, urging his then-colleague (Samy Vellu) to use discreet or inhouse channels to vent out his displeasure with Siva, instead of relying on the media.
Does this sound familiar?
Last week, the Penang State Development Officer Nik Ali Mat Yunus in an unprecedented move, lambasted Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng through the media, describing him as rude and a coward.
He held an impromptu press conference and managed to distribute his own press statements after attending a state development committee meeting where the members were state Umno leaders.
Nik Ali simply got fed up with Lim for constantly linking him to the various bureaucratic shortcomings in Penang.
Internal channels available
Siva, now a retiree, but who remains a social activist at heart, said both sides are wrong and as the saying goes, "Two wrongs do not make a right."
There are proper internal channels to use, Siva said, adding that having an open dispute before the public is not ideal for a politician and a senior federal officer, especially when the civil service is bound by the General Orders requirements.
In turn, Lim said the dispute remains a status quo as he cannot do anything against this stubborn federal officer.
The state government has exhausted all means to resolve it. So, an impasse has emerged but the main crux is, whether the problems of the people in Penang are addressed.
State PAS deputy commissioner Mujahid Yusof Rawa had lamented that problems in Penang seem to keep on emerging like "lava from a volcano" even before the state can resolve previous ones.
After over two-years of heighten politics amid the rise of Pakatan Rakyat as a formidable alternative to the mighty Barisan Nasional, the people of Penang now just want promises delivered and good governance.
To be fair to Lim whose reputation as a straightforward personality tends to rub people the wrong way at times, his grouse with Nik Ali has nothing to do with politics but rather over performance, the delivery system.
Lim wants the country to be performance-orientated and not digressed into one where political leanings dominate how administration and enforcement are conducted.
It's old argument
This episode between Lim and Nik Ali, sets the country 25-years back as both are merely indulging in what had transpired previously, yet no solution is in the offering.
Sacrifice is a big word and a practise, which both Pakatan and BN must learn to embrace if the country wants to champion and accept the two-party system principle.
The civil service must be allowed to perform to the expectations of the people who are their paymasters and not the politicians.
Siva said politicians come and go based on the people's inclinations but the civil service remains.
They carry out the policies, they carry out the services and they enforce social order such as upholding law and regulations.
They cannot be seen as political allies and neither, should their role be politicised, he added.
Both Pakatan and BN must learn to sacrifice as watching on the sidelines are the people who are badly in need of leadership, commitment and an unrelenting willpower for the country to be progressive in the age of globalisation.
Sacrificing also means compromising. ao the fervant hope of the people is for Pakatan and Barisan to compromise, swallow their pride and move on in ensuring Malaysia lives up to its potential as a noticeable Third World nation.

Awaiting reply from Oxford University and Loreal AG.
Appreciate if you can forward this to your corporate communications partner in central. L'Oreal is a sponsor for a chair in Oxford University and they have chosen to work with a personality that has very low concern on diversity and environment.
Subject: Regret in the choice of Said Business School's speaker for The Inaugural Oxford Global Islamic Branding and Marketing Forum
As concerned citizens in Malaysia and as volunteers to the state of Sarawak where we tried to help to locals who were marginalized and suffered.
It is with great regret to hear of the choice of your main speaker of Mohd Taib Mahmud, the Chief Ministers of Sarawak to the Inaugural Oxford Global Islamic Branding and Marketing Forum
It would be great for an exteemed business school to be extremely careful with your selection of speakers. A simple querry via internet would reveal who the speaker is and the vested interest of Tanjung Manis Halal hub, which is linked to questionable business practices. However, my concern has been on the impact of environmental deforestation and the lack of justice to the aborogines in the state where this said person is governing. Please take a look at some of my personal postings
The local media has repeatedly uses your university's name and the locals are wondering on how an esteemed organisation like Oxford can be so simplistic in its approach.
As such, we would appreciate a solid response from the organisors to justify its selection from the view of ethical business practices and even, Islamic governance & justice.

In case you are wondering why I put this particular picture here,
well this is the VIP seat that LGE says he did not get
and because he 'did not get' a VIP seat a the launch of the
Penang Funicular railway redevelopment
He thinks the State Development Officer
should be sacked for makan gaji buta...
Maybe it is LGE who is buta.. buta perut
and now he wants to sue Utusan for publishing
the SDO's side of the story
Like all Pakatan politicians,
LGE thinks his is the only side
Lim Guan Eng is doing his best to create a Pavlovian response from the Main Stream Media by leashing his legal mongrels on all and any newspaper that do not report the news in the way he likes it.
His love of setting lawyers on anyone he disagrees is a clear indication of how he would behave should federal powers fall into his hands. With federal machinery in his control one can fully expect his pack of legal mongrels to advice him that arrest and imprisonment is absolutely necessary to maintain peace.
It is clear from his actions that LGE, is a spoilt brat who has always had his way because daddy owns the party much like his Singapore cousin Lee Hsien Loong.
Anyway, one can only muster a snigger these days when LKS's spoilt son says he is going to sue Utusan... aahh another one of those is it???
Then there is Malaysiakini, the newsportal that has abandoned all pretense of being fair and balanced and decided that their new motto should be 'All the news that's full of Praise of Pakatan',
I don't really have penchant for good taglines, I like this one from GAP better,
All the news that's full of shit
Desperate to repel the initial salvo of Selangor Umno against the DAP dominated Pakatan government, this cesspool of editorialised manure decided to take a cheap shot by doing the only thing they know how to do well, launch a personal attack on the attacker -
they are now fully adheres to the party line that Khir Toyo is only bad for Umno.
While Tempe-Man may not be all too wholesome, he is doing a heck of a lot more than anyone else to expose the severe environmental damage being inflicted by Sand thieves under Khalid Gagap's watch.
Fact is fact, Khir Toyo knows the game, he knows that people are out to get him, he knows people are digging up his dirt but yet he dares to whack open the Sand scandal... one has to wonder why...
My bet is that sand was not his game, he may have issued sand extraction permit as MB but it was not his game...people like Selangor Umno Youth Chief, KJ-linked Suhaimi may finally get to see stories about his greed hit the pages of Malaysiakini -- oh wait a minute... he is a KJ boy so maybe Malaysiakini won't attack him....what am I saying??? why wouldn't Malaysiakini attack KJ??? oh who knows...we will leave it at that.
The sand story is just the tip of the iceberg and you can expect things to get worse because pakatan media, old and new are the perfect political lapdog...
Pro-Umno blogs, like this one, are hitting Umno hard... we do not stop or filter comments and we don't pull punches when it comes to criticising Umno and BN
We tell MCA and Gerakan to go join DAP and form the Chinese Chauvinist trinity
We tell Umno that if they don't buck up they will lose the 13th General Election..
Most of all we love telling Samy Vellu that he is beyond ridiculous in that wig...

Lee Way Loon
A year has passed since the tragic passing of Teoh Beng Hock, but his family is still unable to come to terms with his death.
During an emotional speech at Beng Hock's memorial last night, his younger sister Lee Lan said her family's inability to reconcile with the death was due to the lack of answers forthcoming from the authorities.
Often fighting back tears, Lee Lan appealed to the 1,000-strong crowd at the Kuala Lumpur-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall to offer "nothing but support" for the family's fight for the truth.
"Your support gives us strength. I'm standing here before you because my family is seeking justice. Our family cannot reconcile with (Beng Hock's) death.
"He was a good young man and he had left us. He didn't even have the opportunity to cradle his own baby," said Lee Lan, referring to Teoh's son, born recently.
"We are not asking for much, only justice. We are worried that we may not have enough strength to pull through," she said.
Lee Lan has over the past year been the main spokesperson for Beng Hock's family.
Family worried inquest will be inconclusive
Lee Lan's speech was punctuated with sombre applause at every major junction, while tears flowed for some among the audience.
"The inquest will soon come to an end and we are worried that the finding would be inconclusive. That is why we hope you will support us.
"We don't know how long this will take, but we promise that we will pursue (the truth) till the end and I hope you will all stand by us," said Lee Lan, who at one point apologised for not being a good orator.
After Lee Lan's short speech, a short tribute video clip was screened depicting Beng Hock's happier moments.
The video clip featured Beng Hock's photographs and his last known video recording, albeit only his voice could be heard as he was behind the camera.
Earlier, Beng Hock's family, along with DAP leaders and their Pakatan Rakyat comrades, took to the stage in a solemn ceremony to place red palm prints on a massive banner.
Rosmah dragged in too
Following this, Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng spoke in a lengthy speech casting doubts at the authorities' attempt to paint Beng Hock's death as a suicide.
Guan Eng, as he had done many times before, reasoned to the crowd that there was no way Beng Hock would have committed suicide as he was due to register his marriage to his pregnant
"I want to ask Najib: Would you commit suicide if you're going to marry Rosmah tomorrow?" asked Guan Eng.
While most of the crowd shouted "No", a significant portion shouted "Yes! Yes!" breaking the mood of the otherwise sombre memorial event.
Realising that his attempt to trigger an uniform response was not very successful, Guan Eng quickly added, "No! Because he loves Rosmah!", forcing most of his audience to laugh.
Thus, according to Guan Eng, to argue that Beng Hock commit suicide was illogical.
"No one believes this. Only the wicked, and those who want to insult Beng Hock's family, would say so," he said.
One year is too long
Guan Eng also lambasted the authorities for failing to provide answers to Beng Hock's family although a year had passed.
Comparing investigations on Beng Hock's death to that of pop superstar Michael Jackson, Guan Eng said the the probe into the latter's death was swift.
"Michael Jackson died on June 25. It has been one year and the person responsible (for his death) is already being punished.
"Beng Hock died a year ago and we are still as far from the truth as we were a year ago," he said.
Guan Eng then jokingly suggested that the authorities should employ the services of the investigation team into Jackson's death to expedite the probe into Beng Hock's death.
Guan Eng was among a long list of speakers during the memorial, which included DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang, Selangor legislative assembly speaker Teng Chang Khim and Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar.
MACC chief flayed
In her speech, Nurul Izzah said Beng Hock's mysterious death and her father Anwar Ibrahim's arsenic poisoning incident were reasons for the people's struggle for reforms.
"A student once told me that while the arsenic incident did not cause anyone to die, now a person being investigated by MACC can result in death," she said.
In view of this, Nurul Izzah said that the people must not give up hope that the system can be reformed in order for justice to prevail.
Meanwhile, Kit Siang lambasted MACC chief Abu Kassim Mohamed for issuing a statement of condolence a year after Teoh's death, but also for initially issuing the statement only in Mandarin.
"It is only after public outcry did an English and Bahasa statement appear on their website," he said.
He added that this has put a large question mark on Abu Kassim's sincerity and integrity.

COMMENT One of Asia's greatest kleptocrats and single-handedly one of the most destructive forces against the environment, the Chief Minister of Sarawak, East Malaysia, Abdul Taib Mahmud, has been invited to present the opening address at the Said Business School's inaugural Islamic Branding and Marketing Forum, July 26 (Monday).
During his 30 years of iron grip over Sarawak, Taib Mahmud has systematically plundered a country once rich in natural resources, oil and timber. He and his family are now multi-billionaires, while indigenous tribes resort to the law courts to reclaim their ancestral lands.
The Penan are struggling to keep his loggers out of the last corners of their jungle, one of the most precious remaining areas of biodiversity left on earth. A recent report has revealed shocking evidence of their treatment, including the systematic rape and abuse of their women by logging workers, an outrage that Taib has refused to acknowledge or investigate.
Taib has destroyed all but 3% of the Borneo jungle in the state, which had been handed all but intact into the care of his uncle, his predecessor. Habitats which are home to the Orang Utan, proboscis monkey, a plethora of unique plant and animal life have been destroyed due to his rapacious and unsustainable plunder of the jungle. Oil palm plantations span for miles and miles where ancient trees once stood before they were cut down. One would think that proceeds from exports would have been ploughed back into the state but the people of Sarawak remain some of the poorest in Malaysia.
Taib's "business interests" are notorious. The whole state of Sarawak has been illegally absorbed into the possession of his cronies and family members through "privatisation" and the handing out of palm oil and timber concessions, via arbitrary state acquisitions of native lands. He now runs the state as a family business, maintained through systematic electoral intimidation and fraud.
Taib has laughably advertised his UK visit as a promotion of "green development" in Sarawak and will be focusing on the promotion of Islamic and halal products, his latest venture, during his visit to Oxford. But, we ask – just how "halal" are products produced under the auspices of this man ?
It is a standing disgrace that Oxford University should be extending a hand of welcome and supporting the status of such a man. His wealth and ability to endow is not in doubt; however, there is no possible basis of legitimacy for such wealth, as can only be plainly apparent to all his hosts.
The people of Sarawak are struggling to rid themselves of this man and his parasitical family and to preserve their unique environmental heritage from his further "business ventures".
Please lend your support to their struggle and to the campaign to preserve what is left of the Book of Life and the Borneo Jungle's natural wealth. Defend the rights of the indigenous tribes that rely on the rainforest for their livelihoods. Demand that Taib explain the source of money that has enabled him to purchase multi-million pound properties in Canada, US and the UK.
Be there to receive him and protest at the disgraceful invitation that has been extended to him by Oxford University and the Said Business School.

Sigh. Looks like this blog is going to degenerate into some sort of Jho gossip rag :P First some pics you might've seen already, and then some you probably have not re: more Rosmah debauchary.
(ps- is all this just jealousy? You bet. You'll probably catch me doing worse some day. Just. Hopefully. Not on the rakyat's dime).
So, just after we read this:
We get wind of this:
Ah, see that last one? One day I will be part of the entourage – probably the hamsuplo on the bottom right. Flers fingers like mine, mebbe more ways than one :P
These pictures were reportedly taken at Byblos Nightclub in Saint Tropez. Don't ask me where that is – not rich or famous enough to know :) This gossip site (with quite the picture) has the amount spent that night at 1.8 million POUNDS (RM 8.8 million today, if you're counting. In. A. Single. Night.). Erk.
Eh, but you all don't hate on Jho so much k? Mebbe it's true love:
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
CAPTION CONTEST TIME! haha :)
The other thing I came across over the weekend were photos taken during a "Faces of 1Malaysia" dinner was held at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington DC on April 13th, 2010.
These pictures feature, of all people, Stevie Wonder!
Haha, no that video was not from the event. But these pics apparently were:
Do I have any way of proving this wasn't just some other dinner? Nope, can't say I do, but if anyone wants to deny it, please feel free.
As I said before, there's generally no harm in indulging in all sorts of debauchary – I'm no moralist in that regard. That said though:
1. This is the PM and his wife we're talking about.
2. How much is all this costing WHO exactly?
I think the latter question is the one and only thing that justifies our continued attention.
This obssession with celebrities must also give us pause as to the nature of the second couple – what their priorities are in life, what they want to spend money on, and how they go about spending that money.
More thoughts on these to come soon I hope.
Oh! And I almost forgot. A great little bird from the UK sent me a press statement from the Bruno Manser Fund today:
Right on the money.
And oh, how did Taib get this invitation in the first place?
I don't suppose it has anything to do with oh, I don't know, Washington based lobbying firms perhaps? Ones with secretaries named Jo maybe?
As the cliche has it, the plot thickens.
pps- Neverending supply of pics. More here

Iran cleric issues fatwa against dogs
Western-style ownership of 'unclean' pets must stop, he says
A senior Iranian cleric has decreed dogs are "unclean" and should not be kept as pets — a move aimed at discouraging Western-style dog ownership in the Islamic state, a newspaper reported on Saturday.
Dogs are considered "unclean" under Islamic tradition but, while relatively rare in Iran, some people do keep them as pets.
By issuing a fatwa — a religious ruling — Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi has sent a clear message that this trend must stop.
"Friendship with dogs is a blind imitation of the West," he was quoted as saying in Javan daily. "There are lots of people in the West who love their dogs more than their wives and children."
Guard dogs and sheep dogs are considered acceptable under Islamic law but Iranians who carry dogs in their cars or take them to public parks can be stopped by police and fined.
The Koran does not explicitly prohibit contact with dogs, Shirazi said, but Islamic tradition showed it to be so. "We have lots of narrations in Islam that say dogs are unclean."
Terkejut bila baca berita sedekian . maka mula pemikiran anak mami, wujudnya banyak soalan seperti :
a) Kenapa ajaran islam sering mengajar umatnya bergaduh dengan anjing , babi, binatang?
Mufti pun menyalak seperti anjing. Buat fitnah. Bikin cerita .
c) Kalau anjing kotor, apa pula kucing?

Moderate Muslims strongly disapprove these actions and dare to claim
that this is not true Islam. True Islam is full of love(!), peace(!)
and tolerance(!). Now the question is who knows Islam better? Those
moderate Muslims who have a vague idea of Islam or those
fundamentalists who have spent their life in learning Islam? They went
to Madrassas and graduated from highest level of religious school.
Most of them received no other education but mastering on Quran and
ahadith. They have one good quality. They will do what they believe.
While, most of their actions are threat to mankind but they are not
hypocrite like politically correct Islamic scholars. These scholars
have changed their strategy of preaching Islam. They would twist and
fabricate the meanings of simple things.
Is real Islam a complete way of life? Indeed, It's completely a
barbarian way of life.
Unquestionably, all fundamentalists have better knowledge of true
Islam and they are the one who leads prayer in the mosque of all
countries with a few exceptions of western countries. Although
moderate Muslims disapprove the actions of the fundamentalists but do
not mind offering prayer behind those enemy of mankind. Also, these
fundamentalists are the mentors of moderate Muslims.
. All I have to say about this kit business is that the clerics in our country all live in the Stone Ages. They're so narrow minded that they've all gone cross-eyed .
Muslim clerics preach Islam based on political influence of that specific region. When they are in an Islamic country, they take pride in explaining and enforcing Islamic laws. Jihad means holy war. They inspire and act accordingly.
If we look at the behavior of our fundamentalist bretheren in Nigeria,
Algeria, Indonesia, Philippines, Palestine, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and so on. They are happily slaying and kidnapping innocent people to establish Islamic Sharia law. They do not hesitate to instill the ugly and brutal part of Islam.
Seriously... talk about making Muslims the world over look dumb. These idiotic clerics are just making Islam look bad. Honestly, Islam is about moderation. These guys are just supremely stupid extremists. Please do not think other Muslims are as stupid as these clerics... There are many of us who are open minded and not stuck in Neanderthal-mode.
Moderate Muslims follow a fraction of Islamic teachings. Unknowingly,
They have reformed Islam to a great length. For some Muslims it's a
culture rather than a religion. It's fortunate that all Muslims do
not act as Talibians. Their conscious and liberal mind grasps only the
good part of the religion. They neither have the courage to follow
true Islam nor they have the courage to stand up and reject Islam as a
whole. They do not have the courage to follow true Islam because some
of the teachings are violent, some are unrealistic and some are
inappropriate. They can not reject Islam because they were born in a
Muslim family, taught to fear the hellfire and they have the greed to
go to a fantasyland called heaven. They are afraid to break the wall
and scared to think differently. ARE THEY COWARD?

IT'S BECAUSE .... LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING IN THIS KIND OF ENVIRONMENT .......
LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING IN MALAYSIA ......... A CORRUPTED COUNTRY WITH FULL OF CORRUPTED LEADERS ...........
IT'S BETTER FOR THEM TO DIE RATHER THAN LIVING IN THIS 'HELL OF A COUNTRY' ....... ONLY CERTAIN QUARTERS WOULD SAY THAT MALAYSIA IS HEAVEN ...... YES! OF COURSE ......... MALAYSIA IS HEAVENS FOR THOSE CORRUPTED ONES ......... THOSE WHO EARN THEIR LIVING THRU EASY MONEY ..... DIRTY MONEY ...... OF COURSE THEY WOULD SAY 'MALAYSIA IS HEAVEN ON EARTH'.....
AND THOSE ABANDONED BABIES (ALREADY DEAD THEN) WOULD BE MUCH 'BETTER OF' BEFORE THE TIME WHEN THEIR SINFUL PARENTS EVER FIRST MATED (i.e. HAVING SEXUAL INTERCOURSE WRONGFULLY - BERSETUBUH OR BERZINA)....... THEY WOULD BE MORE COMFORTABLE IN THEIR PREVIOUS LIFE (i.e. BEFORE THEIR LIFE BEGINS IN THEIR SINFUL MOTHER'S WOMB).
JUST FANCY THAT .......
HAVE YOU EVER WONDER?
WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE YOU'RE IN YOUR MOTHER'S WOMB?
DO YOU ???? (EVERYONE OF US REMEMBER? OR AWARE??? WHERE WE WERE?? OR WHERE YOU WERE??? BEFORE YOU WERE BORNED INTO THIS BLOODY WORLD?

I read this article with some interest. Not sure as to the accuracy of its stats and conclusions, but it does jive with certain things I've been thinking about.
Reading some news from the world over, I can't help but sometimes think that a two party system – while infinitely better than a single party system – isn't quite sufficient to fully reflect all of our realities.
I've been thinking a lot about alternative models, albeit not having enough discipline to write any of it down :(yet, i hope).
Anyway. Worth reflecting on. Hopefully inspire us to think outside the box in the long run.

From Zakay Rehman, via e-mail
This can be redressed and should be redressed. Note that for the states of Penang and Selangor, strata living are the common folk's way of living, and demographically the trend will expend rather than reverse, which will benefit the 'politically' savvy government that sees this opportunity.
