The Failure of Suhakam (Human Rights Commission)

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 12:41 PM PST

There is no credibility to the home ministry based on the facts and the records speaks for itself. The Home Minister Hisshammuddin Hussein who is the son of the third Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Hussein Onn who eventually stayed out of the fake UMNO and had refused to joined this new "celup" UMNO party which is totally not the real UMNO but a fake masquerading as the original.

This son of Tun Hussein Onn is a far cry from his father and his grandfather Sir Onn Jaafar the founder of the real UMNO, Sir Onn Jaafar was a man of high integrity and strong principles who left UMNO because he was disgusted with the communal and racist approach of the party and he will soon be proven to be right and shows that there should be unity and unison in the approach towards governance and that politics should be based on the truth and all people of the land should be together as one and not to be segregated and divided into different groupings. This approach of segregation was manipulated by later greedy and corrupted leaders who wanted to obtain absolute powers of a dictator. Like his father Tun Hussein had high standard and of strong principles and had refused to join the fake UMNO but sad to say that such glorious line of ancestry is all being tarnish and soon ruined.

Lets get back to the present His-sham-mud-din who today states that his Ministry has claimed that there were no signs of torture, abuse, pressure or force being inflicted on the son of Raja Petra. It is difficult to agree with the Minister based on historical facts and the government's gross infringement of basic Human Rights records that was repeatedly highlighted by the  international Human Rights Institutions and witnessed by the millions of Malaysians. Malaysians are fully aware that there are long list of unresolved human rights infringement by the institutions and departments of the Home Ministries such as the thousands of deaths in custody and not even a minute 1% of the recorded cases  had been properly addressed and a accounted for.

It is common knowledge and if you were to conduct a poll or survey i am very sure that you will find at least 90% of Malaysians will tell you that the local Institutions are all controlled by this fake UMNO government and that there are no independence and separation of powers. You can conduct your investigations towards the torture of the son of Raja Petra and as you have already implied as from the Press reports that there were no human rights infringements and whatsoever you announced will always be translated to be so otherwise.Conduct an independent inquiry and investigation and we mean independent that is to say that the parties being appointed are not appointed by you or your kind, the appointment itself has to be independent as in the past all you guys do is to appoint your cronies and than say that it is independent committee or commission or what so ever you call or titled, it is all the same.

The majority of Malaysians will not trust you as you had repeatedly harass and threaten them with impunity actions, your harsh bullying and gangsterism towards the people will not be forgotten and forgiven and will go down in to history as the dark ages of Malaysia, how can Malaysians forget the attack on the elderly and young children who participated in the various demonstration and protests. The right to express and the basic freedom to peaceful expressions of protest and demonstration was brutally handled. The Internal Security Act has even up to now while it is being reviewed used to scare and threaten the common people and shows your evil intentions to keep this wanton act in order to contain and intimidate in your quest for the greed of tyranny power.

And i can't believe that the local Human Rights Commission of "Suhakam" had manage to retain the "A" status accorded by the International Human Rights Committee, Suhakam had many a time shown their reluctance to stand up to the government and had sometimes look the other way when an infringement has been reported. Suhakam had much earlier state that they will investigate the allege torture of Raja Azman under detention and had up till today not heard a peep. Suhakam had at most just made press releases to the many issues and knowingly that the controlled main stream media will at most just print a small tiny column and most of time not even carried in the main stream news. Suhakam had not stood up against this government and demand for clear and transparent accountability and for their statement to be printed and reported with adequate coverage. Suhakam are you yet another fake? another pretense of contributions as a watchdog on the basic rights of Malaysians? What have been your achievements so far and what changes or improvements have you brought about? The truth is that other than just making unheard noises you had in my observation done naught and just another "wayang kulit".

'Tulang besi' adu salahlaku pemimpin PAS - Malaysiakini

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 11:07 AM PST

Salam pembaca2 Malaysiawaves sekelian.

'Tulang besi' adu salahlaku pemimpin PAS.
Abdul Rahim Sabri

12:11pm

"Saya sanggup menerima apa-apa risiko. Saya berpihak kepada kebenaran dan saya ada bukti. Parti harus dijaga. Saya tidak takut".

Abdul Rahman berkata beberapa aduan berhubung perkara tersebut sebelum ini pernah dikemukakan kepada pejabat agung PAS dan jawatankuasa displin parti melalui emel sejak November lalu.

Bagaimanapun tidak ada maklum balas berhubung aduan beliau itu, tambahnya.

From around the websites -- Oil & gas royalty mother of all issues -- Fw: [the oRAcLe weblog OrAcLeOrAcLeOrAcLeOrAcLeOrAcLeOrAcLeOrAcLe] Oil & gas roya...

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 11:57 AM PST

From around the websites

Oil & gas royalty mother of all issues
Umno will be crucifying itself on this issue in Kelantan if the Federal Government continues to deny oil & gas royalty to the state. The same goes for Terengganu. This is a question of the law & what is right and wrong. Wrong place to play politics. Already, in Sabah & Sarawak there is a lot of dissatisfaction that the Federal Government, through Petronas, is only paying oil & gas royalty from a small of wells in the inner waters. These two states don't get oil & gas royalty from the great majority of their wells dotted in waters off the respective states. This is likely to be the mother of all issues in the next General Election. Just imagine the billions that the Federal Government/Petronas have been denying Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu & Kelantan over the years in oil and gas royalty? How is the Federal Government/Petronas going to make good on all the back payments due to the oil & gas rich states when it is virtually bankrupt? It's pointless going to court on the issue.

The Holy Bible, the word of God, highly-recommended reading
In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus says: "He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone!" Jesus is the son of God who was born of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was crucified, died & was buried to save mankind from their sins & ensure eternal life for them. No greater love has someone than when he lays down his own life for his fellow men. He rose again on the 3rd day & sits in glory at the right hand of God in heaven. The Holy Bible is a wonderful work of ancient literature which Christians believe is the Word of God. The word was made flesh. The Holy Bible, the all-time best seller in the world since it appeared in history, is highly recommended reading especially for those who believe in the power of positive thinking. There is so much inspiration in the Holy Bible to guide us in our daily life. How can we be sure that every word in the Holy Bible is true? The proof of the pudding is in the eating. Belum cuba, belum tahu. Tak kenal, maka tak cinta. Truth is a mental construct.

Can I f . . . you today?"
I hope PKR and PR kicks out Anwar or at least he leaves so that Zaid Ibrahim and Tengku Razaleigh can save the opposition alliance. But that part about: "Can I f . . . you today?" is ridiculous. Why so polite? No one wanting sex will ask such a question. They will just go ahead and do it through body language etc. Does Anwar ask his wife the same question each time he wants to have sex with her? Or does she ask him: (all the while standing like a kayu) "Anwar, can you f . . . me today?" Also, just out of curiosity, was the question to Sinful Saiful in English or Malay?

Need for sea planes along ferry routes
Ferry services in Sabah are an utter disgrace compared with that in neighbouring countries like the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Sarawak, Hong Kong and Macao. Most of the time, the ferries lack life-jackets and other safety equipment. People are actually very afraid to take the ferries and given a choice would rather fly. It's time for the state and federal governments to introduce sea planes along the routes plied by the ferries. They could operate as sea taxis or shuttle services.

Time for 3rd Force in Malaysian politics
Pakatan Rakyat (PR) pro-tem chair Zaid Ibrahim and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah should both quit their respective parties and help put together a Third Force in Malaysian politics. The Third Force should comprise Sabah, Sarawak, the Indian community, the Orang Asli, other minorities, some Chinese factions in Barisan Nasional, and followers of both Zaid and Razaleigh in Peninsular Malaysia. With the emergence of the Third Force, both the BN and PR would be cut down to size. In the final toss after the next General Election, the Third Force would seize the reins of power in Putra Jaya by enlisting the support of either PR or BN or, alternatively, help form the federal government helmed by either of the other two political blocs. Zaid faces disciplinary action by the end of this month for publicly terming PKR as a poor man's version of Umno. This has upset the top party brass who believe that what Zaid actually meant, but did not say, is that the party is "a poor version of Umno". He's likely to be suffer more than the proverbial slap on the wrist. Anwar's inner circle is pushing for Zaid to be suspended from the party until the party elections are over. This would take him out of the running in the party polls. Razaleigh came within a hair's breath of wresting the premiership in 1987. Had at least 23 of Mahathir Mohamad's 43 vote-edge stayed with Razaleigh, as previously pledged, the latter would have won by one vote.

PR should end marginalisation of Indian community
The solution is simple. PR should allow the HRP to contest in the Indian seats it plans to create in 15 parliamentary and 38 state constituencies to take up the issue of the Indians being marginalised and being denied their place in the sun. At present no one is taking up Indian issues. If PR refuses to give way to HRP in the seats mentioned, BN will win by default. Not that HRP wants BN to win. Where will that leave PR's dream of capturing Putra Jaya? This is the result of PR shutting the mouths of their Indian legislators and ignoring the legitimate demands of the Indian community in states they rule. Dap has Chinese and Chinese-Indian seats, Pas has Muslim-non Muslim seats and PKR has Malay-Chinese-Indian seats. Indians are being told by PR to support the coalition first and everything will be okay when Umno is kicked out and it takes over Putra Jaya. Such promises are not good enough.. PR must demonstrate its sincerity now by ending the marginalisation of the Indian community.

The emergence of Borneo as a great economy
The future of the economies of the states & regions in Borneo lie on this great island itself & not with Malaysia or Indonesia. Sabah and Sarawak are going nowhere with Malaysia & similarly for Kalimantan with Indonesia. The only good thing for Borneo is their unhindered access to the Malaysian & Indonesian markets. It would be better for Borneo to form a customs union along the lines of the European Union. From there, it's just a short hop, skip & jump towards greater integration for their mutual benefit & that of Malaysia, Indonesia, Asean & the world. The road network is ready, air links should follow, the ferry links & sea links should be upgraded, especially on the Malaysian side.. The Malay language is a common factor & will ease the conduct of business. In fact, before the advent of the west in southeast Asia, Malay was the trading language in the Malay archipelago until replaced by English & Dutch. Malay archipelago does not refer to a people but the Malay language.

The Law is an Ass
In the case of the two MBs in Perak, the facts of the case is what happened before the matter ended up in court. Basically, three people including two facing corruption charges ran away to become "BN-friendly" independents, Najib appointed himself as the head of Perak Umno and Perak BN and then saw the Sultan and "advised" him that BN now had the majority in the state assembly, the Sultan met with the three and the MB Nizar. Nizar advised the Sultan to consent to the dissolution of the state assembly to hold fresh elections. The Sultan refused. He told Nizar to resign. Nizar refused. Sultan appointed a new MB.. These are the facts of the case.

The fact that Najib bribed the three to run away is besides the point and also the fact that Najib agreed to drop the corruption charges against two of them is besides the point. The fact that the Sultan's family company, Gamuda, has many contracts from the Federal Government is also besides the point. The fact that there is a MACC case against the daughter of the Sultan over a road building project in Sabah, the Kalabakan-Sepulut highway, is also besides the point.

The issues to consider in the case of the two MBs is whether the Sultan can dismiss the MB if he refuses to resign after having apparently lost his majority and whether the Sultan has absolute discretion (read absolute power) to go on to appoint another MB although the previous MB is still around. Also to consider is whether the state assembly is the only forum to dismiss the MB via a motion of no confidence. Also to consider is whether going back to the people is the only course of action that the Sultan should consider since the Nizar Govt was elected by the people and can only be dismissed by the people.

The High Court ruled in favour of Nizar who became MB again but only for five hours.

The Court of Appeal stayed the High Court Ruling and later decided in favour of the BN and the Sultan.

Nizar appealed to the Federal Court

The Federal Court unanimously ruled in favour of the Sultan and the BN. Nizar wanted a full 9 to 11 man bench to hear the appeal but the Federal Court refused and appointed five pro-BN judges.

To add insult to injury, the Federal Court advised Nizar that all is not lost and that he can apply for a Judicial Review of the Federal Court ruling and move a motion of no confidence in the state assembly to dismiss the BN MB. In the case of the Judicial Review, it will never be heard until the next General Elections are near. By that time, any revision of the Federal Court's own ruling will be academic (of no use) if it is in favour of Nizar. All the Federal Court can tell Nizar is: "Oops! Sorry lah. Never mind lah, you can have a chance again to be MB since the elections are here. Good Luck. He He He!"

The Federal Court should have taken the circumstances which caused the three to run away into account and then go on to reinstate Nizar and advise the Sultan to agree to fresh elections if the MB requests. However, our judges are morons who invariably support the BN no matter what the circumstances. Blinkered (like a horse which cannot see right or left because it has blinkers on which prevents it from doing so) justice is no justice at all.

The 'Sodomy 2.0′ version unfolded on June 28 when PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's 23-year-old former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan lodged a police report. He claimed to have been sodomised by Anwar in a condominium in Damansara. To many, it was unreal. Ten years ago, Anwar had faced a similar charge which saw him being jailed until the conviction and sentence were overturned on appeal in 2004. In the latest episode, he was arrested on July 16 by balaclava-clad police – a scene reminiscent of that in 1998- but freed a day later after being questioned and made to undergo a medical examination. My legal team advised me that we should refer and compel the syariah court to instruct the prosecution to conduct their work professionally in accordance with the syariah law in Islam. MAHATHIR disaster, racial and religious diversity to be poisoned by UMNOMALAY prejudices. Their separate treatment on NON MALAYS the Hole in the Soul of Judgement Barisan Politicians, stop wasting our money on your whims
The Government Continues to Fail Us:
Until now, government has relied on adrenaline-driven aggression (Primal Aggression) to identify an emerging aggressor. This has failed because it represents an individual who is losing control and who ultimately may lose complete control and attack their victim. Generated by anxiety, fear, anger, frustration, etc. too often our government in airport security accosts the 85 year old woman going to her late husband's funeral because she is gripped with anxiety, fear and frustration; yet, airport security continues to use Deception Detection, a system long determined to be inadequate. Different cultures deceive differently and since there are over two thousand cultures, Deception Detection requires far too much sophistication for most to use effectively and therefore it is prone to apply stereotyping, becoming an immediate target of civil libertarians. A failed system out of the box, yet our government continues to use it.
When the Radio and TV presenter greet Salam 1 Malaysia, they ring a hollow note with no substance. Muhyiddin, an agitator of racial tension in Malaysia. Leave Majority of Malays have been blessed by the PR government of Penang. They can't say that about during BN rule. You are ashame of the contrast and now are coming up with nonsense to bring down the popularity of the PR government of Penang. that are not getting their free nbo bid contracts anymore. PR government are bend on abolishing those preferential treatment for the few and are not afraid to govern the state justly. Now you are talking through SAIFOOL ASSHOLE"From what we can see, there is a serious political situation there(Penang)," said. Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today the political upheaval and administrative weakness in Penang should make the people in the state realise the actual stand of the opposition pact.
Its the scandals NAJIB No man can bring any substantive reform under any banner, as long as he remains suspect of the many allegations hanging over his head.
Perhaps that's why the UMNO warlords are happy to keep Najib in power. In him, they probably have a compliant PM who can't do much other than provide cosmetic, public relations and time – buying statements or actions, with the hope that if the economy improves, then Malaysians will forget about everything that is wrong with the system, and live happily ever after under 1 Malaysia. The problem with UMNO is that they keep under-estimating the voters' moods these days, and Najib appears to be "trapped"by MAHATHIR the very system that produced him,
The cracks in Prime Minister Najib Razak's 1Malaysia regime are showing. It does not please me to say this, because I genuinely wanted all these much-vaunted promises to come true. But 1Malaysia is clearly failing, and the Prime Minister is showing himself to be the weak leader I was afraid he was going to be.In reality, a government dominated by the United Malays National Organization (UMNO) is using spurious religious/linguistic arguments to shore up its support among a majority Malay electorate, which has been fed for years with preferences and privileges. Meanwhile, non-Malay money and talent exits the country. The idea was to use the Catholics to start trouble , shoot the population, get rid of the chinese and indians ALONG THE WAY…take over using emergency powers. This is primarily to distract the population regarding the stealing ot jet engines, the murder of tiong, Altuntaya and the pKFZ scandal running to billions. The mamak used this tactic very sneakily to cover his tracks using ISA/ OSA too. However UMNO failed to get a larger majority of good Malays and good Muslims who now know that they are playing a dangerous game to seize power.
That's why the art of political articulation is so important. Every time an issue comes up for debate in the public domain, you must frame the questions right or run the risk of your rivals walking away with the public support that could have easily been yours. You can't take on Sachin Tendulkar, Mukesh Ambani, Shah Rukh and NAJIB unless you have got your rhetoric right. Every ten years or so a new generation of Malaysian voters come up and question the promises earlier generations took for granted. Every few years a new road map for the future is drawn and the Malaysia we speak of takes on another shape, another imagery.UMNO does not care about the population. They have enough money to enjoy and have gala time. If the country and people . suffer .so what. They are rich and can get away anytime. It is power that they want now to hold on in order that they can cover-up their dastardly deeds as long as possible…that is the game..the POWER game….as long as they are in control even the LAW CANNOT GET THEM. IT IS TIME THAT MALAYS break away from UMOONo's strangle and siege and act independently using their conscience and freedom given in the constitution. They have to think for the nation.the racial and religious divides an UMNO-led government seecarries two main dangers. The first is the continuing large scale exodus of capital and of talented non-Malays. Five years of generally good prices for its main commodity exports, oil, gas and palm oil, have delivered huge trade surpluses and a current account surplus of more than 10 percent of gross domestic product. But economic growth has been slow due to very weak private investment, only partly offset by large government deficit spending. Once a major recipient of foreign capital, Malaysia is now a source of flight capital. This is only sustainable while commodity prices remain at double levels of five years ago and three times those in 2002.A longer term danger, at least as perceived by some leading Malays, such as the former Finance Minister Tunku Razaleigh, is that a combination of religious intolerance and resentment of federal exploitation of their natural resources will generate secessionism in the Borneo states. They joined Malaysia in 1963 without much enthusiasm but as the best option open to them as the British withdrew from empire. They do not want their traditions of racial and religious diversity to be poisoned by peninsular prejudices. Their separate treatment on the Allah issue will have some immediate benefits for Kuala Lumpur, but can only underscore just how different they are.
In short, the episode is sad commentary on a nation whose mix of races, its fine infrastructure and wealth of resources has held such promise. If only there really were One Malaysia.
Why should we accept such nonsense from politicians, merely to satisfy their whims? It is our money that goes into satisfying these whims. I think readers should dash off angry letters to the Prime Minister, tell him that we need accountability in the system. Readers should also ask the Prime Minister why he can't tick off the UMNO'S BIG DEAL MAKERS and order them to at least pretend to practice austerity, especially at the time when the poor are reeling under rising prices. Tell him that you hear him often shedding tears for the common man and need for austerity and accountability, so the least he can do it to ask those in power to shun such open profligacy The first step to our ultimate goals of nation building. As they say, the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step. There is this old Malay fable about a Bomoh. In a certain village, a number of children came to this BOMOH and complained about a snake that was giving them much trouble. So the BOMOH went looking for the snake, and when he found it, he advised the snake to mend its ways and stop attacking humans. The snake agreed respectfully and became docile and harmless, and the children were happy. But soon, the children lost all fear of the snake, and started hitting it with sticks and stones whenever they saw it. The snake then went to the BOMOH and complained about how his advice to stop biting had brought nothing but trouble for it. The BOMOH remarked;quot;Snake, I asked you not to bite them, but did I tell you not to hiss at them?quot; Here is a lesson for us. We need to at least hiss at these politicians, as otherwise they lose all fear and pelt us with SODOMY ,,ISA,,FABRICATION and steal our money. If you are completely, 100% passive, you WILL be taken advantage of. So, let us take the very first step. Hiss through letters. Write on issues of imporance to the concerned leaders, clearly and articulately, strongly but getting crude or abusive. Explain clearly what you are objecting to, and what you think needs to be done. When these so-called leaders receive thousands of angry letters like this, they cannot just sit back and ignore them. These letters, the first steps, also develop our own mental muscles and give us the strength to take more steps. When we write, we start getting more conscious of our own rights. We learn to articulate our grievances without burning public property. We build up more networks of like-minded people, and can move on to more significant actions that can make even bigger differences. But we all have to start with the first step.

NO TO AUSSIE INTERFERENCE!

NO TO AUSSIE INTERFERENCE!

I am calling on all pro-government MPs, NGOs, youth organisations and bloggers to joint hands in a peaceful protest next Wednesday, February 17 at 3pm, to convey our note of protest to the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia.

We need to express our concern over similar note of protest presented by about 50 Australian lawmakers to our High Commissioner Salman Ahmad, in Canberra on Thursday, demanding our government to drop all charges against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and call off his trial (read h e r e).

We always consider Australia as a good partner. So much efforts have and are being carried out to foster more understanding between our two countries. However, when their Parliament decided to do so, we take it as a betrayal of relations.

We had never interfered in their domestic affairs but we would like to tell them to pay more attention towards their oppressed aborigines, their growing anti-Asian sentiment and their askance on non-whites. As much as we try not to meddle in other country's business, we expect them to reciprocate well enough.

This is actually quite funny!

The Malaysian submarine that cannot dive. It's okay la. Won't affect its operation one.

The Malaysian Insider today reported ......

A technical fault in the nation's first submarine, the KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, that prevents it from diving is a minor hitch that will not interfere with its operations and can be rectified by its builders.
Are you laughing already? No? Read it again. A submarine that cannot dive. But it will not interfere with its operations.

HUH???!!! So what is its operations? As a sailboat ferrying tourists to watch fireflies?

But then this is Malaysia ma. So don't worry because............

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said: "We have a warranty on the sub and we are confident the builders can fix it."

We are confident that the builders can fix it!!!

Well, all I can say after reading that is ...........

WHAT THE FUCK???!!!

Come on! Everybody join in. Say it out loud...........

NIAMAH!!!

Security in Sabah: officials in denial? (Malaysiakini)

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 03:53 AM PST

Conflicting reports, statements and counter-statements have blurred the security picture in Sabah in the wake of a kidnapping incident in Semporna waters on last Monday.

Earlier, the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur issued a travel alert warning valid until mid-April for the Sabah east coast.

Police describe the incident on Pulau Sebangkat as an "isolated" one involving a botched robbery attempt at a seaweed farm on payday for the 34 workers.

Both the supervisor and manager of the farm were spirited away, while no money was taken despite it being payday.

Pay dispute

No other details are being released on the incident. However initial theories included a pay dispute and an act of revenge by former staff.

"We believe the suspects are still in the country. They have no way to escape as we are tightening our patrols and guarding all exit points," said state commissioner of police Noor Rashid Ibrahim in a security update.

Noor also dismissed reports that the kidnapping was the work of the notorious Abu Sayyaf group in the Philippines.

Situation 'under control'

Noor's statement has been partly echoed by the second naval region commander, first admiral Anuwi Hassan, who added that naval intelligence was working together with their counterparts in the Philippines.

They are also working with the Malaysian maritime enforcement agency, the marine operations force, general operations force and the police.

Anuwi dismissed the incident as the work of a small unorganised gang, and said the navy was on the alert for any militants from the southern Philippines crossing over into Sabah.

He believes the incident is more likely due to 'internal problems' within the seaweed firm.

Yet in the first police statement on the incident, it was stated that "locals could have played a role in the case" and implying the 'kidnappers' were not local.

This is at odds with the pay dispute theory bandied about by the authorities. It is not known if any ransom demands have been made since the incident.

Anuwi said, "The situation is under control and our boats are patrolling the area around the clock."

The lack of radar equipment makes security surveillance in the area challenging. However, four radars are in the process of being commissioned for the east coast while another four would be installed before the year-end.

Mixed reactions from politicians

foreign minister anifah amanForeign Minister Anifah Aman (left) believes the incident was not the work of an organised group like the Abu Sayaff but he is in favour of the authorities intensifying surveillance in the area.

PKR's deputy state chief Christina Liew Chin Jin Hadhikusumo asked, "What can the rakyat (citizens) do when militants enter our waters to rob and kidnap our people?"

She queried the usefulness of the billion-ringgit naval base in Sepanggar and the commissioning of the first submarine in Sabah waters.

Similar statements have been issued by DAP, PAS and Sapp (Sabah Progressive Party). The common concern is on investment and tourism in the state.

State Minister for Tourism, Culture and Environment Masidi Manjun hopes that any tour cancellations being contemplated will not be due to the incident in Semporna.

Meanwhile, local media reports described the situation in Semporna as normal in the wake of the Mon incident.

Locals seem to be going about their business as usual. The reports also spoke of foreign tourists in the area showing no signs of cutting short their stay in Sabah.

Ali Rustam cleared; Muhyiddin blurred?

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 03:23 AM PST

Malaysiakini in its news article MACC drops graft case against S'gor MB, 7 others reported that: "…no further prosecution would be taken in eight high-profile cases involving both Pakatan Rakyat and BN politicians."

The one I'm interested in is of course Ali Rustam. The Malacca CM had been under a cloud "…for allegedly throwing
pre-party election dinners for Umno delegates last year."

If we all recall, because of that Ali Rustam was barred from the UMNO election for the party's deputy presidential post. There was a very high probability of him winning that post if he wasn't disqualified. He would have been the DPM today.

Then Najib had favoured Muhyiddin. But now?

There have been rumours that all is not well between Najib and Muhyiddin.

I wonder whether the MACC clearing Ali Rustam, thus indirectly re-qualifying him as a potential candidate for UMNO's No 2 spot, is a warning shot across the bow for Muhyiddin.

Oh, by the way, just consider those Pakatan people being cleared as 'collateral beneficiaries'.

Mind you, Najib may face a far more dangerous 'deputy' in Ali, and is thus unlikely to completely endorse him over Muhyiddin; but Ali's clearance from corrupt charges makes him a threat to the DPM.

Muhyiddin now needs Najib more than Najib needing him.

Aesop Fable No 1 - The fox & the grapes

Posted: 12 Feb 2010 02:54 AM PST

It was a very hot and sunny afternoon. A fox, which had been hunting the whole day, was very thirsty.

"How I wish there was some water," the fox thought to himself, "It's been pretty dry since I left the place with the cesspool."

Just then, he saw bunches of fat and juicy grapes hanging from a vine at a golf course. The grapes looked ripe and ready to burst with juice.

"Oh, my! Oh, my!" the fox said as his mouth began to water. "Sweet grape juice, quench my thirst! And I only need a RM2 company crate to stand on and be high enough to reach it."

The fox stood on tiptoe on his RM2 crate and stretched as high as he could, but the grapes were out of his reach because the communist had set the trellis too high.

Not about to give up, the fox walked back a short distance and took a running leap onto the RM2 crate to reach the grapes. Again, he could not reach the grapes. "That damn chauvinist."

Still not ready to give up, the fox walked back further and took another running leap at the grapes. Again, he could not reach the grapes. He cursed the man who set the CAT standard trellis so high, screaming "He's dictator, yes, a communist-minded, chauvinist dictator."

The fox jumped and leapt, again and again, but each time he could not reach the grapes. Until, at last, the fox was tired and thirstier than ever.

"What a fool I am!" said the fox furiously.
"These grapes are sour and not fit for eating. Why would I want to stay around here anyway?"

With that, the fox walked away.

Muslim-American body issues fatwa against airport body scanners

WASHINGTON: Some Muslim-American groups are supporting a fatwa issued by a body of Islamic scholars forbidding Muslims from going through full
body scanners at airports, a media report said.
The Fiqh Council of North America issued the religious ruling this week that says going through the airport scanners would violate Islamic rules on modesty, Free Press reported.
"It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women," reads the fatwa issued Tuesday. "Islam highly emphasises haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts."
After the Christmas Day bombing attempt in Detroit by a Muslim suspect from Nigeria, some US airports are now in the process of buying and using the body scanners to find explosives and other dangerous materials carried by terrorists.

But Muslim groups say the scanners, which show in graphic detail the outlines of a person's body, go against their religion. One option offered to passengers who don't want to use the scanners would be a pat down by a security guard. The Muslim groups are urging members to undergo those instead.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says it endorses the fatwa. "We support the Fiqh Council's statement on full-body scanners and believe that the religious and privacy rights of passengers can be respected while maintaining safety and security," Nihad Awad, national executive director of CAIR was quoted as saying.
Currently, there are 40 full-body scanners at 19 airports in the US, including two in Detroit, said spokesman Jim Fotenos of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There are plans for 450 more body scanners in US airports, he said.
In a statement, the TSA said it is committed to keeping passengers safe and also protecting their privacy.
"TSA's mission is to keep the travelling public safe. Advanced imaging technologies are an important tool in a multi-layered security system to detect evolving threats such as improvised explosive devices.
"TSA's use of these technologies includes strong protections in place to safeguard passenger privacy. Screening images are automatically deleted, and the officer viewing the image will never see the passenger."
The TSA stressed that the body scanners are "optional to all passengers". Those who turn them down, "will receive equivalent screening that may include a physical pat-down, hand-wanding, and other technologies".
"Physical pat-downs are performed by transportation security Officers of the same sex as the passenger in a private screening area, if the passenger requests."
Body scanners "do not produce photos", the agency said. Rather, the images "look like chalk outlines

Had Alfred Nobel's will left that much room, he should have been the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize, which then went to Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross. Alfred Nobel, businessman, arms manufacturer, and inventor of the dynamite, must have hailed and lamented, his invention. A rare ability to predict the downsides of humanity, partly from his personal tragedy of losing his brother after a blast in his nitroglycerine factory, must have compelled him to institute a 'Peace Prize' from his foundation, in a desperate attempt to curb the catastrophe he could now see, having discovered the first weapon of mass destruction.

President Obama's recent Nobel Prize ceremony was perhaps watched by more people world over than it must have been for any prize winner in recent times. This was the first time a serving American president was being awarded. The real reason, however, was that from his inauguration onwards, President Obama has not concealed the fact that in many ways he wanted to be a much different president. The Lincoln Bible, the train journey, the Lincoln lunch, the frequent references to Martin Luther King, Mandela and Mahatma, along with his habitual tweets, are some of his 'different' image attributes.

The protocol mention of the reasons why he was chosen, in a packed and attentive hall, to quite an extent overlapped with Obama's personal, but modestly put attributes. His order to release the inmates of the Guantanamo Bay, and his proclamation to strive for a nuclear-free world. The last day for putting applications for the year's Noble Peace Prize being Feb 1, and having taken office on Jan 21, it was great timing indeed. Had Bush said the same, the prize could well have been his.

Suave, emphatic and fluent as he always is, Obama kept the momentum of his speech with his trademark rhetoric. Attempting the arduous task of defending an embattled situation which was not of his making, he retained the continuity and grace of the presidential office by taking the responsibility head on, by addressing himself also as the 'Supreme Commander of the US army'. His assertion that as a Head of State, he reserved the right to unilaterally defend his nation was clear and categorical. There came the concept of a 'just' war. The rest of the speech was mostly acknowledging in various phrases, the paradox, and duality, of war as a necessity to peace. Most of the speech, we are told, was written by him.

Obama took up the argument of vociferously defending America's war stance, which may not have been his doing, but which he was now forced to pursue. He need not have overstated it. Having taken this line of argument, he lost the opportunity to highlight just the right distancing he could have shown from his predecessor, entirely for diplomatic reasons. That would have swung some civilian instincts in his favor. On a diplomatic world platform, he need not have defended or opened up to the extent he did. With his armies well entrenched, he could have gone for a different vocabulary and paradigm, because his real audience was not the one in the hall. It was the very outfits his men were confronting on the battlefield. He could have used softer dialects, to influence a section of his opponents towards moderation, even binding negotiations. There should have been something of a political usage for the Heads of States whose cooperation he is seeking. Part of a war is also won by changing opposing mindsets. Perhaps he was carrying a hangover of his previous speech at Westpoint.

Even more obvious than his discovery that one can be striving for peace while engaging in war, is the age-old corollary, that all wars, including 'just' wars keep a channel for dialogue open. The definition of a 'just' war, also includes the circumstance of a 'just' war turning 'unjust' (jus ad bellum to jus in bello). The prolonged enumeration of all the regulations of the Geneva and such Conventions being followed, may help his second campaign, but do not fetch much water to quell the fires in the enemy camps. The meaning of a Superpower is well understood by the world. It loses nothing in using negotiable language, and partly settling the heat in such a manner. The much quoted Martin Luther King actually used the same occasion to deftly reduce the threat of violence (that did not mean he ruled it out), that gave just the sort of acceptability and momentum to his campaign.

A 'just' war, primarily a Catholic definition (St Augustine, 400 AD, or Cicero much earlier), was just the term to be avoided in an engagement that is now taking religious overtones. Citing the Crusades does not take away the heat. The gates are open for the embattled adversaries to justify war based on the interpretation of another religion. Let me not mention the word. An oblique reference made to Hitler was an abysmal lack of political orientation. It can infuriate some to start acting in the same manner, and embolden others to go ahead in all fury, now that the comparison is drawn. Giving examples that have inhuman attributes neither help the war, or the peace being sought. Election campaign oratory, and statements on global platforms are two different languages. I repeat, such a rare talent in oratory could have embedded ingredients that had use in the war, if it was only known, which audience really mattered.

The circumstances and timing of this Nobel Peace Prize, no matter how well deserved and well intended, have no precedence. This could have been the reason why a brilliant president slipped on the turf of his oratory. He had taken up the challenge (which tactically he should), to neatly answer acts of his nation, though never involved in. There was no need to indulge in a prolonged and reasoned defense of war, and then to go at great lengths in justifying more combat, including a rather unusual statement regarding his soldiers, '….that some may kill, others may get killed…'. This was heartless. No soldier is ever told by his commander that 'he may get killed' (if you may recall the famous dialogue of Gen. Patten). A soldier fights for victory, or achieves martyrdom. No other state of being is acceptable.

Whereas the rest of the world may have appreciation, this was not an election campaign debate. This was an announcement during an ongoing war. Diplomatic and political overtones were lacking, as the real audience were the adversaries. To that end, there was no need for a reasoned defence, and display of intent of further damage. A statement that he would want to end the war soon, even if that meant a surge for the time being, would have gone well with the award. Military strategies aside, at the ground level, statements should be tempered. Once again, considering the real audience that certainly had every reason to feel it was being addressed, the word 'Holy War' or naming any religion could have been avoided. No one reads the context in such situations. Words are all that the opponent needs to widen his base.

Finally, wars are said to be won, when the armies return, no matter how tired, wounded, or decimated. It is this that brings the tears and smiles together. Hope that is soon, because it is human blood, and human carbon.

Coming back to a 'just' war, the 'wise one' of TOI once gave me an enlightening discourse on, the Bhagvat Gita: 'Dharma Kshetre, Kurukshetre…' , where Arjuna the greatest warrior of his time thought the war to be 'unjust', but Krishna during the rest of the Gita defines 'just' for him. That definition also became Arjuna's motivation to fight and fight for victory.
