Asia Sentinel: Malaysia's Anwar in Stress, Under Fire

Posted: 30 May 2010 10:29 AM PDT

ImageDefections, disorganization dog Malaysia's opposition party

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, under the stress of a long-running trial accusing him of sexual perversion, is under increasing strain as the point man for his Parti Keadilan Rakyat, or People's Justice Party as he continues to be harried politically as well.

"Some analysts would point out that Anwar has to get PKR's house in order," a think-tank analyst in Kuala Lumpur told Asia Sentinel. "There is growing frustration within Anwar's coalition and his own party." In particular, PKR has lost five members of parliament and five statehouse members to defections in the two years since the Pakatan Rakyat opposition coalition stunned the Barisan Nasional, or ruling national coalition by breaking its two-thirds hold on parliament. By contrast, Parti Islam se-Malaysia and the Democratic Action Party have only lost one each.

With a number of PKR state assemblymen now wavering and clearly considering defecting, it is possible that the opposition coalition could lose the states of Selangor and Kedah, which they won in the 2008 election. The state of Perak has already been reclaimed by the Barisan although critics say it was through skullduggery rather than legitimate political action.

"Because it is Anwar's party, Keadilan was supposed to be the anchor, but it has been weak from the very start," said a source in Kuala Lumpur. Parti Keadilan is largely made up of young, urban professional ethnic Malays.

"The problem is that Keadilan, like Anwar himself, are mostly ex-members of (the United Malays National Organization) and a lot of them are in there for a quick buck – like Umno itself, I guess. Anwar is bogged down with his legal sodomy case-but more importantly, there is a loss of confidence in his leadership."

What should have given a wakeup call to both Anwar and his colleagues in the opposition Democratic Action Party, which is largely ethnic Chinese, was an announcement earlier this week that Parti Islam se-Malaysia the fundamentalist Islamic party with its roots in the rural northeast, will take in non-Muslim members and even allow them to stand as PAS electoral candidates.

As Asia Sentinel first reported last November, it is PAS that is capitalizing on the situation, rather than the Barisan Nasional, or ruling national coalition. Despite defections, the opposition coalition has won eight of 11 by-elections since the March 2008 general election. The latest was in Sarawak on May 16 when, despite three visits by Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and a cornucopia of educational goodies, voters again turned away from the Barisan, an indication that the Barisan and particularly UMNO continues to suffer from perceptions of corruption and political favoritism to cronies.

PAS's latest move, announced last week, was to allow members of its Supporters Club to become full members of the Islamic party, with the right to attend annual meetings as delegates. The Supporters Club has some 20,000 members, almost all of them Chinese, who have turned away from the Barisan Nasional. According to the think tank source in Kuala Lumpur, PAS may have more Chinese voters than the DAP

The Chinese, says the source, -- an ethnic Chinese as well -- are comfortable with PAS despite the Islamic party's emphasis on fundamentalist Islam because, unlike the Barisan and particularly UMNO, PAS has no designs on the Chinese business community's ownership of the economic sinews of the country. The country's New Economic Policy, in place for four decades, has been designed to transfer as much as 30 percent of the economic activity of the country to ethnic Malays.

"The proof is that we recognize supporters as our official party wing," PAS leader Abdul Hadi Awang told his party's newspaper Harakah Daily. The Islamic party has already placed a non-Muslim in a Terengganu constituency to contest as a PAS candidate.

"Whether this is for real or a political gambit, it is hard to say," the analyst said. "But it does suggest PAS is going after the Chinese vote."

That isn't to say there won't be tension. There are plenty of Islamic firebrands in PAS who detest Chinese dietary freedom – to eat pork and drink beer, for instance -- and lack of discretion in dress for women. There have been attempts by PAS to limit beer sales in some communities. Nonetheless, the source said, PAS may have even wider resonance among voters than the Chinese-oriented Democratic Action Party, another leg of the opposition coalition.

In the meantime, Anwar and Parti Keadilan have come under constant criticism for the quality of the candidates they have fielded and for disorganization and political infighting in the party itself. Abdul Hadi Awang and DAP national chairman Karpal Singh, among others, have urged Anwar to look into the weaknesses in his party that have caused the defections. Anwar has repeatedly spoken of the need to find better candidates.

Anwar has been under a cloud since June of 2008, when a then-24-year-old former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, filed charges accusing the 62-year-old opposition leader of forcible sodomy. Sodomy in Malaysia is punishable by caning and up to 20 years in prison. The charges have since been reduced from forcible rape to consensual sex, which is still illegal under Malaysian law. The trial has droned on in a Kuala Lumpur courtroom for months, with Anwar's lawyers seeking delay after delay that has frustrated his followers, a growing number of whom say the trial so far appears to have been conducted on its merits rather than the previous sodomy charges brought against him in 1998 that put him behind bars for six years. Anwar: Trust in Khalid Ibrahim

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani (in Kota Bharu)

Trust this clean and sincere Menteri Besar, says Anwar

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today urged PKR members to have patience and confidence in Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, who faced criticism for mishandling the state.

Khalid has been under heavy scrutiny from his own party congress here after PKR's loss in the Hulu Selangor by-election and a sand mining scandal. Several delegates have said that Khalid should be replaced if he is not capable of managing the country's most industrialised state.

Anwar defended his close ally and said that Khalid was a "sincere and clean" leader. "When someone asked me how do I measure someone's credibility? I said that it is very hard to some a leader who is sincere and clean. Where his record is clean and not corrupt," the PKR de facto leader said when closing the congress.

He did admit that the state was plagued with problems. "I invited Tan Sri Khalid to join the party, two year later we see problems. What you don't know is that he does not have the absolute power as the mentri besar. Every step taken there is problems from the University to government agencies.

"We still have problems with religious council. I do not want to use this as an excuse for our not performing because to the rakyat, we cannot say that we have problems. The people want solution. That is why the problem has to be solved," he said.

Anwar said that slow implementation of policies in Selangor was due to the country's stagnant economy. "The main problem is the slow implementation of the economic policies because the country's dismal economy, investments is not coming in. Therefore Selangor must be more aggressive to ensure that projects approval will be expedited," he said.

The former deputy prime minister also admitted that he needs to perform better as the state's economic advisor. However he said that the Selangor government has fulfilled its promise of clean government.

"If someone asks me how to evaluate the performance of Tan Sri Khalid or Pakatan Rakyat, what we will say is that the first thing that we promised is a clean and transparent government. With that we defend that Khalid has been successful.

"This is the most important issue because the country is broken due to corruption. This country is broken because ministers and mentri besar take people's money, shares, land and timber. This is our war because of corrupted leaders that steal from the people. This is will not happen under Tan Sri Khalid. We must explain this matter to the public," he said.

Anwar also agreed with the delegates demands that the state appoint party members to local government. "I agree with the delegates but the candidate must be qualified. The candidate must only be a professional but have a clean track record. And we must be confident with the candidate because when he is at the helm of any GLCs, he would not be corrupt. We must give space to Tan Sri Khalid to ensure the right candidate," he said.

Earlier, party president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail reiterated the need for the members to patient with Khaild.

"Like any renovation, we must do it slowly. If we want to do a proper renovation then we have to do many things. So give him time, please be patient," she said.

Dr Wan Azizah also warned that party should not be blinded with Putrajaya and not forget the root of their struggle. "I want to give one message that we all have a stake in this party, you are not mere audience. How are you going to contribute to our struggle? Allah can't change our fate, only we can" she said.

She also had a light moment with the delegates and joked about Anwar. "Syamsul Iskandar earlier said that Anwar belongs to party. Anwar belongs to the people. Hey, he is my man lah," she said.

Later during a press conference, Anwar said that the party will be looking to strengthening its leadership. "I will discuss with President and deputy president on how we could strengthen the party leadership with new appointments. We will discuss on certain duties in several committees. We will decide on this matter in the next few days," he said.

Kalimah Allah vs Buaya

Posted: 30 May 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Pordah !!

Nampaknya ramai ustaz ustaz terlalu lapang dan tiada apa yang patut buat, cuba kita tanyakan ustaz bahlol ini, isu judi bola, isu rasuah,. Isu kemiskinan Melayu, isu remaja buang bayi, isu remaja melayu konngkek merata rata, isu melayu zina, isu kemorosotan akhlak dan morality kenapa tidak disentuh , Cuma nak kaitkan logo crocs dengan Kalimah Allah ?? woit Melayu Islam… tanyalah diri, bila boleh bertanding dengan bangsa lain??

Kopiah vs songkok tinggi

3) Berjanggut, pakai kopiah putih, muka bodoh, dahi hitam, rambut fasyen kampung, digunting pendek pendek, tiada gunakan krim rambut, pakai jubah Itu lah Melayu Pure.
4) Manakalah Melayu yang pakai reyban, rambut berkrim, kasut mengelit, ada misai tiada janggut, itu geng keturunan syaitan. Dalam perbualan senantiasa gunakan bahasa campuran , i , you , you i , i help you, you help me .....

Our judge of "extraordinary standing"

Posted: 30 May 2010 04:47 AM PDT

I read a f* amazing item in The Malaysian Insider's Zaki Azmi to take a seat in Lincoln's Inn.

It tells us that the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn would each year elect a very few to become honorary benchers.

Those elected would be on the basis of their extraordinary standing in their professions at the level of chief justice or similar or head of state.

Thus Zaki, our very dear Chief Justice of Malaysia has been so appointed Honorary Bencher of the Lincoln's Inn, one of the four Inns of Court in Britain.

Well I f* be … I became speechless on reading this … though I have to admit since his appointment, Zaki has certainly been "extraordinary" but I won't go deeper into this – but see my previous post Hall of Dishonour.

I wonder whether those idiots in Lincoln Inn have even bothered to follow WTF's going on in our amazing Malaysian judicial world.

Currently there are three Malaysian judges appointed as Lincoln Inn's honorary benchers – our very dear "extraordinary" Zaki, the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah and highly respectable Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram whom we have not seen lately in political cases at all.

Well, you may argue against my statement above of 'three Malaysian judges', observing that HRH is a former judge but I wonder, just wonder you know ... whether HRH ordering Nizar Jamaluddin to vacate the Perak MB position (a pretend show of power, according to Justice NH Chan, a former judge) would be a judicial decision, thus making him an active judge again.

"Extraordinary standing in their professions" – I thought of describing that statement as 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' but I think 'f* amazing' would do!

*No MIC Chairman's or CWC members ( the orgs claimed 300 branch leaders will attend + many CWC members.
*"known cases of" anti-samy like Dato subra, Ex-Youth chief Vicky, Dato muthupalaniappan and many more not seen anywhere around.
Malaysiakini : GAS starts with the singing of Negaraku and the MIC party song. Many in the crowd do not know the song, suggesting they are not MIC members

A "Big Job" for our Suruhanjaya Pencegah Rasuah ... If its true. I wonder if this guy can be arrested for hands in crime?
If its not . he too can be charged for defamation....

Barath Maniam takes the podium. He claims that Samy Vellu had sought his help in 1992 when police and ACA raided his office to investigate allegations of corruption involving 10 million Telekom shares allocated to MIC. He claims MIC received only one million shares.

He also shows a copy of a document signed by former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad affirming that MIED was set up for the Indian community. He says he has the original document.

My view :

DSSV said it loud and clear - " i will leave eight or nine months before my term expires in May 2012. I will hand over the leadership to the NEXT GENERATION OF LEADERS THEN"

So let him finish his job. The trust and mandate given to him by the members

The party is experiencing turbulence. Is it because the captain is leaving or overstayed? whatever it is GAS kind of politicking not gonna do us any good.

The re branding of MIC just began.... change in the leadership is only the start....

Doa for Sultan Kelantan

Posted: 30 May 2010 01:04 AM PDT

I am in Kota Bharu, visiting relatives and friends. As a journalist, I did asked some distinguish figures about the health condition of His Majesty Sultan Ismail Petra ibni Almarhum Sultan Yahya Petra, who has been ill for quite sometimes.

I was told that he was recuperating, thanks to the continuous effort put up by his family members to cure him.

I believe the rakyat of Kelantan are concern about his health and the events that took place during his absence from the throne. Many versions of stories came to me, some of which were shockingly unbelieveable. I hope to stay awhile and dig up the truth myself.

Anyway, I would like to call on all Malaysians to pray for his health and wellbeing. The Kelantanese say he is a good and caring Sultan, so I agree. I came from a state without a King and I understand how proud is it to have one.

Patriotism As In Umno's Way...

Posted: 29 May 2010 11:25 PM PDT

I thought I could get away from airing my disgust here for a short while and take advantage of this long yet short weekend to relax and calm my nerves after being continuously bombarded with 2 years of blatant stupidity and blatant arrogance of Umno's politic.
But it turned out to be a short lived one..
I have survived the cheap publicity stunts of our PM joining in the Wesak Day celebration in Brickfield but somewhat felt disgusted with the news and picture of him wiping away the tears of an old friend who suffered and is recovering from a stroke. So much so for sincerity when one turns it into such a cheap publicity stunt.
However, what really got into my nerves is this piece of news..

The Government should revoke the citizenship of Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamaruddin, Cheras Umno division chairman Datuk Syed Ali Alhabshee said.

He said the Government should revoke his citizenship as Raja Petra was no longer keen on staying here.

Furthermore, his activities could affect peace in Malaysia, he said.

"Citizens who are not patriotic should not be given a place here. Raja Petra should be given appropriate punishment for what he has done," he wrote in his blog

Earlier reports indicated that Raja Petra is now in Britain.

Syed Ali also urged the Government to carry out investigations on corporate figures and private sectors financing Raja Petra.

"If the Government fails to do so, it might give an impression that there are insiders who are in cahoots with Raja Petra. It is strange that the Government is slow in taking action against Raja Petra." - The Star

Pathetically moronic!! Using the patriotic word so loosely. Some more coming from an Umno division chairperson. A moron still trapped in his world of lies and delusion. Is that all what Umno has left?
If by exposing the evils of Umno and their goons for the betterment of the country is deemed to be unpatriotic, who wants to be patriotic? And if by creating awareness of the evils of this regime to the people could affect peace, bring on the war then..
Perhaps, we do need more morons like him and Ibrahim Ali to help speed up the death of BeEnd.
On that note alone, I am feeling much better now..

Which required better acting from the irrepressible RPK,The best politicians are very talented, but often that blessing is flecked with problems characteristic of a maverick. The big chief like MAHATHIR talent in their subordinates, but squirm at its attendant frailties. Bright sparks tend to possess an implacable desire to place a mirror before stupidity. The reverse mirror, however, displays a more provocative facet. Jealousy and intrigue are companions of ambition; if the talented were not ambitious, they would not be in politics.
That's why we moan and bitch and bellyache about the political heat. Because by doing so we hope in our next incarnation life will, in all senses of the term, be cool. Me? The heat's making me so miserable right now that in my next innings Hell itself should freeze over. A real chill-out.Are we a nation of masochists, people who take pleasure in their own suffering? Is that why we allow ourselves to get so hot and bothered about a routine occurrence: on the tropical plains, summer is going to be hot, as sure as eggs is andas? Or do we talk so much about the heat simply because we have no other topic of conversation. (Scientist who created life in a lab? What's so hot about that? Didn't that Frankenstein fellow do it years ago? Tell you what. Let's compare heatwaves instead. I bet my heatwave is bigger than your heatwave.)
The more people talk about how hot this political season is and how much worse it might still get the hotter I feel. And i'm sure so does everyone else. So why do we do it? Why do we work ourselves into a frenzy telling each other how hot it is, recounting cases of people we know who've got sunstroke, or are likely to get sunstroke? Why do we send our internal mercury soaring by squabbling about whether it was hotter yesterday than it is today, or whether that ought to be the other way round? Why don't we learn to ignore the heat, like a bothersome dog which, if you pay it the slightest attention, will feel encouraged to get familiar, trying to jump into your lap and slobber all over your face with its great big drooly tongue? Why do we make the heat so much worse by talking so much about it?
RPK'S's bullshit
Will the last day of the PKR Congress turn out to be the last days of PKR? In a few hours more we shall know. The cauldron is boiling. The contents are spilling over. I doubt anyone can force the lid down and prevent the law of physics from taking over.
RPK said I know, I know, I know…many of you here hate it when I talk about Tun Dr Mahathir, especially when I talk about the positive side of him. Look, no one is perfect, but there are good and bad sides to everyone…okay, maybe with the exception of me. Even Anwar has his bad side — and he has admitted that he chose the wrong candidates in the 12th General Election.Yes, Tun Dr Mahathir is, in a way, my role model (sorry chaps). RPK said Well, I too have been saying the same things. And Tun Dr Mahathir is the one who taught me how to say all those things. And if I am a criminal and a traitor to the country for saying what I am saying, then we have only Tun Dr Mahathir to blame for me becoming what I have become in finishing PKR once and for all.PKR has been a pain in Mahathir'S ass hole
When a UMNO starts to swindle and cheat the rakyat, it is on a downward slide to ruination. Plagiarism becomes a way of life and their 'new' NEM' is totally unoriginal. The fact is simply this: BN goons are so dependant on easy money they will do anything, and that includes martial law, to stop PR becoming the next Govt. Any institution, whether party or government, demands the stability of an uncontroversial script, or the comfort of silence from geniuses who can never find an equitable balance between their self-estimation and the role they have been given in what is essentially a Brechtian beggar's opera. Mahathir is a sharp and well-read politician, except when his tongue goes to his head. He has been a evil prime minister, willing to stand his ground and even take a risk or two.
