FRENCH NIQAB BAN

Dear Monsieur Sarkozy

BY SHELINA ZAHRA JANMOHAMED, MAY 24, 2010

Dear Monsieur Sarkozy: I have never in my life wanted to wear a niqab or a burqa, but I do want to wear one now, thanks to you. Perhaps it's something to do with being British, and doing the opposite of whatever the French want to do. I might even fashion my new niqab out of a Union Jack and 'invade' French soil via Eurostar, a cup of nice English breakfast tea and a traditional buttery scone with home-made jam. Or maybe it's to do with the fact that I'm a woman, and no man is going to tell me what to wear, (except maybe Gok Wan) and no politician is going to determine how I dress.
That's not your job, is it? Don't you have other stuff to worry about – like the economic recession, climate change or unemployment levels? I know that you are worried about the reputation that French women have for beauty and glamour in the world, and you don't want your lovelies to be covered up. However, since you are the global fashion capital, there are probably other more lucrative ways to solve the problem: perhaps a Chanel niqab, or a Louis Vuitton burqa with matching shoes and handbag?
That's not your job, is it? Don't you have other stuff to worry about – like the economic recession, climate change or unemployment levels? I know that you are worried about the reputation that French women have for beauty and glamour in the world, and you don't want your lovelies to be covered up. However, since you are the global fashion capital, there are probably other more lucrative ways to solve the problem: perhaps a Chanel niqab, or a Louis Vuitton burqa with matching shoes and handbag?

You might think that change is bad, and moving France into the 21st century is a bad thing too – you know, with things like equality of rights and freedom. Oh, hold on. You guys are supposed to have that already aren't you?

I understand your anxiety about giving women the right to make their own choices, and run their own lives, wear the clothes they want. It's all a bit well, modern, isn't it? And you can't let Muslim women just get on with their lives exercising self-determination and autonomy, can you?

Actually, I'm wrong to say that you don't like change – after all you altered the French constitution so that you could make the first ever presidential speech in the Palace of Versailles. Really pleased that you focused the historic occasion on women in veils. All 367 of them. You might want to take note of President Obama's words – who's a bit more popular than you: it's up to Muslim women to decide what they wear.

So you've said that these poor women are oppressed and that the niqab is incompatible with French values. I imagine you and your mates must have been waiting for all those feminists and civil rights activists to stop banging on about the 40,000 French women who are violently abused by their partners every year, and the 1 in 3 that are raped. Did you explain to them that banning the burqa is a priority above all else, because it is about defending the values of the Republic. Banning will lead to freedom and equality. And fraternite is about brotherhood, so women don't count anyway.

Your latest proposal to fine husbands whose wives wear the niqab or even send them to jail for a year, could prove very handy, merci beaucoup. Women who want to get rid of their pesky husbands just need to cover their visages, and 'bam!', off he goes out of her life for a bit of porridge.

So why do you dislike it so much when women cover their faces? Is it because you want to look at other people's wives? After all, French presidents do have a reputation for a roving eye. Well, a bit more than just the eyes roving, eh? I noticed that you bonded with President Berlusconi over your shared interest in philanthropy philandering.

Seeing as you know exactly who these veiled women are, perhaps you could just ring them up and ask them nicely to stop wearing the niqab? You know, like a favour to the president.

Or if you want to be a little more classy in your request you could send each of them a personalised letter a la Queen (did you see how I used my 'A' Level French in that sentence? Impressed aren't you). You could even use a similar tone to her letters to those who've reached 100 years old: "Thank you for your contribution and presence so far, but I think you may not be around for much longer."

We should take a moment to be serious – although to be fair it is a bit hard to take you seriously when you feel scared of an itsy bitsy teeny weeny bit of cloth. When it comes to security, Muslim women are generally happy to comply with checks. If you are worried about integration then these women should be included, rather than excluded. And there is one point we agree on – there are indeed women who are forced to cover up through fear and convention. You're not helping them, because you're imprisoning them at home and reducing their engagement with the world around them – the world that you say will make their lives better. It's a case of two men fighting to oppress women. Monsieur Sarkozy, your face should be red with shame.

Which brings me to my final point and what to do about your face – I think I have a good suggestion of what you can do with any unused stocks of niqabs and burqas. Just place the cloth over your face and tie the ends around the back of your head to cover your face and voila! The world will become a better place for everyone else. Come to think of it, you might need two of them. You are a politician after all,

Yours,
Shelina Zahra Janmohamed, from behind my Union Jack niqab which I am wearing in temporary protest

France's First Lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy – Latest Nude Pics vs why Mr Sarkozy ban the burqa from France?

It's always struck me that French President Nicolas Sarkozy knew what he was getting into when he married Carla Bruni. It is either pure stupidity or blind lust. There's something almost admirable about Carla's refusal to be embarrassed by her extensive sexual past, and her two decades of bohemian life. Carla never lied about who she was or what she did – and I, for one, appreciate that. She understands that once a whore, always a whore. Just that there higher level and lower whores. The highest level ones go with Presidents and Prime Ministers.

When she was a model, Carla posed nude many, many times. And before she even met Sarkozy, she had a relationship with a married man, Raphael Enthoven. When they broke up, apparently Raphael still had many photographs and videos of Carla – many of them nudes, or perhaps even a few sex tapes. What to do with a sex tape of yourself with an ex? Raphael decided to hand these items over to his brother, Julien. He must have announced to the world when he did this.

Julien's Paris apartment was just burgled – and the thieves got away with the photographs and the sex tapes. Police are investigating, but people feel strongly that sometime soon, a Carla Bruni sex tape will be leaked. It is strange that the burglar only interest is the sex items, and even stranger that the burglar knew the tape is with Julien.

WHY MR SARKOZY BAN THE BURQA FROM FRANCE?HE WANT THE MUSLIM GIRLS TO BE LIKEYASMINE LATIFFE (29-YEAR-OLD BORN IN PARIS, FRANCE) IS A FRENCH ACTRESS

DON'T BAN THE BURQA, QUESTION ITNIKHAT KAZMI

SHOULD MR SARKOZY BAN THE BURQA FROM FRANCE? DEFINITELY NOT. BECAUSE BANS ARE UNDEMOCRATIC AND AN UNQUALIFIED ATTACK ON INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM. SHOULD WE HOWEVER USE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO QUESTION THE EFFICACY OF THE BURQA, THE CHADOR, THE VEIL OR WHAT YOU WILL? DEFINITELY YES. SPECIALLY SINCE THE BURQA ISN'T JUST ANOTHER PIECE OF CLOTH BUT HAS A LOT OF IDEOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL CONNOTATIONS TO IT. THE FRENCH PRESIDENT HIMSELF HAS TERMED IT A SYMBOL OF SUBSERVIENCE WHICH HAS NO PLACE IN A SECULAR STATE.
DOESN'T IT HAVE RELIGIOUS CONNOTATIONS, YOU MAY ALSO ASK? BUT HEY, JUST LET'S KEEP RELIGION OUT OF THIS. PRIMARILY BECAUSE, AS SCHOLARS POINT OUT, THE QURAN MAKES A MENTION OF MODESTY RATHER THAN THE WORD 'BURQA' WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN'S APPAREL. THE VEIL HAS MORE A CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE IN ISLAM THAN A THEOLOGICAL ONE. THE QURAN CATEGORICALLY MENTIONS THAT "THE BEST GARMENT IS THE GARMENT OF RIGHTEOUSNESS." (7:26) AND RIGTHEOUSNESS MAY OR MAY NOT BE INTERPRETED AS THE BURQA, DEPENDING ON THE PERSONAL CHOICE OF THE PERSON.
TALKING SPECIFICALLY OF A DRESS CODE, THE TEXT HOLDS 'CHASTITY' AS MANDATORY, BOTH FOR MEN AND FOR WOMEN. A TRANSLATION OF THE VERSES BY DR RASHAD KHALIFA'S STATES: "TELL THE BELIEVEING MEN THEY SHALL SUBDUE THEIR EYES (AND NOT STARE AT THE WOMEN), AND MAINTAIN THEIR CHASTITY. AND TELL THE BELIEVING WOMEN TO SUBDUE THEIR EYES AND MAINTAIN THEIR CHASTITY."
NOW CHASTITY IS DEFINED AS A CONDITION OR QUALITY OF BEING PURE OR CHASTE. AND RIGHTEOUSNESS IS RELATED TO ETHICAL CONDUCT. NEITHER OF THESE TERMS HAVE A SARTORIAL CONNECTION, HAVING MORE TO DO TO WITH STATES OF MIND AND STYLES OF BEHAVIOUR, RATHER THAN A PIECE OF CLOTHING. WHILE THE BURQA HAS FOUND FERVENT ADVOCATES AMONGST ITS USERS, THERE HAVE BEEN STRONG CRIES AGAINST ITS PROLIFERATION IN A PROGRESSIVE, MODERN WORLD WHICH IS FAST MOVING TOWARDS GENDER EQUALITY. IN AN AGE WHEN MEN AND WOMEN ARE PERCEIVED AS EQUAL, WHAT EXACTLY IS THE ROLE OF THE BURQA WHICH WELL AND TRULY WRAPS THE WOMAN IN A CLOAK OF INVISIBILITY. UNDERSTANDABLY, THERE HAVE BEEN RADICAL FEMINIST PROTESTS AGAINST THE VEIL FROM THE ARAB WORLD ITSELF. PROMINENT AMONGST THEM BEING THE VOICE OF NAWAL EL SA'ADAWI, FEMINIST AND INTELLECTUAL, WHO SEES THE MOVEMENT FOR THE VEIL AS JUST ANOTHER OFFSHOOT OF THE "THE AGE-OLD PATRIARCHAL STRUGGLE OVER WOMEN'S HEADS, THE FEAR THAT THEY MIGHT BEGIN TO THINK AND THROW OFF THE BONDS OF SLAVERY, OF AN INFERIORITY ENFORCED ON THEM IN ALL RELIGIONS AND IN ALL SOCIETIES…THIS WAS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THEIR STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN MEN'S CONTROL OVER WOMEN, MEN'S CONTROL OVER THEIR MINDS. THIS WAS ABOVE ALL THE DESIRE OF ISLAMIC FUNDAMENTALISTS TO PRESERVE THE POLITICAL POWER THEY EXERCISE OVER SOCIETY."
WHILE WE WOULD NOT LIKE TO TAKE SUCH A STRIDENT POSITION AGAINST IT, SPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES FROM FREE WILL, WE WOULD LIKE TO WONDER WHY IT IS IMPORTANT FOR WOMEN TO HIDE THEMSELVES WHEN IT IS POSSIBLE TO DRESS DECENTLY, BEHAVE MODESTLY, MAINTAIN CHASTITY AND BE RIGHTEOUS WITHOUT THE VEIL TOO. MOREOVER, IN SOCIETIES — AND CIRCUMSTANCES — WHERE WOMEN FEEL IT IS EASIER FOR THEM TO MAINTAIN CHASTITY MORE THAN THE MEN, ISN'T IT TIME TO ABANDON THE VEIL EVEN MORE. FOR ANY PREVENTION AGAINST CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN DOES NOT LIE IN HIDING WOMEN FROM UNTRUSTWORTHY MEN. THE CURE LIES IN MOVING TOWARDS A MORE GENDER SENSITIVE SOCIETY WHICH IS ONLY POSSIBLE IF MEN STOP LOOKING AT WOMEN AS OBJECTS OF GRATIFICATION. A BURQA IS NO GUARANTEE FOR THAT. A HEALTHIER INTERMINGLING OF THE SEXES AND A MORE OPEN SOCIETY ARE THE ONLY SUREFIRE WAY OF ENSURING BOTH MODESTY AND EQUALITY.
BUT BANS SURELY ARE NOT THE WAY OUT MR SARKOZY. SPECIALLY NOT IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.

Siapa tolak Shamsul masuk tasek?

Posted: 26 May 2010 09:33 AM PDT

Semalam kita bertikam lidah berkenaan komen Husin mengenai Ketua Pemuda UMNO masuk askar.

Terus dia beritahu Maharaja dengan banngganya, "Your Majesty, my youth leader is the person that swam across."

"Berani ...", Maharaja puji.

Shamsul Akin pun selamat berenang.

Lawanya orangnya macam bintang filem Katarina Kaif. Cuma terlalu tinggi untuknya.

"Tidak Maharaja," Shamsul beritahu.

"Awak mahu wang emas dan harta karun? Cakaplah apa awak mahu saya akan beri?" Maharaja tanya lagi.

"Tidak juga, Maharaja"

"Cakap apa pula kamu mahu? Tanah? Saham?" desak Maharaja.

"Saya mahu tahu satu saja, Maharaja," kata Shamsul.

"Apa dia?"

Wow! Ingatkan berani.

Finally... RM6.5mil compensation for Orang Asli

Posted: 26 May 2010 08:35 AM PDT

After a 15-year legal battle, 26 families of a Temuan tribe in Selangor have obtained RM6.5 million in compensation for their native customary land which was seized to build a highway to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Sagong Tasi, 78 and six others - two of whom have since died - had filed a suit against the federal government, the then BN-led Selangor government, Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and contractor United Engineers Malaysia Bhd (UEM).

Judi Bola: Pencacai2 Terkial2 Nak Pertahan Najib/UMNO

Posted: 26 May 2010 09:07 AM PDT

"The Government has made it really clear that Muslims are not in any way allowed to bet with us. So my question is why are these groups so unhappy," he told Malaysian reporters in London.

Antaranya:
• Pool Betting Act
• Betting Act
• Lotteries Act
• Common Gaming Houses Act
• Racing (Totalisator Board) Act
• Racing Clubs (Public Sweepstakes) Act

Setahu saya, lesen-lesen judi dikeluarkan mengikut peruntukan undang-undang.

Pokoknya, pencacai-pencacai UMNO/Najib semuanya dah jadi macam lipas kudung.

Problem betul bila orang macam GM Tak Ori dah jadi pengikut Islam UMNO ala Khawarij. Islam pun dia cuba putar belit.

JAIS & Mufti of Selangor - silent on sports betting

Posted: 26 May 2010 05:37 AM PDT

Malaysiakini - Sports betting: 'Why are Jais and muftis silent?' - extract follows:

Shah Alam parliamentarian Khalid Samad hit out at the Selangor religious affairs department (Jais) and Selangor mufti Tamyes Abdul Wahid for being silent over the soccer betting license recently issued to the Berjaya Group courtesy of the federal government.

Their silence, Khalid said at a press conference in Shah Alam today, runs contrary to their earlier hardline and very vocal stand against the use of the term 'Allah' by non-Muslims.

Life's a bitch, ain't it, especially for JAIS and the Selangor Mufti wakakaka.

While I wouldn't go to the extent of banning sports betting, I certainly wouldn't promote it either. Thus, if it hasn't gotten off the ground, then don't approve it.

And who benefits if it does get approve, as it has already been!

Dear Vincent Tan of course - the dear close confidante of UMNO bigwigs.

Hmmm, I wonder what prompted RPK M2Day to allege that Ibrahim Ali owns shares in Ascot Sports, the gambling company owned by Vincent Tan.

Anway, Utusan Malaysia's Pak Kadir Yassin claimed that because Vincent Tan will benefit from the approval of football betting by as much as RM525 million, it proves that government largesse has gone mainly to Chinese – therefore he wants the government to give a fairer deal to the Malays, Aborigines and get this one (considering it's coming from an UMNO person, hope you don't puke) Indians.

Pak Kadir has decided that from now on the once-marginalised-alone Indians (but good reliable BN voters) should have some company, namely the marginalised Malays and the marginalised everyone …

… except those Chinese who have been the principal ethnic group to benefit from government largesse.

What? You don't believe him? Look at Vincent Tan!

Vincent Tan is typical of most Chinese, and most Chinese are like Vincent Tan, meaning they like him are blooming rich and powerful (mate of Dr Mahathir and various other PMs and Ministers – as we all know, most Chinese have PMs and Ministers as mates).

Anyway, once I wrote an article about the insidious cancer of gambling for CPI – see A disease deadlier than AIDS - I'll post an expanded version one day.

I don't suppose the Mufti of Selangor (and what about Mufti of Perak?) and JAIS would like to read my article?

Wakakaka – JAIS won't allow Christians to use the 'Allah' word but they closing one eye to gambling on football.

Introduction
Albeit sex is mostly viewed as a biological urge, it has a socio-cultural dimension as well. The tribal society regulates, and maintains sexual behaviour as a process of socialization through norms, and values in the name of sanction, and avoidance. Consequently, sexual bonds, and incest have existed as universal practices of human societies, and tribals in particular, through different social institutions such as, marriage, family, and kinship.
Anthropology testifies that variations exist between different cultural groups in their patterns of sexual behaviour. Every society must control potentially disruptive sexual behaviour through some systems. But it is clear that effective control can be achieved in diverse ways. Behaviour which is discouraged in one society may be tolerated in a second, and encouraged in a third. Also, substantial differences may exist between subgroups within a society (Gebhard 1971:206). The very existences of cultural practices like monogamy, polygamy, joking relationship, preferential marriage, sororate, levirate, etc are based on sexual interactions. The sexual privilege, avoidance, taboo, and incest among the members have been helping the tribals to sustain their discipline, continuity, and existence.

An Overview of the Tribal Sexuality
The most common pattern noted in the literature is to permit joking within the same generation, sometimes with alternate generations and only rarely between contiguous generations. Radcliffe-Brown regards the joking relationship as a technique of resolving problems inherent in the social structure and an alternative to extreme respect or avoidance. He says that: "a relation between two persons in which one is by custom permitted, and in some instances required, to tease or make fun of the other, who in turn is required to take no offence". He further says that: "the joking relationship between affinal relatives close in age is that sexuality is spoken about or expressed in gestures which seems to anticipate a future sex relationship" (Radcliffe-Brown 1952:90-104). While the ethnographic literature frequently makes mention of joking, sexual license, or obligations between specified members of a society, among the Luguru of Tanganyika all three of these behavior patterns are to be found in a relationship. For example, "a man may jokingly grab a woman's cloth and attempt to disrobe her, and a good-natured tug-of-war or wrestling may result. A woman may deride a man about his lack of sexual prowess, and imply that he is sterile or impotent. He may respond with an invitation to accompany her in order to demonstrate his virility. The fact that a man is married does not prohibit him from indulging in a jesting conversation with sexual overtones, particularly with unmarried woman. However, it is considered bad form for a man to make suggestive or obscene remarks to a married woman, unless her husband is present" (Christensen 1963:1316).

According to Eggan (1937:75) avoidance and joking were alternative solutions for resolving what could potentially be serious conflicts between kinsmen. "Avoidance and respect were likely to occur between different generations, with joking and license permitted between members of the same generation where a conflict situation is inevitable. He suggested that because of the potential for conflict, jokes, satire, and sexual play could be expected to be greatest between siblings-in-law". It is just opposite in the case of incest behaviour. Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines incest as: "sexual intercourse between persons so closely related that they are forbidden by law to marry" (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary). Incest rules are variable between cultures. Murdock observes that these variables are correlated with social institutions (cit.Bagley 1969:506). For Radcliffe-Brown (1950:69) incest is "properly speaking the sin or crime of sexual intimacy between immediate relatives within the family, father and daughter, mother and son, brother and sister". Rattray (1929) had seen it as, "eating of one's own blood".
Different people feel differently about the place of their sexual intercourse. One of the reasons for the origin of youth dormitories in tribal societies (Ex. The Muria Ghonds of Madhya Pradesh) is that the parents do not want to be witnessed by their children during their sexual intercourse at home. While the Muria Ghonds juveniles have their sexual urge fulfilled in the youth dormitories. After the weaning has effected, The Muduvars, and the Malai Malasars children sleep in bachelor or, young maiden halls respectively, and thus, the parents are undisturbed during nights in their houses (Ehrenfels 1952:203).

All that talk about first impression and lasting ones… well, that's not all jazz you know. Whoever said it sure knew what they meant. And guess what, if you want to seduce someone, you've got to do more than just dress and speak the role, you have a secret yet powerful tool at easy disposal, your eyes. Making the right eye contact and giving the right signals via your eyes to the person you are interested in means about 50 per cent of your work done. The truth is that most of the communication that occurs between two people who are interested in each other is wordless, it's all about the looks.

readmore Indian women have a certain allure to them, a sultry exotic sex appeal. You just know that once you get them in private, they let loose. Hot, sexy
Even the experts will vouch for this. In fact, communication and body language counsellors opine that the basic components of eye behaviour are easy to master once a person knows how they work. So, if you want to ensure that you always use your eyes fluently and with dazzling effect, here are four simple steps you need to follow.

In the case of Eskimos, the children learn of sex matters from their family itself, as soon as they are able to form ideas. Since they live in small dwellings, it is a matter of observation that all the family functions including sex between parents or, other elderly couples being conducted right before their eyes (Garber 1935:216). It is also very interesting to quote here the observation made by Garber (1935:216): "I found several instances in which girl's mother, by physical manipulation, prepared her small daughter for the process of copulation in order that complete satisfaction might be assured to the prospective husband".
Some tribals, specially the Chenchus of Andhra Pradesh, have sexual intercourse in day time since, they feel that intercourse at night lead to the birth of blind child. Also, they have sex in deep forest area as, they believe that their home is not a hygienic place to have sex (Haimendorf 1943). The Maasai of Eastern Africa are of the opinion that sex in day time can be fatal (Rouse 2002:11).
The pastoral Maasai, inhabit the savannah borderland between Kenya and Tanzania in Africa permitted their young males to have sex with immature girls. Talle (2007:351), in an article, has reported that: "This license has its rationale within a cultural logic and structural framing of hierarchically organized age and gender categories that give precedence to male seniority and male power (Jacobs 1965; Galaty 1977; Spencer 1988). This article argues that sexual prohibitions and licenses-the one implicating the other-may be fruitfully analyzed as part of 'serious games' (Ortner 1996), where subjects are positioned in shifting contexts of equality and inequality, power and hierarchy. Throughout their life cycles and in their practical lives, Maasai subjects participate in several sexual 'games', which are deeply social practices drawing people into wide and intense webs of interaction and sociality. Sexual relations, moreover, cannot be analyzed in isolation from other social relations or from the realm of economics or politics (Caplan 1987; Ortner and Whitehead 1981; Herdt 1999)".
All sex activities of the Kadars of Cochin are some what different since, they are confined to excursions into the forest during day time. The restrictions therefore mould not only sex-habits as such, but determine also the daily routine of all married people (Ehrenfels 1952:202 and Coon 1972:158). Further, their ordinary marital sex life is also quite interesting. A husband of women would ask his wife to go, and collect firewood in the forest, either in the morning or, late afternoon. She, naturally, will accept it as the appropriate way The wife will take this as just the correct form of approach to which she will generally respond willingly, unless contemplating divorce or expecting menstruation very soon. If the two have expressed their intention to "collect firewood", no other Kadan with the least common sense and decency in him would ever dream of accompanying them, though Kadar go for real collection expeditions generally in somewhat bigger groups to the forest. Very small babies will be taken along, by the mother, and put under a thick shrub or bamboo bush, before she lies down to unite with her husband. A certain risk for the baby is here undoubtedly involved, for jackal, hyaena, panther and tiger are more likely to snatch away a baby lying alone at some distance from its parents, than to attack these themselves but, the Kadars yet to express a fear about it (Ehrenfels 1952:203). The Kadars also believe that houses, leaf-shelters or, caves are too small, and too over crowded, and too open as to allow any enjoyable intimacy. Moreover, sexual intercourse must not take place in the presence of children (Ehrenfels 1952:203). The Native American tribe, Hopi insists that sex should take place indoors while, the Witotos, another Native American tribe insists that sex should take place outside their dwelling unit.
Even frequency of intercourse is related to cultural norms. The Keraki of New Guinea are reported to have intercourse on an average, once a week. The Aranda of Australia have sex three to five times a day; and the Chagga of Eastern Africa are alleged to manage ten sex episodes in a single night (Rouse 2002:11).
The Tre-ba of Tibet (www.buzzle.com), and the Todas of Nilgiris (Rivers 1906) are polyandrous, where all brothers in a family marry the 'same wife'. Among the Australian aborigines (Yolngu, and Gidjangali), old men are regarded as intelligent and powerful religiously and go on adding wives, until they die, through the practice of Polygyny. The Yolngu practice mother-in-law bestowal, and the Gidjangali practice wife's bestowal in their matrimonial alliances. Marriage of men is delayed by their induction into the religious life. This way of acquiring mate has resulted in sexual intercourse between unmarried men, and married women in dense forest during their foraging activities (Keen 1982: 621). Extramarital relations are allowed among the infertile Chenchus of A.P., in the hope of proving their fertility (Meera Guntupalli and Chenchelgudem 2004:256,258).
The Caddo, a Native American tribe permitted their women to accept gifts from men, and allowed them to engage in sex relations with different men with no repercussions (www.buzzle.com). The Calusa, also a Native American tribe was popular for their marriages among the siblings within the family (www.buzzle.com). Another Native American tribe, the Chickasaw allowed their men to have sex with all of his wife's sisters (www.buzzle.com). Among the Haida, Native American tribe, an unmarried girl may have sexual relations with her male cross-cousins on the mother's side; and she eventually marries one of them (Murdock 1934: 365-367).
The case of the Native American Eskimos, it has been some what different since, they have the practice of wife's hospitality (including sex), without her consent. They also have a tradition of exchanging their wives, temporarily (Garber 1935:225; Spencer et al. 1977:88, 94). Since the Shamans are very powerful among them, who can demand either sexual relations with his patient's wife or, the wife herself, if he has affected a cure (Spencer et al. 1977:88, 94). Garber (1935:219) reported that: "the Yukon and Kuskokwim Delta region Eskimos the young hunter takes the girl to his camp and lives with her in a state of trial marriage for a year. If children are begotten, proving the girl's fecundity, the marriage is thereby consummated. But if the girl fails to become pregnant with child she is returned to her parents". He also said that: "the birth of a child out of wedlock is considered very improper, and usually means a severe scolding from the parents. But a girl who has given birth prenuptially is by no means disbarred as a candidate for marriage. In fact, her fecundity is thereby proven, and since children represent the criterion of a happy marriage she has no particular difficulty in finding a husband. It is in reality a greater crime for a girl to be barren than to have children out of wedlock. A girl who is barren is wanted by no man. She may become the second or third wife of a man, but because of her inability to bear children she will have all the menial tasks about the household to perform" (Garber 1935:218).
Similar cases reveal the peculiar sex behaviour and the status of women, where whom being deemed as sex objects or, symbols. Thus, Linton (1939:138, 164-165) wrote that the Marquesan woman was mainly a sexual object; she had to concentrate on the development of sexual techniques and the maintenance of certain sexual attributes, which leave little time for the tenderness that must be given to children. He further claimed that the Marquesan women did not nurse offspring but spoon fed them in a rather cruel fashion, so as not to ruin the appearance of their breasts.
The male circumcision is not unpopular but, treated as a cross-cultural oddity is a venerable Western tradition. Scholars, anthropologists in particular, have looked it as a cultural practice (Ex. Ashley-Montagu 1937, Singer and DeSole 1967, Firth 1936, Rubel et al. 1971, Hogbin 1970, Lewis 1980, Ucko 1969, Brewster 1919, Brown 1921, and Spencer and Gillen 1899), and most of them believed that such practices were fraught with the ethnocentric perils of revulsion, admiration, and exoticism. Female circumcision, partial or, total cutting away of the external female genitalia, has been practiced for centuries in parts of Africa, generally as one element of a rite of passage preparing young girls for womanhood and marriage. Often performed without anesthetic under septic conditions by lay practitioners with little or no knowledge of human anatomy or medicine, female circumcision can cause death or permanent health problems as well as severe pain. Despite these grave risks, its practitioners look it as an integral part of their cultural and ethnic identity, and some perceive it as a religious obligation. Female circumcision is currently practiced in at least 28 countries across the centre of Africa north of equator; it is not found in southern Africa or in the Arabic-speaking nations of North Africa, with the exception of Egypt. Female circumcision occurs among Muslims, Christians, animists and one Jewish sect, although no religion requires it (Althaus 1997). However, Gordon (1991) had documented cases of female circumcision and genital operations in Egypt and Sudan. What these concerns might be brings us to he most venerated explanation for mutilation operations – the rites of passage. In this constriction, the operation serves as a marker of the movement from child to adult, in which the similarity between male and female is removed, permitting a ritual differentiation of the sexes (Vann Gennep 1960 (1908):72).
There are three types of genital excision, although practices vary widely. In the first type, clitoridectomy, part or the entire clitoris is amputed, while in the second (often referred to as excision), both the clitoris and the labia minora are removed. Inflation, the third type, is the most severe. After excision of the clitoris and the labia minora, the labia majora are cut or scraped away to create raw surfaces, which are held in contact until they heal either by stitching the edges of the wound or by tying the legs together. As the wound heals, scar tissues joins the labia and covers the urethra and most of the vaginal orifice, leaving an opening that may be as small as a match stick for the passage of urine and menstrual blood (Reddy and Chandrasekaran 2002:155). While the practice of male circumcision is acclaimed as more hygienic, female circumcision (Althaus 1997) is creating lot of problems like frequent urinary infections, severe pain during sexual intercourse, and maternal mortality for females, for instance two African tribes namely, Potok, and Yoruba who have the habit of clitoridectomy (www.buzzle.com). Thus, Beidelman (1968) rightly said: "a man's sexuality (as perpetuator of a lineage, but also as a husband and father within a household) and a woman's fertility (as wife and mother to a lineage, but also as wife and mother in her own household) carry very wide and complex implications".
In view of this, Beidelman (1968) also reported that: "A Nuer woman observes prohibitions after her marriage. She may start to wear a goatskin or sheepskin apron but she is not obliged to do so until she gives birth to her first child. Evans-Pritchard states in published correspondence to Fischer: Till marriage girls are naked. After marriage they wear a special little skirt, but may take it off when they please till they have had a child. After the birth of a child only their husbands see them naked in the privacy of a hut when the spouses sleep together". After the birth of a child no woman goes naked in public again (Fischer 1964:63 and Evans-Pritchard I940:30)". The same author wrote another sex-behaviour of Nuer women during initiation: "They drink beer and leap about behind the bullocks and there is a lot of horseplay. The women folk seize the penises of members of their husband's age-set, the father of an initiated boy especially being subject to this treatment. They tie cord to the penises of the men and pull them while the men retaliate by tugging at the skin aprons of the wives of their age-mates. A man of the age-set of the father of an initiate will lift up the apron of his wife (the boy's mother) and will utter a ceremonial cry into her vagina" Beidelman (1968).
The Nuer has rules of food abstinence between feuding groups, and between affines. It associates certain forms of sexuality with the ingestion of food, a symbolic connection made in a great many societies (Beidelman 1968). This relation is clearly shown by Evans-Pritchard: A youth is particularly careful not to be seen eating by unrelated girls: 'If he is not making love to them, he may do so some time or to one of their relatives.' When I asked whether it would matter if your sisters saw you eating, the reply was, 'Do you make love to your sisters?' Food must never be mentioned in the presence of girls, and a man will endure severe hunger rather than let them know that he has not eaten for a long time. It is a strict rule of Nuer society that the sexes, unless they are close kin, avoid each other in the matter of food. Nuer does not go near persons of the other sex when they are eating. A man may mention food but not sexual matters before kinswomen, and he may mention sexual matters but not food before unrelated girls (1951:55; 1947:117). Even before a young man has started to look for a bride he will not generally eat with most senior men, unless they are kin, because one of them might become his father-in-law. Once he has asked for a girl's hand in marriage he may in no circumstances eat in her home, and the prohibition continues, sometimes greatly to his discomfort, until two or three children have been born, when it is relaxed by a formal ceremony if the parties are on good terms with one another.
Let us see some of the interesting features of homosexuality though; heterosexuality is more universal among the humankind. Evans-Pritchard (1970) has reported that male and female homosexual relationship seems to have common among the Azande. While discussing the sex and personality in the Marquesas, Kadiner (1939:219) has interpreted homosexuality as being a "supplementary activity, a form of making good a long-felt carving for a dependency which cannot be satisfied by the women".
The presence of proxy-fathers, and ghost-marriages among the Nuer of Africa are also worthy to note here. A Nuer marriage is considered incomplete till a child is born to it. Further, a man's name must continue in the lineage. If a man dies without male heirs, a kinsman ought to take wife in his name. Such a marriage is precarious marriage or ghost-marriage. The precarious husband acts as a true husband in the marriage ceremonies, habitation and domestic life. But, has the Nuer say, he is only 'kindling the fire' of his dead kinsman, 'who is the legal husband' (Evans-Pritchard 1960:108-109). This results in a system of proxy-fatherhood to a child, even though the 'same husband' is the real biological father of the child, importance is given in the Nuer society to the social father, on whose be half he has acted as 'the husband'.
The Onge of Little Anaman observes initiation ceremony, tanagire, for boys to initiate them into manhood. The elderly teach the initiated boys about all aspects of their culture including sex. The religion and sex is interrelated in the case of the Kurumans of Tamil Nadu. The deity, Virabadran's festival ends with a performance called, Kosavamma Kuthu, in which the young boys identify their girls, and indulge in sex. The marriage will be solemnized latter. The Todas of Nilgiris have two kinds of sex relationships; marriage, and mogthot or mogthoty. The institutionalized sexual alliance mogthot permits men to enter into a sexual relation with a woman of opposite sub-group with the permission of her husband (Sathyanarayana 2000: 212; Sudarsen 2005:19).
Conclusion
Human sexual behaviour, one of the fundamental activities of human being, is certainly divisive in nature. It was, and is generally considered to be a biological urge of Homo sapiens sapiens. But, it also has social, and cultural significances in the day-to-day human life. In that sense, an understanding of sexual behaviour is of potential utility to understand the other aspects of human behaviour. It has clearly disclosed in the forgone discussions, that all of the sexual behaviour of human being is existed as the part and parcel of culture, and society as well. Most of this sexuality, whether universal or local, has said to be still exists, and continued among the mankind through the process of socialization, and enculturation over time and space. In consequence, we conclude that sex-interactions determine the degree of relationship, status, obligation, role, and behaviour of members of each tribal society since, sexuality has been working as a system on the basis of sex, and sex norms, and values.

In 1995, Father Cyriac Karthikapally, a parish priest of Kurumbanadam church in the Changanacherry archdiocese, lured a 15-year old school-going girl to his bedroom. For the next two years, the priest entered into a sexual relationship with the minor girl that she gave birth to a female child on September 15, 1998.
The Changacherry police on Tuesday registered a case against Father Karthikapally for raping, abducting and compelling the victim for abortion. The police has submitted before the local judicial court a first information report against the priest under sections 315, 316 and 336 of the Indian Penal Code that deal with provisions on rape and abduction.
** In 1993, the dead body of 21-year old Sister Abhaya was flushed out from the well of St Pious X Convent, Kottayam. Six years of police investigations reached nowhere and in July this year the Central Bureau of Investigation closed the sensitive case as it failed to fix the liability of the young nun's murder. Church critics circulate two theories for Sr Abhaya's death. One, she was murdered when she refused the sexual advances of a priest or a bishop. Second, she was killed because she knew that some of her colleague nuns had sexual relationships with two Catholic priests — Fr Jose Putrukayal and Fr Thomas Kattoor.
While the Sister Abhaya case is closed forever, a popular Malayalam movie was released three weeks back on the incident. Titled Crime Fileand starring superstar Suresh Gopi, the film depicts the Church in bad light by portraying what many say "the real story" behind Sister Abhaya's murder.
** In 1998, Sr Jyothis of Sacred Heart Convent at Mukkom in Kozhikode district was found murdered in the convent's well. Investigations so far have made no headway, but the police suspect that sexual motive could have been the cause behind the murder.
Recently, Sister Jyothis's father, K M Jose filed a case in the Kerala high court pleading for a CBI investigation into his daughter's murder in the convent.
** Last month, a gang of students belonging to the Student Federation of India attacked Father Geo Pulickal, principal of the Catholic-run Nirmalagiri College at Koothuparamba in north Kerala. SFI students allege that the principal is a sodomite and subjected a college student to sodomy and two priests were involved in a ragging case in the college hostel. Posters depicting the priests and nuns in bad light appeared on the college campus.
The tug of war between the SFI activists and the Catholic church over the attack on Father Pulickal reached a flashpoint when Nirmalagiri College was closed last month and later re-opened after mediations between the Church officials and the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist.
Is the vow of celibacy that priests and nuns adopt to serve the Catholic church in Kerala becoming suspect? Why are increasing numbers of sex scandals involving the clergy coming up in the state?
Church leaders, especially those belonging to the Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala are upset as social groups are mounting protests for trying to protect priests like Father Karthikapally from the clutches of civil law.
But Catholic activists who have launched a movement against the church claim that cases of priests caught in sex crimes are increasing in the state. "It seems priests in Kerala are losing their faith and virginity. We know the names of many priests who deliberately fail to keep their sacred pledge of a celibate lifestyle," says Sebastian Vattamattam, secretary of Kottayam-based Vikas Institute that has raked up the sex scandal involving Father Cyriac Karthikapally.
"Priests are sinning against their church and the community. But their crimes have thrown up legal, ethical and moral issues for debate within the church and the catholic community," he said.
Vattamattom, a college professor in the Changanacherry archdiocese-run Saint Berchman's College, is one of the many active Catholics who have launched a movement against what they call "erring and immoral priests and nuns."
Critics like him cite many reasons why priests and nuns are stepping out of their pastoral and missionary duties to the forbidden paths. "All the modern priests are very educated and rich. They are exposed to the world and lured by the luxuries of the modern world. They are spiritually corrupt and indulge in all sorts of immoral activities," accuses Vattamattam.
Kurian Verghese, a Catholic activist in Kochi, who himself left priestly studies mid-way and became an engineer later, says the fault lies with the seminaries. "Seminaries where students are trained and moulded to become priests are old-fashioned. They are taught philosophy and theology of the old order without any freedom of thought or action," he points out.
"I left the seminary after five years because I felt suffocated. So I think once they are out of seminaries, the present generation of young priests are attracted by the outside world which they have never seen or experienced," Verghese says.
"I know many priests who drink and womanise regularly. But they still remain within the dioceses and pastoral ministry and serve the local people. Our social set-up is such that a priest giving up the cassock for marriage is a butt of ridicule," he said.
Therefore, he says, the best thing that the church should aim for is to encourage those "immoral priests" to get out of the church services and help them get married.
But Church officials point out that some of the sex scandals rocking the Catholic community in Kerala are "stray instances" and have been blown out of proportion by "some misguided catholic activists."
According to Bishop Thomas Chakiath of Ernakulam archdiocese, it is sad that "some vested interests have launched a smear campaign against the church basing their arguments on some stray incidents."
"Of course, there have been incidents in which priests were accused of disobeying the sacred order of celibacy. But it is improper to accuse that the church is plagued by sex scandals," he said.
Bishop Chakiath said often priests who indulge in immoral activities leave their pastoral job and embrace matrimony. "But these all are very rare instances and they do not mean that the church has lost its mission, unity and integrity," he asserted.
However, according to Professor M J George, a member of the action council that is now pursuing the Father Karthikapally case the gravest mistake within the church is that "it itself is the protector of criminal clergy."
George said when the Father Karthikapally sex scandal rocked the Changanacherry archdiocese, what the Archbishop did was to get him tried in the diocese's own tribunal, which "punished" him by removing him from the pastoral ministry and offering remuneration to the girl.
"The accused priest is still with the diocese. His residence is provided by the diocese and he is protected by the church while his daughter is growing up in an orphanage," George said.
Catholic activists claim in many dioceses across Kerala, many "clerical gangsters" have come up. "Our information is that Father Karthikapally used to take the minor girl to his priest friends in other parishes. They had actually formed a sex racket involving many girls," says Vattamattam.
But Changanacherry Archdiocese Chancellor Father Gregory Naduviledam refutes the charges levelled by the church pressure groups. "They are misguided activists who are acting with some vested interests against the church," he said.
As for Father Karthikapally sex case, he said, the diocesan tribunal decided to try the priest after the victim's parents approached Archbishop Joseph Powathil for a settlement on the case from the church side.
"In the tribunal the priest confessed to his crime. We found him guilty and punished him by relieving him of all pastoral duties. He is now living in a remote village without serving any parish or other diocesan institutes," Father Naduviledam said.
As to the accusation that the diocese did not take the case to the police, he said "it was not the duty of the church." "It was the duty of the offended party to approach the police. But the girl's parents instead wanted that the priest should be tried by the church tribunal only," Father Naduviledam added.
According to Father Paul Thelakkat, editor of Sathyadeepam, a popular Catholic weekly, "It is an unfair argument that the church has lost its image because one among thousands of its priests is involved in a sex scandal."
"In every religious society and community in the world, there are erring members. The Catholic church considers the rare instances of sex scandals in Kerala as insignificant," he asserted.
One of the first sex scandals that rocked the Kerala church was in the 1970s, that too in the Changanacherry diocese. A diocesan priest, Father Benedict entered into a sexual relationship with Mariakutty, a regular church-goer. But when their relationship began doing the rounds, Father Benedict allegedly killed Mariakutty.
Father Benedict was arrested and fought the case in many courts for years, but was later set free for want of sufficient evidence of murder.
Old timers recall when Father Benedict was acquitted and released, he was given a warm reception by the Changanacherry archdiocese.
"I think this is the fault with the church. It does not punish those priests who break their celibacy and seek immoral means of life. But the church is always eager to protect the clergy who are found guilty," says Joseph Punnen, a devout catholic who had launched a movement against Father Benedict in 1970s.

Suara Keadilan

Kerajaan Selangor digesa supaya mengkaji semula kedudukan pengarah Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor, Datuk Khusrin Munawi.

Dear Blogger / Media Friend,

On 18 February this year a disturbing video was uploaded onto YouTube by a concerned citizen. The video, shot at the A 'Famosa Resort in Melaka, showed an insentient tiger being forcefully postured to pose for a series of paid photo shoots.

Video : http://bit.ly/bMoRcm

The video, which recently made its rounds on Facebook and Twitter, caused an uproar particularly among Malaysian social media users.

As a result, these social media users mobilised their friends and followers online to write to the management of A 'Famosa Resort expressing their discontent and demanding explanation regarding the manner in which the tiger was treated. Letters were also sent to the media and some were published.

A 'Famosa representative, Eric Ong, responded by saying the tiger was simply "lazy" and that it was in the tiger's "nature" to behave inertly. He also denied any possibility that the tiger was sedated.

By and large, Malaysians who have watched the video find it difficult to accept that the tiger was naturally insentient. They are also disturbed by the manner in which the tiger was treated and that it was exploited for paid photo shoots.

A random group of Malaysian social media users have since established a Facebook Page called "Stop Animal Abuse at A' Famosa!" to raise public awareness. The Page has garnered support from over 5,000 Facebook users to date. The issue is also widely discussed on Twitter under the hash tag #TolongTigers.

These concerned Malaysians are planning a "Public Awareness Campaign" day-trip to A 'Famosa Resort on 29 May 2010 at 10:30am to advocate better treatment for wildlife living in captivity. They strongly believe that the livelihood and dignity of wildlife living in captivity is the collective responsibility of all Malaysians.

Please help create awareness among your readers by highlighting this issue in your blog / publication. Your support at the A 'Famosa Resort this weekend will also add great value to the cause. Hope to see you there.

KTMB doing the best it can
LAST week, I was taken aback when I saw a photograph of a KTM Komuter Electric Multiple Unit train hitched up behind a diesel locomotive with KTMB managing director Abd Razak Abd Malek smiling and flagging off the train.
I could not imagine why Abd Razak was smiling. KTM Komuter service is effectively regressing.
Going back to diesel locomotives to pull these Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) trains is sad and it should never have happened – but that is what you get with poor planning and a lack of investment from the government.
Before you complain to a KTMB employee about poor service or breakdowns, please remember that KTM Komuter is carrying three times the number of passengers it carried in 1994 – using a fleet that is less than half of the original fleet. On a good day KTM Komuter has 25-30 trains operating.
The fleet is breaking down and it is expected to carry three times more passengers – but where is the investment from the government?
New four-carriage EMU trains will arrive this year but the government only bought 13 train sets.
KTM Komuter needs at least 100 new train sets to offer a decent level of service and higher frequency of 7 minutes – which might encourage more passengers to use it.
KTMB management is very innovative and trying to do more in the situation that it is stuck with.
I recall speaking to KTMB management in mid-2008 during the height of what I described as a "Komuter crisis" and gave a suggestion about running shuttle trains pulled by extra diesel locomotives.
Apparently, the new KTM locomotives bought in 2007 were underpowered so instead of being used to haul freight wagons they are being used to pull passenger carriages.
I presume that KTMB does not have enough passenger carriages to be pulled since the Intercity service is seeing growth, so it is innovating again by making use of the "dead" EMU trains.
KTM also innovated with the "New-Q system" last year – another example of the company trying to make the best of a bad situation – and we hope that it will continue innovating and doing its best.
But it is sad to see that we have reduced KTM Komuter service to: using weak, underpowered diesel locomotives pulling "dead" EMU trains that can no longer move under their own power – just so it can provide a level of service that is way below expectations.
KTMB is listening and innovating and doing the best it can with the few crumbs it has been given – but it is the politicians who really need to hear what is being said.
I salute the employees of KTMB and managing director Abd Razak for putting on a brave face.

Because someone somewhere needs to generate more money in their pockets Will there be another government hand out to Nazir's ideas -not that they are really despicably bad his ideas- but just that we had been told by Najib himself of more transparent transplant of less corruptive values in negotiating government jobs, had we not just recently? Iam just helping my brother is it crime in our country To help our siblings Could the proposed sale of IJN to Sime Darby be Mohd Najib's way of helping to prop up the (new) Sime Darby, which is essentially the product of his brother's market-making? I beg Mohd Najib to start thinking seriously about the welfare of the masses like his late father did instead of pushing the country towards exclusivity for the sake of profits and short-term gains . Take for example Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC)which costed Petronas RM770 million in total was built in the view that this is a social obligation by Petronas to serve the public at large. But how many people actually go to PCMC? To be honest, I don't know where PCMC is heading in the healthcare business. I have some specialist friends who are being paid in excess of RM50k a month to do visitation in PCMC and yet come back complaining about lack of patients and procedures to be performed. Well, if you want to have a corporate social responsibility, might as well build a hospital in Sudan, Chad or Somalia. suffer from their actions.there more people can we are poor . While the Bumiputeras and the poor Chinese and Indians benefited modestly from official largesse, the Chinese mercantile and professional classes benefited more substantially.
With one stroke of a pen by the Finance Minister allowing football betting, tycoon Vincent Tan is richer by RM525 million richer. His Ascot Sports sold 70 per cent of the business to his corporate vehicle, Berjaya Group. If that's not gargantuan largesse, I don't know what.
The Chinese enjoyed official largesse by way of large monopolies, concessions, contracts and subsidies – anything from sugar monopoly to large timber concessions, gaming franchises, IPP licences, massive contracts and billion ringgit worth of direct and indirect subsidies.
In fact, official largesse not only helped to prosper the well-connected Malay-, Chinese- and Indian-controlled conglomerates, but also in some instances saved them from bankruptcies.
The YLT official website tells of the company nearly going bankrupt in the 1970s, forcing family members to chip in to rescue it. By the 1980s, the YTL Group took off on a grand scale on account of large government contracts to build schools and modular hospitals and later on privatisation of railway land and the award of the first Independent Power Producer (IPP) licence.readmore

It's fine with me if the new MCA under Dr Chua no longer wants the bread and butter type largesse for the Chinese, but is instead more concerned with intellectual matters such as good governance, accessibility to education, scholarships, promotions, the judiciary and crime.
If I can speak for the Malays, the Orang Asli and other Bumiputeras, I think we too are concerned about good governance. Without good governance, the poor are more likely to be marginalised because they cannot afford to give fat ang pau, duit kopi, sponsorships and cuti-cuti to the ruling elite.
The Malays, the Orang Asli and other Bumiputeras too want accessibility to education and scholarships, not only to attend public universities, but also to enroll in private universities and colleges.
The Malays, the Orang Asli and other Bumiputeras too want better promotion opportunities in the Chinese- and Indian-controlled conglomerates, especially those that enjoy massive government largesse apart from the GLCs.
The Malays, the Orang Asli and other Bumiputeras too want an independent judiciary and a reduction in crime because they too want justice and they too are victims of rising crime rates.
The MCA cannot pull the wool over people's eyes by blaming its declining support among the Chinese to the implementation of government policies. The MCA is part and parcel of the policies and their implementation. The MCA should instead thank the government and claim the credit that the NEP had given the Chinese a much larger slice of the expanded cake than the Bumiputeras and the Indians.
Also, it is not as if whenever or wherever the MIC is in the driving seats, things are better. The Port Klang Free Zone fiasco is a case in point.
And in Sarawak, where the BN had just been ousted from the Sibu parliamentary seat by the DAP on account of Chinese support, who benefited from the massive timber concessions and infrastructure contracts if not a handful of Chinese tycoons?
The Star newspaper in a report on last March 27 listed them as Tiong Hiew King, Ting Pek Khiing, the Lau brothers (Henry Lau Lee Kong, Stephen Lau Lee Kiong and Vincent Lau Lee Ming), Hii Yii Chiong, Ding Jack Sung, Ling Chiong Ho, Wong Kie Nai, and Yaw Teck Seng. It labeled them the "Sarawak Shakers".
The MCA, especially its new President, cannot continue to pin the blame for the party's poor rating among the Chinese on others. More so when the few seats it won in the 2008 general elections were mostly on account of Malay votes.
I am all for the MCA being concerned with intellectual issues so that the party will be better able to relate to the everyday things like morality, infidelity, the evil of gambling and alcoholism, the along menace, prostitution, human trafficking, illegal wildlife trade, drug trade, profiteering and many more issues plaguing our multi-religious and multi-racial society.

When the news broke that Najib has struck a deal with Singapore's counterpart Lee Hsien Loong regarding the KTM land in Singapore, I am surprised to see some commentators and readers sounding positive with it. Some readers on Malaysiakini were even surprisingly critical of Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's suspicion of the deal. Not much detail has been disclosed regarding the deal, so judging the merits of the deal is certainly premature. However, we should note that any deal coming from a prime minister of Malaysia with no track record of integrity is always alarming, especially when it seems to be rushed and little detail is disclosed. You can't fault anyone to think of another "submarine" or "Altantuya".

And let's wait for further details to be disclosed, if it will ever come. I bet many who are positive with the deal have not personally visited the KTM site. They would fail to appreciate the full opportunity (read: $$$) that Malaysia could be missing out.

I have extracted a map from Google Maps and indicated landmarks of significance in the larger area:

Click for larger view

The KTM land is located in Tanjong Pagar (lower left corner in the map), right at the end of a major street called Shenton Way. The area consisting of Shenton Way and Robinson Road is the heart of Singapore's financial industry, where important institutions and landmarks, like Monetary Authority of Singapore (Singapore's Bank Negara), The Treasury, DBS Bank, CPF (Singapore's EPF), SIA Tower, Capital Tower, International Plaza and Singapore Exchange, are located. At the adjacent area called the Marina Bay, the 'new CBD (central business district)' is currently under heavy development. That's where the most expensive property can be found. And incidentally that's also where the newly open 'sin city' of Singapore – Marina Sans Integrated Resort a.k.a. the casino – is located. The expressway at the bottom of the map snaking across is East Coast Parkway (ECP). Lands north of ECP are all prime (huge $$$), and south of it are the parks, sea and Keppel port. You can see that the remaining space with potential for further development is none other than the KTM land.

To appreciate the vicinity of the KTM land, look at the photo below:

Turn right at the end of Shenton Way, that is KTM Terminal

Considering the heavy development going on in the vicinity and the relatively large area size, the KTM land is a gold mine. By accident to the Malaysian government, of course, for nobody decades ago would imagine a train terminal sitting on a gold mine. It is under this context that all people of Malaysia should scrutinise the deal, whether or not the Najib administration has done for the maximum benefit of the country, whether or not there are any under-table deals undisclosed, for the benefits of his cronies. Only through disclosure of full details, especially the financial considerations, will the deal have a chance to be acceptable to all.
