I am a big advocate of lifelong learning. It doesn't matter whether it's for the paper qualifications or just for the fun of learning something new. I get all excited whenever I meet like-minded retirees. There's instant bonding.

That's exactly what happened last Sunday. I was at Wawasan Open University's Orientation Day for new students. There I met Monica Khoo, 68, a retired nurse and grandmother of five. She has just enrolled for a certificate course in Business Management, and is one of several retirees currently studying at WOU.

"I always like to try new things. It helps to activate the brain cells. Of course, there's that feeling of anxiety. Will I be able to cope with the challenges of open distance learning? It's so alien to me. But I am excited too, and definitely looking forward to my first tutorial next Sunday."

At WOU KL branch with Regional Office Director Mr Kuppusamy Chellappan, Acting Asst Manager Ms Janet Khaw (in blue) and Adm Assistant Esther (in green).

If you are seriously considering further studies, you might want to check out Wawasan Open University (WOU). You can choose from certificate to postgraduate courses. There's no maximun age limit. Entry requirements are flexible. Fees are really affordable as students aged 60 and above get a 50% discount. Other plus points: the medium of instruction is English, and the student population is truly multi-ethnic. Oh, did I also mention well-qualified and experienced tutors like Mr Fan Kok Keong below?

Advice from tutor Fan Kok Keong (click on image to enlarge).

By the way, WOU is not paying me a cent to promote it. I'm merely stating what is. Check out the website to find out more. It's still not too late to register. The new semester starts next week. There are two intakes a year, in January and July.

Anwar's sodomy case: Leave Karpal out laaa!

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 09:43 AM PDT

Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial drags again, this time it was postponed to August 2. Judge Datuk Zabidin Mohd Diah was left to choice but to allow the adjournment because one of Anwar's lawyers, Karpal Singh was on medical leave.

And we can expect more adjournments after this. Why? For Anwar to gather more political support locally and internationally. As for Saiful, he too got to wait whether he can 'really' win this case, which caused him no embarrassment at all... not just yet.

Whatever it is, why must the Court has to wait to Karpal to recover in order to proceed with the case? Anwar got other lawyers with him and they are, I believe, as good as the DAP strongman, whom Anwar managed to 'tame' since they became good friends in Pakatan Rakyat. It is the same guy Anwar blasted and hated most when he was still with the government.

Yes, Karpal is a good lawyer but his age is catching up. Let's 'enlighten' him a bit by allowing the others to defend Anwar. Perhaps Anwar is becoming too dependent on Karpal as he sees some 'chances' to win the legal battle with Saiful.

The case has been prolonged for too long already. The Court must be firm next time not to allow any more postponements and adjournments (read here). There is nothing special about this case anymore, except that to distinguish who is actually the liar.

Who got buggered doesnt matter anymore. What matters most now is to safe the Court's time as there are other important cases waiting to be settled.

Who knows, maybe we would listen to the submarine scandal and its 700 million euros sidekick given to a company which is connected to a minister's wife after this. That is more interesting, doesnt it?

So, with or without Karpal, let just sum it up! If you are really clean and 'berani' enough, leave Karpal out of the case!

[Malaysia Today] Real Politik Dikemaskini

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 08:50 AM PDT

Perak Mufti ain't no Saladin

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 07:20 AM PDT

Hundreds of years ago, maybe even a thousand or more, many Indians on the subcontinent, especially those from the lower caste became Muslims because Islam freed them from society's iniquitous shackles. As Muslims they could give the bird to human imposed social barriers.

For them, for justice, for humanity, Islam was the great social equalizer.

But wait, read The Malaysian Insider's Perak PAS Youth calls Harussani a racist, which says (extracts):

Perak PAS Youth also rejects Tan Sri Harussani's racist attitude and his responsibility as a Mufti. While abroad especially in Australia in June 2010 Tan Sri Harussani revealed his hate against other races during his ceramah with Malaysian students there.

Hmmm, what brand of Islam is he practising? Surely not the Islamic Great Equalizer!

If Perak PAS Youth's accusation has been correct, then the Mufti's unique brand of Islam has somehow accommodated his bigoted hate of 'other races', presumably non-Malays. Within the Malaysian context, the Mufti must have also included Chinese and Indian Muslims? Or worse, Arab Muslims?

Like the religion of the Hebrews-Israelis, his too has a 'chosen race' where other races are goyims (kaffirs) to be destroyed.

"When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations ... then you must destroy them totally. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy." - Deuteronomy 7:1-2, NIV.

"... do not leave alive anything that breaths. Completely destroy them ... as the Lord your God has commanded you ..." - Deuteronomy 20:16, NIV.

Hmmm, charming people ... and in the Mufti's relevation to Malaysian students in Australia he showed his thinking were/are not different from those biblical Hebrews-Israelis.

Incidentally, HTF did he became a Tan Sri when he was the man responsible for nearly causing religious-racial violence through a seditious SMS in 2006 ...

... and worse, when the sh*t hit the fan he blamed the whole seditious crime on a woman. F* pathetic!

“Pakatan4 BN4 Head On”

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 06:55 AM PDT

On July 1st we wrote,"Pakatan 4 vs BN 4" 13th July we posted this article.

Barely 3 weeks have gone past and the 1st Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak Council held yesterday has agreed that the opposition coalition will face off against BN in one-on-one battles in the upcoming state elections.

According to a political watcher he said that Wong Ho Leng MP and Adun Bukit Assek mentioned that the Pakatan coalition needs to wrestle at least 36 seats in order to detrone the BN Sarawak. There was also a 4 point resolution in that it includes

  • To gear up for Sarawak polls,
  • To resolve to capture Sarawak from BN,
  • To form a Pakatan committee to coordinate seat allocations, and
  • To come up with a joint manifesto for the election.

audie61received a number of calls from a number of  BN assemblyman and political secretaries to CM and they said,"eventhough Pakatan has now made their intentions known our elections machinery has long been in place and ready to engage in the political battle."

Kesan Kurang Subsidi dan Negara Bangkrap(Baik Buang UMNO).

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 05:13 AM PDT

Akibatnya Indonesia terpaksa memotong subsidi makanan, minyak, gas dsbnya.

Itulah dia nasib Malaysia sekiranya UMNO terus memerintah.

Independent media: the vanguard of democracy

Posted: 18 Jul 2010 04:42 PM PDT

By G Krishnan

COMMENT The spread and increasing popularity of the so-called 'new media' has been nothing short of a revolutionary transformation. This new media, especially the independent type, has redefined journalism, the dissemination of the news, public engagement in current affairs, politics, and our everyday lives.

Indeed, it has redefined our culture.Especially fascinating is the fact that like it or not, politicians have had to wake up to the reality that old ways of controlling and manipulating information are now obsolete.

As much as the political establishment may lament the loss of those 'good old days' when the only source of news the public had was that which was largely controlled by those who also held the reigns of political power, there remains a deep schism and tension between the old, which are largely the state-controlled outlets, and new media, which are clearly far more democratic, competitive, and diverse.

Obviously, while the old establishment media has sought to make in-roads on tapping into the technologies and formats of the new media, it remains the case that the fundamental principle of monopoly and control, which has been typical of the old media has been rendered less effective and less consequential than ever.

To be sure, that monopoly and control is still relevant; state-controlled media still has a significant impact on shaping the public agenda, manipulating public opinion, and in promoting a particular ideology.

But the new media, which almost by definition have enabled the increased democratisation of society, posses a fundamental challenge for the political establishment. Prepared or not, it presents the establishment with an unavoidable conundrum: how to retain control of information in an increasingly democratised information age?

Contradictory signals

It is in this backdrop that one must interpret recent developments regarding, among other things, the crackdown on Harakah and Suara Keadilan, and the banning of the books by the cartoonist Zunar.

Indeed, these developments remind us all about the continued concerns about political intervention in the media and especially in journalism.

In April 2009, Najib was reported to have backed the idea of a freer state-owned media, where reporting can be done "without fear of consequences".

But not long thereafter, we began to confront the fact that the government seemed intent on restricting the reporting of various news stories that might not reflect so favourably on various political figures. How ironic.

Precisely how would one reconcile these two obviously contradictory signals? Of course the cynic might be inclined to insist that the former claims by the prime minister are nothing more than the typical posturing we've come to be accustomed to.

And there might after all be some truth to this particular interpretation.

One year later, the Joshua Wong episode at ntv7 reminded us – once again – just how far we truly have gotten in the media from being "without fear of consequences".

But more than exposing the potential lack of sincerity in such purported claims about wanting to promote a freer media, these contradictory tendencies reveal a fundamental flaw of the system of information control that has prevailed.

Free expression of ideas

That is, the continued presence and influence of the government in the media, and even more critically, the notion of state-owned media, cannot but stifle open inquiry, free debate, and deliberation - the democratic process.

State-owned and controlled media may be with us for the foreseeable future but the exploding popularity and credibility of the more independent outlets prevalent in the 'new media', which have emerged as a counter-weight to the state-owned forms of media, may be the single most critical check on the abuse of power in the country.

Where the credibility of the judiciary and police has been so acutely and systematically compromised, short of the alternative media, there aren't other genuinely credible institutions remaining to which one can turn to for keeping the political establishment in check.

State-owned media cannot be anything but a propaganda machine. This is an indisputable fact. A democracy, on the other hand, can only be nourished when the media can openly champion the free expression of ideas.

Ini lah suratkhabar yang ingin memberangsangkan Melayu minat dalam perkauman, tambahan pulak ex pkr top man yang bertungkus lumus mempertahankan hak melayu , hero melayu, mempertahankan Islam ... last sekali jadi lawak bodoh dan dihina pelbagai macam.

Aku ingat yang lawyer peguam ini cerdik2 belaka! Kerjanya suci bersih macam breeze menolong orang ramai.

Islamic Teaching

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 12:09 AM PDT

The term "Muslim" simply means "believer" in arabic and has been around long before Muhammad came along. Currently, it is sad that they who call themselves believers have been grossly overtaken by ego and zeal, and complete ignorance of one of the fundamental principles of monotheism: The belief that only God guides whom He wills and only He knows who has been guided.

It is shockingly simple, but the reality is that there wasnt an "Islamic" empire in the middle east. There was an empire. They spread doctrine and sectarian teachings, brainwashing each generation as they went along. Those sectarian, indoctrinated zealots created what is now termed the "Islamic" empire that some people nowadays (usually deluded deprived marginalized poor people) glorify to feel good about themselves.

God/Allah/Yahweh/Jehovah/Elohim (semantics. Im typing in english so i use the term God) knows who the believers (arabic: muslims) are. Not these religionists who stand against what America is all about. I say kick them out. Accept religious freedom or get expelled. "Islamists" and "Muslims" in today's society are promoting the proselytism of children and think they have the God given right to know who are the believers. Such ego, hatred, and us-vs-them mentality does good for no society.

Islam is not something you learn from your parents, it's not something you can convert into, it is not something that anyone can judge you for save God. The Islamists are deluded and are paying the price of their ego and self-righteousness. They divide the world into believers and unbelievers/infidels (arabic: kafir).
To the Islamists out there:

1) Only god guides whom he wills; only God leaves people astray; Only God knows who the believers are.

2) You are nobody.

3) You change nothing.

There is no such thing as a "moderate Islam". Islam is Islam. Islam according to all mainstream doctrines/sects will never inline with basic human values for the basic principle in monotheism highlighted above simply doesn't exist. Islamists actually believe that they can "convert" people – by which they mean indoctrinate people into accepting their view of the world. God guiding people? Well that is not guidance…it's indoctrination.

Islam is ultimately very humanitarian and libertarian if defined by the principles stipulated in the Quran. However, you must understand that those who call themselves "muslim" dont only follow the Quran – they follow 300+ year old oral history as well. This is where all your stoning and veiling and whatnot comes from.

Different "muslims" (eg sunni vs shia) have different collections of oral history and that's why they are always fighting and can never reconcile. They will never stop believing in these oral history, myth, legend and lies for the simple reason that without it, Islam as a "religion"/doctrine doesnt exist.

The world of the people who call themselves "believers" (arabic: muslim) is in the dark ages.

Serves them right.

They have nobody to blame but themselves.

Islam in Malaysia

The intense levels of Islamic hatred emanating from this country. I have been writing about this for years at my own site. The Gaza 'aid' flotilla, which happened in 2010, not 2009, got an enormous amount of press here in the government-run media here in Malaysia…media that is licensed and in truth essentially owned by the Malaysian government. They took the opportunity to demonise Israel and laud the jihadists on the flotilla itself at every opportunity. The nine Malaysians who themselves were onboard the flotilla, and are lionised as national heroes, were greeted upon their arrival here in KL by no less than the Malaysian Prime Minister himself (Najib).

Najib's country, his government, clerics, media and educational arms clamor and shriek for another holocaust, for the wholesale removal if not slaughter of Jews. And the kufr, dhimmified world turns a deaf ear and a blind eye.

Malaysia, lest we forget, is also the home of some of Southeast Asia's most dangerous and lethal terrorists, such as Noordin Top and Azahari Husin. These men who both at one time taught at government-run universities were behind the Bali bombings and a number of other deadly attacks on infidels in Indonesia. After these monsters finally reached room temperature, the bodies were shipped to their homeland of Malaysia for a hero's sendoff before huge fawning crowds, their Malaysian families intensely proud of their relative's deeds.

Malaysian muslims has been suppressing and discriminating minority, ethnic chinese and indian, since the independence of Malaysia. I am glad to know that americans are getting to know the true colour of malaysian muslims who are mostly ethnic malay. Muslims are the cancer of the world. Those malaysian muslim leaders are taliban in suit. So, don't be fooled by their appearances.

Did Obama take any of this into consideration before declaring Malaysia to be a great 'friend, ally and partner' of his country the United States?

Malaysian Experts on Islam: Wearing Symbols of Other Religions is Badwrong

Posted: 19 Jul 2010 03:29 AM PDT

From The Star 19 July 2010:

Football jerseys Muslims should not wear

KOSMO! carried a report about Muslims who wittingly or unwittingly wear football jerseys which display images of crosses, liquor brands and devils.

Johor Religious Council adviser Datuk Nooh Gadot said wearing such jerseys were forbidden in Islam.

"It is as if Muslims are worshipping and exalting the symbols of other religions. Islam does not compromise on this matter, regardless of whether it is worn for fun, fashion or sport," he said.

Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria agreed with Nooh and said although Islam did not forbid its followers from participating in sports or dressing up, it has to be done within the boundaries of Islamic law.

Among the football teams whose crests carry images of the cross are Brazil, Portugal, Serbia, Barcelona and Norway, while Manchester United carries the "Red Devil" slogan on its team crest.

I suppose this means that Muslim citizens of the UK, Denmark, Finland, Jamaica, Switzerland and so on can no longer bear their country's flag.

Crusader symbol!!!

Also based on the same principle, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus and so on should no longer wear clothing with the Malaysian flag on it, as the flag includes the Islamic crescent. The same goes for Singaporeans. Ironically, despite living in the most populous Muslim nation in the world, non-Muslim Indonesians have no problem here as their flag is religiously neutral.

All non-Muslims should also immediately quit the Red Crescent Society, as serving in it involves wearing a symbol of a religion other than their own. Quit worshiping that Bulan Sabit Merah first aid kit, blasphemers!

Are you a Muslim? Do you live on planet Earth or in this universe? Quickly, Johor Religious Council adviser Datuk Nooh Gadot insists that you emigrate to another dimension in order to avoid being associated with the constellation known as the Southern Cross!

Muslim gamers must from now on avoid all health packs as these are usually represented by a cross symbol. The preferred tactic for making it through Left 4 Dead is now to just run madly through the level and hope computer-controlled hunting rifle equipped Zoey gets eaten first.

Players of RPGs cannot add to their stats as this involves a '+' symbol that looks like a cross, and by all means avoid those Paladins, Clerics, Priests, Shamans, Necromancers, and any equipment with a cross or Yin-Yang symbol on it! To cast Holy Bolt is to exalt a flaming magical cross like some skeleton-blasting infidel!

(Wait, can you even use the word 'exalt'? The second letter is a little cross! And you'd better not use unbeliever fonts like Comic Sans because the t is replaced by yet another Christian symbol! DON'T GO OPEN MICROSOFT WORD TO TEST IT, IT IS NOT COMPROMISE-ABLE!)

And most egregriously, those who play Team Fortress 2 must never be Medics or be healed by one, as this involves a guy with a cross on his uniform shooting out little crosses at the wounded teammate in order to fill his little cross-shaped healthbar - the worst combo worshipping-and-exalting-the-symbols-of-other-religions offence possible! Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria will personally dominate you with only taunt kills if you do not comply!

PS. See also previous examples of similar mentality, only worse – applying it to members of those countries' teams!

A Weekend of Losses

Posted: 18 Jul 2010 10:16 PM PDT

We seem to have suffered a number of losses this weekend :(

I didn't know blogger Dalilah Tamrin (pictured on right) personally, but was sad to hear of her passing :( Al-Fatihah.

Also passed on: Hasmuzair Hassan, a young PKR activist. A fatal road accident leaves behind a homemaker widow with three children ages 1-6 :(

Any donations can be made to said widow, Nazylinda Abdullah, AMbank – 0040024033611.

There is also a Majlis Tahlil for him this Thursday, 22nd July, 5pm, at the PKR HQ (2nd floor) in Merchant Square, near Tropicana.

Some background below, Al-Fatihah.

Al-Fatihah..
